When The Straits Times visited several places, there were checks conducted at some but not others. At Hougang 203 Coffee Shop, stallholders were actively asking patrons to show their vaccination status. Patrons like Mr K. Tang, who works in the logistics sector, was annoyed by the constant checks as he moved from stall to stall. "I've been asked three times in 10 minutes for my vaccination status at this coffee shop. Why can't they just check once? I will have to show it for a fourth time later when I buy food for my wife. It's so frustrating," he said. SINGAPORE - A youth who was caught on video last December doing a backflip inside a white rhinoceros enclosure at the Singapore Zoo allegedly consumed cannabis while he was out on bail. Ralph Wee Yi Kai, 19, was charged with one count of drug consumption in a district court on Wednesday (Oct 13). He was first hauled to court in July this year, when he was charged with two counts of mischief as well as one count each of vandalism and criminal trespass. Wee was offered bail of $15,000. The Singaporean was said to have taken the drug in August while out on bail. On Wednesday, Wee appeared in court via video link. He had his bail revoked earlier after he breached its conditions and was remanded. While out on bail, he was supposed to undergo urine tests at the Central Narcotics Bureau but failed to do so. Defence lawyer Shashi Nathan told the court on Wednesday that his client had been issued medical certificates for days he was supposed to go for the tests. WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - Three United States Federal Reserve policymakers on Tuesday (Oct 12) said the economy has healed enough for the central bank to begin to withdraw its crisis-era support, cementing expectations the Fed will start to taper its monthly bond purchases as soon as next month. "I myself believe that the 'substantial further progress' standard has more than been met with regard to our price-stability mandate and has all but been met with regard to our employment mandate," Fed vice-chair Richard Clarida told the Institute of International Finance virtual annual meeting. He was referring to the Fed's promise to keep buying US$120 billion (S$162.8 billion) of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities each month until the economy had met that standard on both its mandates. Fed policymakers at their last meeting agreed that tapering "may soon be warranted" and would likely conclude in the middle of next year, he said.
