SINGAPORE - A former inspection officer of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has been charged with accepting a $600 bribe from a construction company in exchange for showing leniency during an inspection. Tan Ming Lie, a 32-year-old Singaporean, was handed two counts of corruption on Friday (Aug 27). Court documents state that Tan, a temporary worker at BCA, had allegedly taken the bribe in November last year from one Goh Tock Tan, the general manager of Domain Trading & Construction. Domain was then managing a construction site located at 69 Begonia Drive in the Yio Chu Kang area. The alleged bribe, which sought to induce Tan to "not show disfavour" in a BCA inspection at the site, took the form of payment for consultancy services provided to Domain. At around the same time, Tan allegedly tried to obtain bribes from a project manager of construction company Sin Hock Keong in exchange for the same benefit. SINGAPORE - Sniffer dogs are being used at border checkpoints to detect the smuggling of endangered animals, and items such as elephant ivory and pangolin scales, to further clamp down on wildlife smuggling. This new K9 unit under the National Parks Board (NParks) is specially trained to sniff out threatened and contraband fauna and timber that may be hidden in cargo or luggage. This comes as Singapore gears up for its ban on all trade in ivory, which will go into effect next week. The dogs' heightened sense of smell will allow them to detect items that may not be spotted by other methods, such as using radiographic scanners and visual inspections. There have been many seizures of pangolin scales and ivory at Singapore's borders over the years. In April and July of 2019, a total of 37.4 tonnes of pangolin scales were seized. SINGAPORE - Trains along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) will arrive at stations every five minutes during peak hours and every nine minutes off-peak, when the second stage of the line opens on Saturday (Aug 28). This is up from the current frequency of 10 minutes during peak hours and 15 minutes during off-peak hours at the first three stations of TEL in Woodlands. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it will review the frequencies as ridership increases along TEL. Trains generally arrive at intervals of two to three minutes during peak hours from 7am to 9am on other MRT lines, and about five to seven minutes off-peak. The new six-station stretch, named TEL2, connects Springleaf, Lentor, Mayflower, Bright Hill, Upper Thomson and Caldecott stations.
