The power supply crunch, brought about by environmental controls, supply constraints and soaring prices, has forced industries throughout the country to cut production, and left several provinces scrambling to guarantee electricity and heating for residents. Goldman Sachs estimated that as much as 44 per cent of China's industrial activity has been affected, leading to a 1-percentage point decline in annualised GDP growth in the third quarter, and a 2-percentage point cut from October to December, it said. KUALA LUMPUR (REUTERS) - Malaysia's AirAsia X on Monday (Sept 27) posted a record quarterly loss of RM24.6 billion (S$7.95 billion), eight times more than a year ago, as a multi-billion-dollar provision to cover debts drove operating costs higher. It was the ninth loss in succession for the airline, an affiliate of AirAsia Group. The net loss for the April-June period widened from a RM305.2 million loss a year ago. The airline said it made an accounting provision of RM23.8 billion to its creditors during the quarter as it is in default under the contract terms. Revenue dropped 20.9 per cent to RM72.3 million, versus RM91.4 million. In a stock exchange filing, it said the impact of the provision should be temporary. Wage support for aviation sector to be extended to March 2022

SINGAPORE - Employers in the aviation sector will get six more months of wage support for their workers to help them tide over the continuing Covid-19 pandemic. The Aviation Workforce Retention Grant amounts to about $130 million and is expected to benefit more than 100 companies, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said on Monday (Sept 27). Eligible aviation companies will receive 30 per cent support for the first $4,600 of gross monthly wages paid to each Singaporean or permanent resident employee from October to December this year. From January to March next year, they will receive 10 per cent support of the same amount. CAAS said that as at September 2021, total passenger traffic at Changi Airport is 3.6 per cent of pre-Covid-19 levels. Consequently, aviation companies have reduced manpower in response to decreased air travel. "After 20 months, the aviation sector remains among the hardest-hit of all economic sectors," said CAAS. SINGAPORE - Two people were jailed in separate cases on Monday (Sept 27) for redeeming face masks using illegally retained IC numbers. Ang Poh Lay, 47, who was a clinic assistant at Tan & Yik Clinic & Surgery, was sentenced to nine weeks' jail. She pleaded guilty to one charge each of cheating and using illegally obtained personal information. Between March 1 and 7, she illegally retained the personal details of eight patients from the clinic's records and used them to redeem the masks. She chose to use information belonging to patients she assumed were elderly or who had already died or foreign domestic workers who had already left the country. The court was told she selected patient information belonging to those she thought were already dead as she had previously successfully used her late mother's IC number to redeem masks. Ang later admitted she used the records of a total of 26 patients to redeem mask packs. Her home was searched and 20 mask packs were found. She claimed she had already used six of the packs.
