Temasek-backed payments firm Conductor readies US IPO: Sources

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Brazilian payments firm Conductor has hired banks for an initial public offering in the United States that could come as early as this year, as Latin America's financial sector is enlivened by the arrival of several newcomers, three sources familiar with the matter said. Conductor, which is backed by venture capital firm Riverwood Capital and payments processor Visa, is a provider of technology for financial services. Its tools allow retailers, banks and financial startups to offer credit cards and payment wallets to their clients, for instance. Investment banking units of Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Bank of America and Credit Suisse will manage the offering, the sources added. None of those banks immediately commented on the matter. The company also declined to comment. Should Conductor conclude a listing on a US exchange, it will follow in the footsteps of two other Brazilian payments companies, StoneCo and PagSeguro Digital. The sources did not say which US exchange Conductor was likely to pick for the listing, how much money it would seek to raise, or what valuation it hoped for. Conductor has 95 million users and processes US$20 billion (S$27 billion) in pay...

Google parent Alphabet hits record quarterly revenue, profit in ad boom

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - Google parent Alphabet's quarterly revenue and profit surged to record highs, the company reported on Tuesday (July 27), powered by a rise in advertising spending as more consumers shopped online. Shares of Alphabet, the world's largest provider of search and video ads, rose 5 per cent in extended trading after the results, which handily beat analyst estimates. Shares of Facebook, which competes with Google in web ad sales and reports its own results on Wednesday, rose 1.3 per cent. Overall, it was a stellar day for the big US tech companies - Apple and Microsoft also reported record earnings. With consumers spending more time online during the coronavirus pandemic, retailers have been pushing to reach them there, whether they are shopping for products using Google search or watching videos on YouTube. The nascent US economic rebound that has accompanied the vaccine roll-out and the easing of restrictions is also helping as consumers are enjoying increased mobility and options for purchases of all kinds. "Alphabet has benefited from the general return of ad spend to the market and especially the balance of that return, which is more focused on digital channels...

Apple quarterly profit nearly doubles but shares fall after iPhone chip supply warning

SAN FRANCISCO (REUTERS) - Apple said a global chip shortage that has bit into its ability to sell Macs and iPads will start to affect iPhone production and forecasted slowing revenue growth, sending its shares lower. The tech giant on Tuesday (July 27) also posted net profit in the just-ended quarter that nearly doubled to US$21.7 billion (S$29.5 billion) on growth in iPhone sales and digital services. Apple executives said revenue for the current fiscal fourth quarter will grow by double-digits but be below the 36.4 per cent growth rate in the just-ended third quarter. Growth will also slow in Apple's closely watched services business, they said. In a conference call with investors, Apple executives also said that the global chip shortage had a less severe impact than feared in the company's third quarter but will worsen in the fourth quarter, extending to iPhone production. Chief executive Tim Cook said the affected chips are made with older technology but are needed to make the company's flagship device. "We do have some shortages," Mr Cook said, "where the demand has been so great and so beyond our own expectation that it's difficult to get the entire set of parts within the le...

Mute Offers Preview of Long-Awaited Layer 2 DEX Set to Launch

San Francisco, CA / SEAPRWire / July 27, 2021 /- Recently, Mute, a project building solution that make the defi space more accessible and useful to all, has launched a beta version of Mute Switch, their forthcoming DEX platform. While 2021 has thus far been a banner year for digital finance—and defi in particular—the ascension of this still-nascent sector and the enthusiasm engendered by the significant potential it possesses have not eliminated its flaws. For as long as crypto has been around, pricing and scalability issues, like the two ends of a single pincer, have kept it from realizing more fully the potential it has as a transformative financial instrument. A mere surface analysis of Ethereum's recent performance does much to demonstrate how problematic these issues are. While ETH experienced unprecedented growth as the underlying vehicle powering much of defi, the growth was not sustainable primarily due to scalability limits and correlated high gas fees—at times ranging into hundreds of dollars—hamstringing users and pricing others out of the market. The remedy to this has been sought by building a successive layer on top of the primary blockchain, or what is now considered...

