Fire extinguisher company in S’pore ordered to stop unfair trade practices

SINGAPORE - A company that sells fire extinguishers has been ordered to stop its unfair trade practices by the State Courts, after investigations by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS). Fire Safety & Prevention (SG) had made false and misleading claims while carrying out unsolicited door-to-door visits to sell fire extinguishers, said CCCS in a media release. This included quoting buyers an initial price of $17.90 for a fire extinguisher and then charging them $179 for the same product. The company had also led consumers to believe that it was affiliated with or approved by the Government, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) or various community centres. To sell the extinguishers, it told consumers that there was a new law requiring each household to own a fire extinguisher by a certain date. It also told buyers that Passion or NTUC card holders, Pioneer Generation members or Singaporeans could get a discount on the fire extinguishers, when there was no such discount. Furthermore, it said its fire extinguishers were non-refundable even though under consumer laws, buyers have the right to cancel a purchase and get a refund. The company also told customer...

Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney to hire 250 people in S’pore over a year after Covid-19 layoffs

SINGAPORE - Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney will hire 250 new staff by the end of the year, in a move that shows the aviation and aerospace sector is slowly getting back on its feet. The United States-based firm had retrenched 400 staff at five of its six facilities here in August last year due to the impact the Covid-19 pandemic had on the industry. It had employed about 2,000 workers in Singapore. Mr Tim Cormier, Pratt & Whitney's vice-president of aftermarket operations in Asia-Pacific, told The Straits Times on Friday (Oct 8) that the firm had started hiring workers in the last few months. Most of the new hires will be hourly workforce technicians and production associates, said Mr Cormier, but they will be complemented by salaried workforce made up of degree and diploma holders as well. Asked whether the new staff are filling up the roles left by those who were retrenched or if they are taking on new roles, Mr Cormier said they are doing both. "There is some volume-related hiring we need to do, which would lend itself to bringing back some of the employees, or at the very least, some of the same skill sets that we have. "But our eyes are trained on the future... t...

Yellen confident Congress will follow through on global tax deal

WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG) - Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she expects Congress to take action soon to bring the United States into line with a global minimum tax agreed on last week by 136 countries. "I am confident that what we need to do to come into compliance with the minimum tax will be included in a reconciliation package," Dr Yellen said Sunday (Oct 10) on ABC's This Week, referring to a spending Bill Democrats are preparing. An overhaul of how to tax multinational companies took a big step forward Friday in talks hosted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Countries agreed to enforce a minimum corporate tax rate of 15 per cent. Dr Yellen also expressed confidence that Democrats would come to an agreement over the content and size of a long-term spending package. Party moderates have rejected the US$3.5 trillion (S$4.7 trillion) headline number US President Joe Biden had proposed. Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, said on Fox News Sunday he expects the number to be whittled down to about US$2 trillion. "This is a healthy give-and-take going on right now among Democrats with different points of view," Dr Yellen said. "We do have a limit on...

In a world fighting climate change, fossil fuels take revenge

LONDON (BLOOMBERG) - With its chimneys towering 200m above the industrial heartland of England, West Burton A power station is a relic of the fossil fuel age. When fired up, its boilers burn thousands of tonnes of coal each day, spewing out the carbon dioxide that is warming up the planet. After more than 50 years of operation, it will close next year, part of a global transition into green energy sources like wind and solar. It is only rarely used, but for several days last month, it was this old, polluting facility that kept the lights on in Britain. West Burton is not an oddity. Across the world, fossil fuels are making a remarkable comeback as a super-charged recovery from the pandemic boosts demand. For all the green energy promises and plans, that transition is in its infancy, and the world still leans heavily on fossils. It is an addiction built up over two and a half centuries, and it runs deep. In Europe, where electric vehicles are becoming ever more popular, gasoline sales are booming, reaching a 10-year high in some countries. In the developing world, from Brazil to China, natural gas consumption is stronger than ever. The global hunger for energy has collided with cons...

Sept equity pullback an opportunity for investors

SINGAPORE - Today, the spectre of stagflation haunts many economies as they try to break free of Covid-19 and regain some semblance of normality. Inflation is already making a comeback after a two year break. Unemployment - or rather under-employment - remains an issue many governments are grappling with. This is the scenario against which stock markets are struggling to make headway as we enter the final quarter of 2021. That said, markets ended the week on a stronger note as the US Senate took steps to pass a short term US$480 billion (S$650 billion) increase in Treasury borrowings to avert a debt default later this month. Sentiment was also helped by the better than expected US jobless claims data, with initial claims at 326,000 compared to consensus estimate of 348,000. That said, September added 194,000 jobs versus a forecasted 500,000, suggesting that hirings have slowed significantly in the world's largest economy. Still, the unemployment rate fell to 4.8 per cent versus an expected 5.1 per cent. However under-employment has become persistent, especially amongst workers in the over-55 years category. US data suggest many older workers are also dropping out of the regular wor...
