High Court awards PM Lee $370,000 in damages in defamation suits against TOC editor Terry Xu and article author

SINGAPORE - The High Court has awarded Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong a total of $370,000 in damages for two defamation suits he filed over an article published on The Online Citizen (TOC) website. He had separately sued TOC chief editor Terry Xu and Ms Rubaashini Shunmuganathan, the Malaysian author of the article that was published on Aug 15, 2019. The article, titled "PM Lee's wife Ho Ching weirdly shares article on cutting ties with family members", had quoted a Facebook post by PM Lee's sister, Dr Lee Wei Ling, saying their father, founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, had been misled by PM Lee into believing the family house at 38 Oxley Road had been gazetted by the Government. Ms Rubaashini did not enter an appearance to defend the suit against her and judgment in default was granted in favour of PM Lee. In a 64-page judgment released on Wednesday (Sept 1), Justice Audrey Lim said she was unable to accept Mr Xu's inference that PM Lee had, with an ulterior motive, misled Mr Lee Kuan Yew into believing that the house had been gazetted. "On the contrary, the evidence shows that (PM Lee) had supported (Mr Lee Kuan Yew's) wishes to demolish the house as he wanted to respect his ...

Briton allegedly linked to Wirecard case charged in Singapore with abetting to falsify document

SINGAPORE - A man allegedly linked to a case involving German payments company Wirecard has been charged with one count of abetting to falsify a document. James Henry O'Sullivan, 46, appeared in a Singapore district court via video-link on Wednesday (Sept 1). In March 2017, the Briton allegedly instigated then director of local accounting firm Citadelle Corporate Services R Shanmugaratnam to falsify a document. According to court documents, O'Sullivan, who was arrested on Monday, purportedly instructed the Singaporean to issue a letter from Citadelle to a Wirecard subsidiary known as Cardsystems Middle East FZ. The letter is said to have stated that Citadelle held a balance of about 86.4 million euros (S$137 million) in an escrow account as of Dec 30, 2016 - when, in fact, Citadelle did not maintain such an account. Escrow is an essential service in capital markets that supports transactions such as mergers and acquisitions. O'Sullivan's lawyer Tito Isaac on Wednesday asked for his client to be allowed bail, stressing that the Briton had assisted the authorities with investigations. Mr Isaac said O'Sullivan's ties to Singapore are strong, adding that he and his wife are working her...

Researchers identify possible predictor of early heart disease in the elderly: NHCS

SINGAPORE - Researchers here have found a potential predictor of heart disease among the elderly, after discovering a link between the weakening of skeletal muscle function and heart size. The skeletal muscle is attached to bones around the body and helps with muscle movement. The age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function is known as sarcopenia, and it affects 10 per cent of older healthy adults. While such skeletal muscle degeneration is known, the impact of sarcopenia on the ageing heart had not been identified. This was what the study led by the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) sought to address. The longitudinal study, known as the Cardiac Ageing Study, began in 2014 and involved more than 300 healthy adults between 40 and 80 years old. It aimed to study the characteristics of how the heart ages - in both structure and function - within the local population. Based on detailed scans and various assessments such as skeletal muscle mass measurements and hand grip strength tests, the researchers found significant associations between skeletal muscle mass, function and heart structure. Over 20 per cent of older adults with sarcopenia had a distinct pattern of struc...

She expects crowds to also return with the start of the September school holidays next week. She said the store had received reservations for the weekend. When The Straits Times visited Terminal 3's basement two on Wednesday morning, a few stores were still closed and most of the people around were airport workers. A clothing shop employee, who wanted to be known only as Ms Yang, said the airport was quieter than usual on a weekday morning, but she hoped it w...

1 in 4 US managers have fired staff for Zoom-call blunders: Survey

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Zoom-call blunders can be hazardous to your career. Nearly 1 in 4 executives have fired a staffer for slipping up during a video or audio conference, and most have levied some sort of disciplinary action for gaffes made in virtual meetings, a survey of 200 managers at large companies found. The survey, commissioned by Vyopta, which helps companies manage their workplace collaboration and communication systems, also found that executives don't fully trust a third of their staff to perform effectively when working remotely. The pessimistic findings illustrate how workers are still getting accustomed to working remotely, which has become commonplace during the Covid-19 pandemic. Daily participants in Zoom calls surged from 10 million a day at the end of 2019 to 300 million in April 2020, the conferencing company has said, and in recent weeks many companies have pushed back their plans to return to offices due to the delta variant's spread. Some Zoom miscues, like New Yorker magazine writer Jeffrey Toobin getting fired for inadvertently exposing himself, have been well-publicised. Virtual-meeting miscues include joining a call late, having a bad Internet connecti...

Malaysia’s Carsome eyes US IPO as it hits $1.75 billion valuation

SINGAPORE (REUTERS) - South-east Asian used-car marketplace Carsome Group said it has raised US$170 million (S$228.6 million) in a funding round from investors including Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, cementing its position as Malaysia's largest tech unicorn, valued at US$1.3 billion (S$1.75 billion). The valuation comes as South-east Asian start-ups are attracting strong interest from regional and global funds, driven by robust growth rates, as investors take bets on post-pandemic plays. "The most important thing we are trying to tackle is the distrust that's associated with the used-car industry," said Carsome's co-founder and chief executive, Eric Cheng, adding that consumers were becoming more open to buying cars online during lockdowns imposed in countries over the past year. Six-year-old Carsome's competitors include Singapore's Carro and Indonesia's OLX Auto, part of OLX Group, which runs global trading platforms. Mr Cheng said Carsome, which also operates in Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, has been ramping up its retail centres and expanding its offerings, which include a five-day refund policy and a one-year warranty. Carsome is looking to almost treble its revenue to ne...

Surging Covid-19 cases dampen US consumer confidence, house prices post record gains

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - US consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August as worries about soaring Covid-19 infections and higher inflation dimmed the outlook for the economy. The survey from the Conference Board on Tuesday (Aug 31) showed consumers less inclined to buy a home and big-ticket items like motor vehicles and major household appliances over the next six months, supporting the view that consumer spending will cool in the third quarter after two straight quarters of robust growth. Still, more consumers planned to go on vacation, indicating a rotation in spending from goods to services was underway as economic activity continues to normalize following the upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Increased spending on services, which account for the bulk of economic activity, should keep a floor under consumer spending. "The report does raise the warning flag that if the pandemic worsens, and given the continued unwillingness of many to get vaccinated that is a real possibility, we could see people stashing away funds just in case," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economics. "We could see growth moderate faster than expected." The Conference Board's co...

‘Forever changed’: CEOs are dooming business travel – maybe for good

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Business travel as we've known it is a thing of the past. From Pfizer, Michelin and LG Electronics to HSBC Holdings, Hershey, Invesco and Deutsche Bank, businesses around the world are signaling that innovative new communications tools are making many pre-pandemic-era trips history. Take Akzo Nobel, Europe's biggest paint maker, for instance. At its Amsterdam headquarters, chief executive officer Thierry Vanlancker has spent the past year watching his manufacturing head, David Prinselaar, flap his arms, madly gesticulate and seemingly talk to himself while "visiting" 124 plants by directing staff with high-definition augmented-reality headgear on factory floors. A task that meant crisscrossing the globe in a plane before is now done in a fraction of the time - and with no jet lag. For MR Vanlancker, there's no going back. "Trips to drum up business could drop by a third, and internal meetings by even more," he said in an interview. "It's a good thing for our wallets and helps our sustainability targets. Our customers have had a year of training, so it's not a social no-no anymore to just reach out by video... There's an enormous efficiency element." A Bloombe...
