Building manager of posh Scotts Road condo used access card to steal $100k in cash and items from residents

SINGAPORE - Using an access card he created for units at the Scotts Square condominium, a building manager entered residents' homes and stole $28,000 in cash and three Hermes handbags worth nearly $86,000 in total. Teh Jiahe, now 37, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (Oct 12) to three counts of theft committed in three homes. Two other counts of theft linked to two apartments will be considered during sentencing. The Singaporean stole a pair of shoes worth $2,000 and two books from these two units. The offences were committed last year. The 43-storey development in Scotts Road has 338 units. The smaller one-bedroom units are being offered for sale on the resale market in excess of $2 million, while the three-bedroom units are on the market for nearly $5 million. Deputy Public Prosecutor Jaime Pang said that Teh's job scope included managing the property's facilities and dealing with residents' complaints. The Singaporean also had use of a computer system that coded access cards which allowed entry into residents' homes. The court heard that Teh had to create such an access card three years before the offences because he forgot to bring the one issued to him for work. Court documents do not...

Subsea cable planned to import green power from Indonesia to S’pore, SP partners France’s EDF

SINGAPORE - A subsea cable will be developed to import renewable energy from Indonesia to Singapore. Power grid operator SP Group has partnered with French energy company EDF Group to develop the infrastructure which will include a proposed 1,000 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic plant, the companies said in a joint statement on Tuesday (Oct 12). The two power companies will be conducting commercial, regulatory and technical feasibility studies for the subsea cable under a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday. They will also be exploring opportunities to widen the interconnection to other clean energy sources in Indonesia. Singapore has been looking to meet more of its power needs with renewable energy by scaling up solar power generation across the island and importing it, including from Malaysia. Currently, Singapore relies overwhelmingly on gas for power generation. Plans are also under way to import energy from Australia through a 740km subsea cable. There are also plans to begin trialling the import of hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia. The latest subsea cable project is being led by EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of EDF. "When completed, the subsea tra...

Two-thirds of BTO projects completed during Covid-19 outbreak delayed by 6 months or less: HDB

SINGAPORE - Buyers of flats in 17 Build-To-Order (BTO) projects completed and delivered during the Covid-19 pandemic faced additional waiting time of six months or less, said the Housing Board on Tuesday (Oct 12). The 17 projects make up about two-thirds of the 25 BTO projects delivered since January last year. The remaining eight BTO projects were delayed by between seven and 10 months, said HDB. In total, more than 16,000 new homes have been delivered to Singaporeans since January 2020. Including pandemic-induced delays, the waiting time for the projects ranged from 2.4 years to 5.3 years, with an average waiting time of 4.1 years, said HDB. Last Saturday, HDB said it is on track to complete another five more BTO projects by the end of this year, barring unforeseen circumstances. This comes as National Development Minister Desmond Lee said in Parliament earlier this month that the average waiting time for ongoing BTO flats is between four and five years, even after taking into account delays brought about by the pandemic. He was clarifying the misconception that waiting times for BTO flats have risen to six to seven years, given the impact that Covid-19 has had on the constructio...

The food delivery company announced the pilot of this initiative, known as the Power-Assisted Bicycle Upgrading Subsidy Scheme, on Tuesday (Oct 12). Deliveroo will pay for up to 50 per cent, with a $500 cap, of selected Land Transport Authority-compliant PAB models from two suppliers, Mobot and Falcon PEV. Mr Ong Zhi Hao, 29, a Deliveroo rider who will be taking part in the subsidy scheme, said he did not have the financial means to purchase an electric bicycle. "Now, with my savings coupled with Deliveroo's help, I am glad to be able to upgrade to a PAB to deliver more orders to customers and boost my income in a safe manner," he said. The $100,000 initiative is funded by Deliveroo Singapore's global community fund. The shortlisted riders will be ab...

Singapore said to canvass wealth circles on tax ideas

SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - Singapore's government has been soliciting feedback on its tax regime, including having conversations around wealth taxes, as discourse grows around this potentially sensitive topic. While the government regularly consults various industry groups on fiscal policies, the talks around such taxes appear to have picked up pace following comments by Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) chief Ravi Menon in July that expanding levies on the rich may be needed to address wealth disparity. Officials from the administration have met with members of Singapore's business elite and advisers to the rich to gauge their reactions and understand concerns, according to people familiar with the discussions, who asked not to be identified because of the delicate nature of the topic. The discussions took place through official feedback sessions as well as unofficial meetings over meals, they said. Singapore's low taxes and stability have long attracted the world's wealthiest, from Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin to James Dyson, the billionaire founder of the eponymous vacuum cleaning giant, making the city-state a hub for private banking, family offices and asset management...

