SINGAPORE - A maid accused of recording multiple videos of herself bathing an elderly man under her care - without his knowledge - was charged in a district court on Thursday (Oct 14). The 33-year-old Indonesian is accused of seven counts of recording such clips involving a vulnerable person, and six of distributing them. She allegedly committed the offences in a Punggol flat and cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the man's identity. She is said to have used her mobile phone to do a recording while she bathed him on seven occasions between January 2020 and this year. The woman is also accused of sharing the clips with another party via messaging platform WhatsApp at least four times with the intent to cause humiliation to the man. She is said to have shared these clips without his consent. Details about the recipients as well as the man's age and physical condition were not disclosed in court documents. On Jan 1 this year, the maid allegedly uploaded one of the clips onto social media platform TikTok without his consent as well. The police said in an earlier statement that officers received a report two days later about a woman who had allegedly recorded videos of hersel...

Scammers posing as tech support try to cheat 2 people of their life savings, police issue alert

SINGAPORE - Scammers impersonating tech support staff from local telecommunication companies or government agencies are on the prowl and the police have issued an alert to the public on Thursday (Oct 14). In September, two people almost lost their life savings to the criminals, who gained access to their computers and tried to transfer more than $300,000 from each victim's bank account. Fortunately for these two people, vigilant bank officers and a fraud surveillance system from OCBC, the bank involved, detected the suspicious transfer requests and contacted the victims. The bank then stopped the transactions when it found out they were not authorised. The scammers operate by calling their victims and claiming to be from either a government agency or a telecommunication company. These "tech support staff" would tell the victims that their Wi-Fi routers are being used for illegal purposes. They may also tell the victims that their mobile devices have been infected with viruses. The scammers would then instruct the victims to install remote access software, such as TeamViewer or Anydesk, to grant them access to the devices. Once the scammers gain access to the computers, they would r...

Two security agencies charged for making officers work more than 12 hours daily

SINGAPORE - In a move to guard against unacceptable work practices, two private security agencies have been hauled up over staff working between 17 and 20 hours a day. Erawan Security Services and Volantra Security were each charged on Thursday (Oct 14) under the Employment Act with making their officers work more than 12 hours a day on multiple days between February and March. Erawan faces two charges and Volantra faces three. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) inspected about 200 private security agencies from April to August, checking for compliance with working hours and overtime limits. It found that about a third of the agencies had breaches. While most of these were minor, the ministry said it would be taking action against 15 of them for exceeding the working hour limits. In a release on Thursday, MOM said its investigations found that the security officers from Erawan and Volantra were made to work back-to-back shifts. It added that stakeholders have been working to improve the wages and well-being of some 50,000 security officers since the formation of the Security Tripartite Cluster in 2013. The cluster consists of representatives from the unions, employers, services buyers ...

SINGAPORE - Sixteen men and three women, all aged between 18 and 35, have been arrested for suspected involvement in Ponzi-like job scams with fake companies. The victims were told that in order to earn a commission, they had to sign up for free membership accounts on certain websites and mobile applications. After signing up, they would then be offered different membership packages, ranging in price from $10 to a few thousand dollars, with varying amounts of commission paid per task. They would be told to pay the fees via cryptocurrency or bank transfer to unknown individuals before they could start performing the job to earn a commission. In most cases, the victims would be convinced that it was a legitimate job, as t...

Time to Act: Promoting Women and Youth Leadership for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth

by Erick Thohir and Sharon Florencia JAKARTA, Oct 13, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – COVID-19 has had a significant impact on people’s lives, how businesses and economies operate, and the global sustainability agenda. Nevertheless, the current conditions will provide an unprecedented opportunity to build a better world by implementing more sustainable policies and actions. In addressing these, the G20 heads of state and government will convene at the Rome Summit this month to discuss various development agendas, from health and education to the economy, emphasizing trade, investments, and the digital economy. The Rome Summit is not the only significant event happening in the world in October. In the same month, International Day of the Girl (IDG) is being celebrated annually on 11 October, and this event, which intends to campaign on gender equalities, has become an important moment for us. It is a reminder for gender equality, to amplify girls’ voices meaningfully, and to support their presence and leadership. S’pore’s economic growth moderates to 6.5% year-on-year in Q3: Flash data

SINGAPORE - Singapore's economy expanded at a slower annual pace in the third quarter compared to the previous three-month period when growth was boosted by a low-base effect. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose 6.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the July-September period, moderating from 15.2 per cent growth in the previous quarter, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) on Thursday (Oct 14). However, on a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy expanded by 0.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2021, a reversal from the 1.4 per cent contraction in the preceding quarter. MTI said that the strong annual growth recorded in the second quarter of 2021 was largely due to the low base in the corresponding quarter of 2020 when GDP fell by 13.3 per cent due to the Circuit Breaker (CB) measures implemented from April 7 to June 1 2020, as well as the sharp fall in external demand amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. A higher than expected year-on-year growth in the April-June period, plans for a gradual reopening of borders and easing of Covid-19 curbs have raised hopes of a faster economic recovery for Singapore this year. But analysts have also warned that the path to t...

