Guidelines announced for religious services in phase 3

Details of how religious services can be conducted safely as the maximum size of congregants is increased to 250 in phase three, which starts tomorrow, were announced by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth yesterday. At present, religious organisations can hold congregational and other worship services for up to 100 people. From tomorrow, live performance elements for congregational and other worship services, as well as religious rites, will be permitted. TraceTogether-only SafeEntry will be made mandatory for places of worship and other public premises by early next year, after everyone has had the chance to collect the TraceTogether token. Religious organisations must prepare to accept check-ins by the TraceTogether app or token, said MCCY. For congregational services, worshippers have to be segregated into zones each holding a maximum of 50 people. Zones must be completely separated from one another through either a wall-to-wall partition that is at least 1.8m high, or a space of at least 3m that is demarcated by continuous physical barriers such as ropes. Entrance and exit timings must also be staggered so that worshippers from different zones do not mix with one anot...

How Tesla is jolting the US stock market

(NYTIMES) - Forget bitcoin. If you are looking for a more tangible investment on technology, how about electric cars? The stock market has never seen anything quite like Tesla. Led by the mercurial billionaire Elon Musk, the electric-car maker's shares have soared roughly 14,000 per cent since it went public a decade ago. Even amid an economy-roiling coronavirus pandemic it's up roughly 700 per cent this year. And now, a company that has provoked years of equally intense fandom and criticism among money managers and tech bros the world over has just been added to the S&P 500 - traditionally a marker of corporate maturity. The company is the largest ever added to the index, and, with a market capitalisation of US$650 billion (S$864 billion), the sudden weight it will throw into the US stock market could have strange consequences. Companies worth a fraction of Tesla would have been included in the index long ago, but the approach that has made it such a valuable company has brought challenges. Despite all its technological innovations, Mr Musk's celebrity aura and a high-risk, high-reward approach to business, Tesla for the longest time was unable to meet the most humdrum requirement...

PR who stayed at Mandarin Orchard among new Covid-19 cases in S’pore

SINGAPORE - A Singapore permanent resident was found to be infected with the coronavirus after completing his stay-home notice, which he served partly in Mandarin Orchard Singapore hotel. The Ministry of Health (MOH) said late Friday night (Dec 25) that it is investigating if he is linked to 13 patients who had earlier served their stay-home notices at the same hotel and are suspected to be linked to one another. This Singapore PR, a 47-year-old man, was one of the 14 new Covid-19 cases announced by MOH on Friday, all of which were imported. MOH said the patient initially served his stay-home notice at the Mandarin Orchard hotel after returning from the Philippines on Dec 10. But the PR was later moved to another dedicated facility on Dec 20, as the ministry started investigations into 13 Covid-19 cases who had served their stay-home notices at the hotel. The 13 cases, which came from 10 different countries, were infected by coronavirus strains with "high genetic similarity", which implied that the infections might have come from one source and could have happened in the hotel. MOH said on Friday that the PR had tested negative for the coronavirus during swab tests on Dec 19 and De...

The Singaporean couple, who were married in 2015, found out three years later that Jerome, 33, is a carrier of balanced translocation, a condition which results in an unusual rearrangement of chromosomes. Pharma industry drives rebound in factory output

As a year weighed down by the coronavirus pandemic drew to a close, Singapore's manufacturing industry rebounded last month, partly because the pharmaceutical segment grasped the opportunities created by the outbreak. Semiconductors also turned in a strong performance. Despite the Republic weathering its worst recession since independence, manufacturing has been a rare picture of resilience this year, and is riding the demand arising from the pandemic and 5G markets. Factory output beat analysts' expectations and expanded 17.9 per cent year on year, reversing the 0.8 per cent decline seen the previous month, according to data released by the Economic Development Board yesterday. Economists polled by Bloomberg had forecast a 14.1 per cent jump. Analysts said the sector is likely to end the year on a positive note, with over 6 per cent growth. Maybank Kim Eng senior economist Chua Hak Bin said the manufacturing sector has been "remarkably resilient" this year, unlike previous recessions, where it had been a major casualty. It is likely to continue the third quarter's 10 per cent growth into the fourth quarter, he added. The volatile biomedical cluster, which has been one of the best-...

ST Singaporean of the Year 2020: 81-year-old helps neighbour to put out fire in flat

SINGAPORE - Retiree Lim Ee Chin had just watched the National Day parade on television when she spotted that her neighbour's flat was on fire at about 11.20pm and instinctively knew she had to do something to help. Madam Lim, 81, braved billowing smoke to fill buckets of water in her bathroom and drag them across the living room floor to her front gate so her neighbour could douse the flames raging in the Block 917 Jurong West Street 91 flat. Her willingness to help a neighbour in serious trouble came despite having a curved spine and heart trouble and the pleas from her sister whom she lives with to leave for her safety. "Of course I had to help. When I saw their house burning, it hurt my heart," said Madam Lim, who used to work at a tin factory. "They didn't set the fire on purpose. What if they have no house to live in?" She added that she could not recall how many pails of water she fetched that night on Aug 9, but "it felt like an hour that would never end". With the help of other neighbours, most of the fire was put out before the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived. After they left, Madam Lim spent the next few hours mopping up her flat. Her selfless efforts made he...

New strains: More people may need to be vaccinated

With the discovery of new, more contagious strains of the Covid-19 virus in Britain and South Africa, it may now be important for more Singaporeans to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, said a health expert here. Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore, said yesterday: "This is the only way we can continue to ensure that the community as a whole is protected." This means that instead of aiming to get 80 per cent of the population here vaccinated against Covid-19, "we may now be looking at 90 per cent, or even higher", Prof Teo said in a video interview with The Straits Times on its daily online talk show, The Big Story. The Health Ministry's chief health scientist, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, previously told The Straits Times that at least 80 per cent of the population would have to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity against Covid-19. A new B117 strain of Covid-19 circulating in Britain has been reported to be more contagious, but has not shown signs of being more lethal or severe. Singapore recorded its first case of this strain on Wednesday - a 17-year-old Singaporean girl who had returned from Brit...

Cryptocurrency XRP dives as Ripple faces SEC charges

NEW YORK • Cryptocurrency XRP crashed on Wednesday after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged associated blockchain firm Ripple with conducting a US$1.3 billion (S$1.7 billion) unregistered securities offering. XRP, the third-biggest cryptocurrency by market value, plunged almost 40 per cent to about 26 US cents, bringing its total weekly losses to more than 50 per cent and wiping out around US$10 billion in market value. The SEC maintains that Ripple's chairman, co-founder and former chief executive officer Christian Larsen and current CEO Brad Garlinghouse "failed to register their offers and sales of XRP or satisfy any exemption from registration". The two also orchestrated personal unregistered sales worth US$600 million, the SEC alleged. Ripple has rejected the charges, saying XRP is a currency and does not need to be registered as an investment contract. Mr Garlinghouse called the case "an assault on crypto at large" in a message to staff that was posted on the company's blog. The SEC did not want to foster innovation in the digital asset space, he said. Financial regulators around the globe are still grappling with how to regulate bitcoin, XRP and rival cr...
