Singtel posts $445 million Q1 profit, reversing year-ago loss

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Singtel swung into the black with a net profit of $445 million for the first quarter ended June 30, compared with a net loss of $20 million a year ago on the back of an improved operating and business environment with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The telco on Thursday (Aug 12) also posted a 7.5 per cent increase in operating revenue to $3.8 billion, from $3.5 billion a year ago. Revenue growth was driven mainly by Singtel's Australian consumer business, where its operating revenue grew by 7.7 per cent to $1.7 billion, from $1.6 billion a year ago due to an 11 per cent appreciation of the Australian dollar. Assuming a constant exchange rate, operating revenue for the Australian consumer business fell 2.6 per cent. Still, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) for the business segment grew by 12 per cent on improved mobile postpaid average revenue per user, cessation of Covid-19-related customer fee waivers and rebates, as well as lower bad debts provision. Singtel's operating revenue in Singapore also rose 1.3 per cent year on year to $414 million, from $409 million the year before on higher mobile service, fixe...

Global investors bet on China’s rental property amid shifting political winds

SHANGHAI (REUTERS) - Beijing's regulatory firestorm is hitting large swathes of China's economy, but global investors including Blackstone and Warburg Pincus are ramping up bets on Chinese rental properties, judging the political wind is blowing in their favour. China has cracked down on private tutoring, brought monopolistic tech giants to their knees, and stepped up curbs on home buying. But Beijing is wooing capital to help provide rental housing and is attracting plenty of institutional interest. In China, "people need to be housed, but houses have become too expensive to buy. You need to have housing for rent," said Graeme Torre, managing director of APG Asset Management, which has entered China's rental housing market in partnership with US property developer and operator Greystar. "We like to invest with policy rather than trying to avoid it or invest against it. So I'd like to think it's politically correct," Mr Torre said, estimating APG will commit around 1 billion euros (S$1.59 billion) into Chinese rental housing over the next 3-5 years. Centralised long-term rental apartments - or multifamily as they're called in the United States - are the best solution to the housing...

In South Korea, self-made billionaires are overtaking old-money tycoons

SEOUL (BLOOMBERG) - A new elite of uber-rich entrepreneurs is shooting up the wealth rankings in South Korea, overtaking the families behind the country's decades-old sprawling conglomerates known as chaebol. Mr Brian Kim, the founder of mobile messaging app company Kakao, is the most prominent example, with a fortune of US$12.9 billion (S$17.5 billion). He recently replaced Samsung group heir Jay Y. Lee as the nation's richest person. But other self-made billionaires abound. There's Chang Byung-gyu who completed a listing of game developer Krafton just this week, and Bom Kim, a South Korea-born US national who took e-commerce giant Coupang public in the United States earlier this year. Seo Jung-jin, the founder of biotech firm Celltrion, is worth about US$10 billion. The changing of the guard is a sign that South Korea's US$1.6 trillion economy is entering a new era of growth, becoming less reliant on the family-controlled corporations that wield immense power in all aspects of life. Some experts say the new wealthy are more aware of rising inequality and are more willing to give back to society. Others question whether they'll be any different from those who built their old empir...

How Sweden became the Silicon Valley of Europe

STOCKHOLM (REUTERS) - As Klarna's billionaire founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski prepares to stage one of the biggest-ever European fintech company listings, a feast of capitalism, he credits an unlikely backer for his runaway success: the Swedish welfare state. In particular, the 39-year-old pinpoints a late-1990s government policy to put a computer in every home. "Computers were inaccessible for low-income families such as mine, but when the reform came into play, my mother bought us a computer the very next day," he told Reuters. Mr Siemiatkowski began coding on that computer when he was 16. Fast-forward more than two decades, and his payments firm Klarna is valued at US$46 billion (S$62.6 billion) and plans to go public. It hasn't given details, though many bankers predict it will list in New York early next year. Sweden's home computer drive, and concurrent early investment in internet connectivity, help explain why its capital Stockholm has become such rich soil for start-ups, birthing and incubating the likes of Spotify, Skype and Klarna, even though it has some of the highest tax rates in the world. That's the view of Mr Siemiatkowski and several tech CEOs and venture capitali...

Dow, S&P 500 end at records after US inflation report

NEW YORK (AFP) - Major US stock indices ended at records for the second session in a row on Wednesday (Aug 11) after a closely-watched US report showed inflation moderating in July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.6 per cent to 35,484.97 for its second straight record. The broad-based S&P 500 also ended at a fresh record, up 0.3 per cent at 4,447.70, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 0.2 per cent to 14,765.14. The inflation report showed consumer prices rising significantly for energy and food in July. But when those volatile items were left out of the calculation, the core CPI rose just 0.3 per cent, seasonally adjusted, just a third of the rate in June. The moderation in price growth “feeds into the ‘peak inflation’ narrative,” said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O’Hare, while adding that the report suggested inflation could still linger at high levels. Art Hogan, chief strategist at National Securities, described the report as “a mild positive,” adding that he expects stocks to trade in a flat to slightly higher trend in the coming sessions when there are fewer major economic reports scheduled. “It’s going to be the dog days of summer,” Hogan said. Facebook’s Latest Financial Report: VR/AR Business Profit Space Is Limited