Bitcoin pierces US$57,000 as traders resume push for record highs

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Bitcoin climbed above US$57,000 for the first time since May as speculators bet that the largest cryptocurrency will retest the record highs reached earlier this year. The digital currency rose as much as 4.3 per cent to US$57,829 on Monday (Oct 11) in New York before paring gains. It reached almost US$65,000 in April, and has roughly doubled this year. The Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index increased as much as 2.4 per cent on Monday. As in past rallies, a myriad of reasons are being cited for the latest surge, from an easing of concern about regulatory efforts in the United States and China, as well as renewed optimism about a possible US Securities and Exchange Commission approval of a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Investors are particularly excited that a Bitcoin futures ETF may be soon green-lighted by the US regulator, as SEC chair Gary Gensler has signaled openness to a fund focused exclusively on the derivatives-based product. "A lot of investors and advisors have had crypto on their to-do list, and are finally making the move with allocations that start with Bitcoin," or crypto funds like the Bitwise 10 that invest heavily in Bitcoin, said Hunter Horsley,...

China faces power hikes that are likely to cut metals output

BEIJING (BLOOMBERG) - China's energy crisis is likely to mean higher electricity prices, forcing the nation's army of metals smelters to reduce output and threatening the industrial activity that has underpinned the nation's recovery from the pandemic. In a bid to boost power generation, the government will allow electricity prices to rise by as much as 20 per cent, double the current limit, according to a statement on Friday (Oct 8) from China's cabinet. Power costs for the most-energy intensive industries, which would include metals producers, won't be subject to a cap. China is the biggest producer and consumer of most metals. Cutting the reins on power prices is a dramatic intervention in a market that China had sought to keep stable in order to ensure predictable costs for industrial users. It's another headwind to growth, adding to the inflationary pressures from soaring commodities markets just as the economy is slowing. The move comes as the supply of coal, China's mainstay fuel, tightens and prices surge to record levels, leaving power firms with the choice of curtailing output or selling at a loss. Chinese firms have already cut output of some metals this year as pressure...

Chubb to buy some Cigna Asia Pacific units for $7.8 billion

HONG KONG (BLOOMBERG) - Chubb will buy Cigna Corp's life, accident and supplemental businesses in seven places for US$5.75 billion (S$7.8 billion) in a deal aimed at boosting its operations in the Asia Pacific region. The transaction, which involves Cigna's businesses in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand as well as its interest in a joint venture in Turkey, comes months after Chubb was repeatedly rebuffed in its bid to take over Hartford Financial Services Group for about US$25 billion. The addition of Cigna's business will "rebalance our global portfolio toward this important region," said Evan G. Greenberg, Chubb's chairman and chief executive officer in a statement late on Thursday (Oct 7). For Cigna, the move is in line with efforts to get out of other businesses to focus on healthcare. The company expects to realise approximately US$5.4 billion of net after-tax proceeds from the transaction and plans to utilise the proceeds primarily for share repurchase, it said, with impact likely to be "neutral to slightly dilutive" to earnings per share in 2022. In 2019, Cigna agreed to sell its life and disability insurance business in the US to New York Life I...

Plunging currency, dollar drought worsen Myanmar economic crisis

YANGON (BLOOMBERG) - Myanmar is battling a plunging local currency amid an unprecedented United States dollar shortage, driving up the cost of imports and worsening the economy's struggle with dual challenges of the pandemic and post-coup financial isolation. The kyat has tumbled about 50 per cent since the military seized power in February which triggered a freeze on parts of Myanmar's foreign reserves held in the US and suspension of multilateral aids - both key sources of foreign currency supplies. Restrictions on cash withdrawals have fuelled worries about the safety of money in banks, prompting people to seek more widely used currencies such as the US or Singapore dollars or Thai baht, analysts said. The Central Bank of Myanmar's efforts to quell the rush for dollars, including stepping up foreign currency supplies and ordering exporters to repatriate earnings within 30 days, have failed to stem the kyat's slide. The currency may plunge further to 2,400 to a US dollar by the end of this year and 3,200 by the end of next year, according to Mr Jason Yek, senior Asia country risk analyst at Fitch Solutions. The currency sell-off is the latest crisis to hit the country that is sti...