Vacant premises in Pasir Panjang Road can be alternative distribution site for food supplies

SINGAPORE - The former Pasir Panjang Distriparkhas been identified as a possible alternative temporary distribution site in the event of disruptions in Singapore's food supply chain. Announcing this during her visit to the now-vacant premises, at 151 Pasir Panjang Road, on Tuesday (July 27), Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said Covid-19 clusters can cause short-term disruptions to the operations of Singapore's fishery ports and distribution centres. This was the case on July 17, when Jurong Fishery Port was closed due to a Covid-19 cluster. Shoppers were later seen snapping up fish in wet markets, while fish suppliers took to social media to announce they would not be taking new orders. Some market stalls selling fish sold out early for the day. On Monday, Ms Fu told Parliament that an alternative site was being made available for use in the event of another closure of the fishery ports or Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market. She said at the site on Tuesday: "In our food supply chains, our fishery ports and Pasir Panjang wholesale centres are important nodes - fishery ports for fish, and Pasir Panjang wholesale centre for vegetables and fruits." She added that t...

Singapore aims to capture areas in aviation industry that will grow in 5 to 10 years

SINGAPORE - The Government has identified certain growth areas within the aviation industry that are expected to recover strongly in the next five to 10 years, and is trying to make sure the country captures these, Manpower Minister Tan See Leng said in Parliament on Tuesday (July 27). He said he could not divulge what these growth areas are for now but they have been identified by the Emerging Stronger Task Force, together with the Economic Development Board and various other agencies. More details should emerge in the coming weeks, he said. His comments come as forecasts for the aviation industry's recovery remain grim, with the lifting of border restrictions slow and more transmissible strains of Covid-19 wreaking havoc on travel plans. Mr Desmond Choo (Tampines GRC) had asked if there could be a permanent reduction in manpower requirements within the aviation and tourism-related sectors. This was not answered directly. "What we are trying to do is to ensure that as we come out of this particular pandemic in this crisis, we want to be able to anchor our skill sets in that particular (growth) area," Mr Tan said. "Given our hub status, given our credibility and also the strength o...

Republic Polytechnic student given probation for taking upskirt videos, clips of women in toilet

SINGAPORE - An information technology student from Republic Polytechnic (RP) was stationed at Jurong Medical Centre during his internship when he recorded videos of multiple women in a toilet. Gerald Che Hong Yao, now 21, also recorded upskirt videos of women in other places including lifts or while they were on escalators. The Singaporean was sentenced to two years' probation on Tuesday (July 27) after he pleaded guilty to three counts of voyeurism. He has to remain indoors from 11pm to 6am every day and perform 60 hours of community service. His parents were bonded for $5,000 to ensure his good behaviour and he has been banned from owning a mobile phone with video-recording or photo-taking functions. Che told the court on Tuesday that he has been suspended from school. In an earlier statement, the polytechnic told The Straits Times that it takes a "strong view against sexual misconduct" and will not hesitate to mete out disciplinary action. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Stephanie Chew said that in September last year, Che began his internship at National University Hospital as an IT support employee. Then in January, he was stationed at Jurong Medical Centre. On multiple occasio...

Schools should not be a fortress but a second home: Chan Chun Sing on balancing security needs

SINGAPORE - Security needs at schools will be balanced without losing the sense of safety, trust and homeliness of the school environment, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (July 27). He noted that in enhancing security at schools, the Ministry of Education (MOE) does not want to compromise the quality of school experience for students and staff. The key to staying safe lies not in more intrusive security measures, but in prevention and enhanced community vigilance, Mr Chan said in a ministerial statement in Parliament addressing concerns following the River Valley High School incident. "We do not want to turn our schools into fortresses, which will create unease and stress among our staff and students. "We also do not wish to paradoxically engender a siege mentality among students and staff, causing them to take extreme measures to protect themselves, at the expense of a shared sense of security," added the minister. On July 19, a 16-year-old student allegedly killed a 13-year-old male schoolmate with an axe in a school toilet. Preliminary investigations showed the two students had not known each other before the incident and that the axe was purchased online. The ...

‘Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness’: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - A society-wide effort is needed to prevent tragic incidents like the death of the River Valley High School student from happening again, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (July 27). He highlighted the need for a community safety net for everyone - especially young people - and encouraged people to look within their social circles for a start. "Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness," said Mr Chan as he appealed to the public to not stigmatise those who come forward to seek help - be they students, staff, parents or families. "Let this incident motivate all of us to take down our barriers and treat struggling individuals who step forward with care and compassion," he told the House. The minister called on families to spend more time listening to the thoughts and feelings of their children, letting them share what they find stressful and giving them space to process their emotions. Sharing his own experience as a parent, Mr Chan said: "We can have more frank conversations with our children and families on the definition of success. "As a parent myself, I have come to realise that success must be defined by helping my children realise the...