New York, NY / TickerInsider / August 11, 2021 / Recently, facebook (NASDAQ:FB) released its second quarter earnings report as of June 30, and all the data were very bright. However, after the release of the results, its after-hours share price fell more than 3%, contrary to expectations. And this is mainly because it has some problems in business development and user growth. Facebook’s new earnings report: gloom behind the bright results The results show that Facebook’s total revenue for the second quarter was US$29.08 billion, up 56% year-on-year; net profit was US$10.39 billion, up 101% year-on-year. Specifically from a business perspective, the main two business revenues have increased. Revenue from the advertising business increased by 56% year-on-year to US$28.58 billion. On the one hand, the average price per ad rose by 47% year-on-year; on the other hand, the number of ads placed on the platform increased by 6%. The increase in ad prices and the increase in platform advertising volume were both affected by the epidemic, and as the epidemic recovers, facebook (NASDAQ:FB) expects total revenue growth to slow in the second half of the year. In addition, Apple has recently upda...

Man admits to insulting family member’s modesty by recording video of teen showering

SINGAPORE - A man was staying with his extended family in a Tampines flat when he used a mobile phone to record a video of an 18-year-old girl while she was taking a shower. The victim's paternal aunt is married to the offender's brother, the court heard. The 32-year-old offender, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victim's identity, pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Aug 11) to one count of insulting a woman's modesty. He was at home some time in 2017 when he placed his mobile phone on the ledge of a bathroom window. The girl later came home from school and spotted the device after she took a shower. She took the phone and saw that it contained a video of her showering. She immediately deleted the clip, threw the device on the floor and left the bathroom. The teenager, however, did not tell her family members about what had happened as she did not think they would believe her. Meanwhile, the man returned to the bathroom to retrieve his phone and noticed that its recording mode was off. After the incident, the victim felt fearful about going to shower at home or sleep there as she was worried that the man would insult her modesty again. Court documents did not disclose...

9 months’ jail, fine for father who bit, choked, tied young son and said he hated him

SINGAPORE - A delivery driver who bit his son and later choked him and tied him up with a bicycle cord was jailed and fined on Tuesday (Aug 10). The 36-year-old, who cannot be named due to a gag order, was jailed for nine months and fined $4,500. He pleaded guilty to two charges of ill treatment of a child and one charge each of voluntarily causing hurt and harassment. Another five charges, including one for a road rage incident, were taken into consideration for sentencing. In November 2018, the man's wife brought their two sons, aged five and one, to the polyclinic. The older boy bit his younger brother on the right thigh while they were playing. When the man found out about it that evening, he caned and bit his older son on the thigh, wanting him to feel how painful it was to be bitten. The police were called when the boy was brought for a planned visit to the hospital the next month, and a nurse saw the man handling his son roughly by grabbing him, forcing him to lie down and holding down his legs. The doctor also found injuries on the boy. In March 2019, the man was driving his van to collect parcels when the same boy vomited in the van. The man became angry, and later grabbed...

47 people, 7 firms in maritime sector punished for breaching Covid-19 rules

SINGAPORE - Seven companies and 47 individuals in the maritime sector got into deep water after breaching safe management measures. They were fined or had their licences suspended. Pleasure craft, harbour craft and ocean-going vessels were involved, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Wednesday (Aug 11). Fifty-two offenders were fined between $300 and $3,000 each while another two had the licences of their pleasure craft and harbour craft suspended. They were found to have violated the regulations from November last year to June this year. The MPA said that in some cases involving pleasure craft, the number of people aboard exceeded the maximum group size that was allowed for social gatherings. Separately, a shore-based personnel broke the rules by consuming the ship's provisions on board and not wearing the appropriate level of personal protective equipment. In another case, a long-term permit holder residing on board a harbour craft came ashore without MPA's approval. "There were also cases where agents failed to submit mandatory notifications to MPA on the boarding of a shore-based personnel," it said. MPA added that it is investigating several other incid...

Singapore ups trade forecasts again as Q2 non-oil exports surge 10.1%

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Singapore has raised its trade forecasts for the third time this year, on the back of strong second-quarter growth in sectors such as electronics and petrochemicals. Non-oil domestic exports (Nodx) could grow by 7 per cent to 8 per cent year on year in 2021, trade agency Enterprise Singapore (ESG) said in a review on Wednesday (Aug 11) - a bump up from the projection of 1 per cent to 3 per cent issued in May. And, with oil prices likely to stay high, total merchandise trade is now tipped to expand by 13 per cent to 14 per cent year on year, up from 5 per cent to 7 per cent in May. Besides a better-than-expected showing in the year to date, ESG also pointed to "higher oil prices and robust global semiconductor demand" as drivers of total trade in 2021. The rosier outlook came as Nodx was higher by 10.1 per cent in the April-to-June period, picking up from the 9.7 per cent rise in the first three months. Exports were lifted by an 8.5 per cent increase in shipments of non-electronics, such as specialised machinery for semiconductors, petrochemicals and primary chemicals. Still, the electronics cluster, which made up nearly one-quarter of Nodx, posted a...