Australia risks offshore investment drought from not doing more on climate change:RBA

SYDNEY (REUTERS) - Australia could face rising costs of capital and divestment by offshore funds if it is not seen to be doing more to address climate change, a top central banker said on Thursday (Oct 14). Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) deputy governor Guy Debelle said foreign investors were increasingly bringing up the issue of climate change with the RBA, Australian corporates and government debt managers. This had potential implications for the cost of and ease of access to capital for Australian corporates and the government, he said in an online speech. "To date, we have only isolated examples of divestment from Australia because of climate risk, but the likelihood of more significant divestment is increasing," Mr Debelle said. The warning comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison's conservative government is debating whether to commit to a net zero emissions target by 2050. Mr Morrison is facing internal opposition from the junior partner in his coalition government about strengthening climate targets ahead of the COP 26 summit in Glasgow later in November. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg last month warned Australia had to match developed nations and commit to cutting emissions to n...

As Evergrande default looms, what legal options do offshore creditors have?

LONDON/HONG KONG (REUTERS) - With China Evergrande Group's default deadline drawing closer, offshore bond investors in the property developer are pondering their legal options to safeguard their investments. Below are some factors at play as offshore investors, with some US$20 billion (S$27 billion) of Evergrande debt outstanding, gear up to deal with the potential fallout from what could become China's biggest ever corporate default: Do Evergrande's offshore bonds carry any guarantee from issuer? Chinese legal rules prevent mainland-incorporated parent companies from guaranteeing their subsidiaries' offshore debt without going through a registration and approval process. To work around this, offshore corporate bonds, in many cases, are issued by Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and feature a so-called keepwell structure. The way many market participants worked around the lack of a guarantee was by using keepwell deeds - an undertaking to bondholders, and the offshore SPV which issues the debt, that the parent will make sure the SPV maintains a positive net worth and remains solvent. The keepwell structure emerged in 2012-2013, according to Fitch, which cited data estimating that in...

Keppel’s settlement deal over frozen multi-billion-dollar Brazil rig jobs takes effect

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Keppel Corp's settlement agreement with troubled Brazilian company Sete Brasil, inked two years ago and relating to multi-billion-dollar frozen rig jobs, is now effective. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for four oil drilling rigs will be deemed to be amicably terminated, with no penalties or refunds due to any party, Keppel said in a bourse filing on Wednesday (Oct 13) evening. Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) subsidiary Fernvale will also have full title and ownership to those four rigs. Meanwhile, a sum of about US$259.5 million (S$350.7 million) under the outstanding invoices from Fernvale, issued under the EPC contracts with Sete Brasil units Urca and Frade, will be recognised as an undisputed debt due and owing by the two units. The sum will also be recognised as part of the debt under the judicial reorganisation plan. Certain conditions precedent will be de-coupled from the settlement agreement, to allow for the settlement to take effect immediately, Keppel said. These conditions precedent are Sete Brasil's disposal of its entire shareholding in Urca and Frade, as well as the release of certain securities th...

GIC-backed clinical trial firm WCG withdraws US IPO plans

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - WCG Clinical, a clinical trial solutions company backed by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, on Wednesday (Oct 13) filed to withdraw its initial public offering (IPO), joining a list of companies that pulled the plug on their offerings in recent weeks. The company did not give a reason for the withdrawal in its paperwork with the US securities regulator, but adverse market conditions have forced exercise equipment maker iFIT Health & Fitness, AEON Biopharma and others to abandon their IPO plans recently. Inflation concerns and worries surrounding cash-strapped property developer China Evergrande Group have spooked investors and fueled wild gyrations in global equities in recent weeks. On Wednesday, data from the Labor Department showed US consumer prices increased solidly in September and are set to rise further in the coming months. However, despite some hiccups, the market for IPOs remains robust, with a slew of high profile companies like Amazon.com-backed electric vehicle maker Rivian and chipmaker GlobalFoundries lined up for stock market listings by the end of the year. In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in July, WCG Clinical...
