HONG KONG, Aug 25, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - ESPRIT HOLDINGS LIMITED ("Esprit", "the Company" or the "Group;" HKEx: 00330) has today announced its unaudited financial interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2021 (the "Period"). Group revenue for the Period was approximately HK$3,872 million, a marginal decrease of around 5.8% from the six months ended 30 June 2020 (the "Corresponding Period"), primarily resulted from lower revenue in Europe, (approximately 14.4%) due to stringent pandemic related operating restrictions, as well as the Company's temporary exit from Asia Pacific and the closure of several low-performance stores. The reductions were tempered by a stronger performance from the Company's digital operations, which recorded an increase of approximately 17.3%. During the Period, the Esprit website and third-party e-commerce partners continued to trade during lockdown and, as a result, a large portion of the Company's sales were generated online. This business model allowed the Company to mitigate some of the negative impact that the pandemic had on the retail segment.Mr. DALEY Mark David, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "There is no qu...

Top Indonesia bank bolsters digital arm to fend off tech giants Gojek, Sea

SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - PT Bank Central Asia will invest US$200 million (S$271 million) into its digital arm to fend off competition from tech giants Gojek and Sea that are expanding into one of the world's largest unbanked markets. The South-east Asian nation's biggest lender by market value will use the funds to help Blu, its one-month old digital unit, to increase market share ahead of an initial public offering for two years' time, BCA president director Jahja Setiaatmadja said in an interview from Jakarta. He plans to increase Blu's capital to 4 trillion rupiah (S$380 million), from about 1 trillion rupiah currently. For tech giants, Indonesia offers an opportunity to reach more than 83 million people - nearly a third of its population - who still lack access to formal financial services. With a population strewn across thousands of islands, many of the country's lenders are struggling to reach potential customers and banking services, while mobile phones offer a solution. BCA, once the world's most expensive bank, lost its title to smaller digital banks like PT Bank Jago whose market value leapfrogged traditional lenders. Investors piled into Jago after Gojek and Singapore's ...

Goldman Sachs mandates Covid-19 vaccines for its workers and visitors

NEW YORK (NYTIMES) - Goldman Sachs told employees on Tuesday (Aug 24) that it would require anyone who entered the bank's US offices, including clients, to be fully vaccinated starting Sept 7, making it the most prominent Wall Street bank to issue such a broad requirement. The announcement, in a memo obtained by The New York Times, comes a day after the Food and Drug Administration gave full approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, a move that many large corporations had been seeking before making mandates. US President Joe Biden seized on the FDA's approval, urging private businesses to protect their workers through vaccinations. "If you're a business leader, a nonprofit leader, a state or local leader, who has been waiting for full FDA approval to require vaccinations, I call on you now to do that," Mr Biden said on Monday. "Require it." Companies have been consulting with advisers for months about whether to mandate vaccines, but have been wary of employee pushback and potential litigation. The quick spread of the highly contagious Delta variant and prominent first moves by large corporations like Walmart and The Walt Disney Co helped to expedite those talks. Now, the FDA appro...

Tan Chong returns to profit in first half, but expects car business to stay challenging

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Auto dealer Tan Chong International reported earnings of HK$78.6 million (S$13.7 million) for the first half of 2021, swinging back into profit following a HK$46.1 million net loss in the same period last year. The company's revenue for the period was nearly HK$6.2 billion, an increase of 6 per cent from that in the first half of 2020, according to its interim results for the six months ended June 30. Its directors have declared an interim dividend of 1.5 Hong Kong cent per share for H1 2021. Tan Chong said the automotive business of the group remains challenging, with the business environment remaining fluid amid new strains of Covid-19 as well as geopolitical factors. It added that measures to curb Covid-19, including lockdowns, had caused "almost total suspension" of the group's operations in several of the 11 Asia-Pacific markets in which it operates. However, its non-automotive segment was "satisfactory", helped by the disposal gain in one of the group's properties in Singapore that it no longer requires, the mainboard-listed company said. Net asset per share as of June 30 was HK$5.95, a decrease from the HK$6.05 recorded end-December 2020. In ...

Denso readies war chest to become world’s top car part supplier

TOKYO (BLOOMBERG) - Japan's Denso Corp is gunning for the title of top-selling automotive parts supplier by stoking its electrification push with a bond sale and setting aside hundreds of billions of yen for deals. Denso, the world's No. 2 automotive parts supplier in terms of sales, plans to roughly double revenue from electrified parts to 1 trillion yen (S$12.35 billion) by fiscal 2025. It aims to double that figure again by fiscal 2030, chief financial officer Yasushi Matsui said in an interview. Mr Matsui sees EV parts as a key value generator, capable of pushing Denso above the current top-selling automotive parts maker, Germany's Robert Bosch GmbH. "The arena they'll chase behind us in is electrification," Mr Matsui said. "After all, we've been in that field for a long time." Indeed, Denso entered the EV parts arena earlier than many others, making various components for the world's first mass-produced hybrid passenger car - Toyota Motor's Prius - since the 1990s. Today, it claims roughly one-third of the market for inverters, a critical part that converts currents from batteries in battery-electric and hybrid cars. Denso gets about half of its revenue from Toyota, with the r...

Wall Street ends higher with records for S&P 500, Nasdaq

NEW YORK (AFP) - US stocks marched higher on Tuesday (Aug 24) as optimism overwhelmed fears about Covid-19, causing oil prices to rise and sending the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to new records. Positive earnings reports and upbeat economic data underpinned the third straight positive session for major Wall Street indices. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up less than 0.1 per cent to close at 35,366.26, while the broad-based S&P 500 gained nearly 0.2 per cent to finish at a record 4,486.23. The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 0.5 per cent to end at 15,019.8 – an all-time high and the first close above 15,000. Even amid the rapid spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19, Adam Sarhan of 50 Park Investments said sentiment has shifted to the view that the worst is over. And with all eyes on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s scheduled speech on Friday, markets are convinced the central bank will keep stimulus in place for an extended period, even if changes to its policy are made. “The bulls showed up again and defeated any bearish pressure on the market,” Sarhan told AFP. “It’s a tug of war between the bulls and the bears, and bears won last week but now the bulls wi...
