SINGAPORE - Some farms in Singapore are leveraging technology to boost yields, but one high-tech farming company here is now looking to sell more than just its produce. Local vegetable company Sky Urban Solutions on Tuesday (March 16) launched a new micro-farming system that combines aquaculture, vertical vegetable farming and customisable spaces for storage or more, which it wants to export around the world. SINGAPORE - The SafeEntry check in to public venues will become a simpler and faster process from April 19 with a new tap-in system. The new SafeEntry Gateway Box was launched on Tuesday (March 16) at Nex mall in Serangoon Central by the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO). It was trialled at the mall from Feb 15. To check in, visitors with the TraceTogether app or TraceTogether tokens can tap their devices on the gateway box, which is slightly larger than a smartphone. Alternatively, an operator of a venue, such as a supermarket or large shop, can download an updated version of the SafeEntry (Business) App on his phone and use the phone, instead of the gateway box, for visitor check ins. The SafeEntry Gateway system is being planned for a rollout at selected crowded venues such as shopping malls, large standalone retail stores, cinemas, hospitals, polyclinics and Mice (meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions) venues hosting more than 100 participants. SINGAPORE- A housewife, unhappy at seeing fingerprints on her kitchen windows, forced her domestic helper to hit her own mouth with a meat pounder about 50 times. Mun Sau Yeng, 41, was sentenced on Tuesday (March 16) to 15 months' jail. The court heard that Mun ordered her Indonesian helper Yuni Dwi Lestari, now 26, to inflict pain on herself on Feb 4, 2019. Ms Yuni later felt that three teeth in her lower jaw had come loose. Still unhappy as she wanted the maid to lose her teeth, Mun took the mallet-like pounder and struck Ms Yuni's teeth once, chipping one of them. The Singaporean had pleaded guilty in a district court to three counts of maid abuse. Four other similar charges were considered during sentencing. Deputy Public Prosecutor Colin Ng said that the maid started working in Mun's Anchorvale Drive flat in Sengkang in April 2018. SAF to replace IPPT preparatory, remedial training with new FIT programme from April 1

SINGAPORE - The remedial and voluntary preparatory training aspects of the individual physical proficiency test (IPPT) will be replaced by a new 10-session programme, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) said on Monday (March 15). The NS Fitness Improvement Training (FIT) programme will be available from April 1 this year at 45 locations islandwide. There are currently 13 sites where NSmen can undergo training. Under the new programme, NSmen will be able to choose from at least six different NS FIT training activities to fulfil the required 10 sessions. They can register for sessions through the ns.sg portal from March 25. Currently, those unable to pass their IPPT can opt for 10 voluntary IPPT preparatory training sessions, or participate in up to 20 remedial training sessions. Brigadier-General Kenneth Liow, director of national service affairs, said NS FIT will streamline this "complicated" system of annual fitness requirements into one common programme. SINGAPORE - When the circuit breaker last year put a halt to face-to-face classes and physical training sessions, Assistant Superintendent Venu Arsh got creative to keep his trainees physically and mentally fit. The senior trainer with the Singapore Prison Training Institute conducted daily hour-long live Zoom fitness sessions for his prison officer trainees from his home. The 41-year-old also used a digital journal mobile app, so trainees could enter password-protected reflections to share with trainers. When in-person training resumed in August last year, ASP Venu, with a team of trainers, put together a revamped physical training session to incorporate technical manoeuvres the trainers would need on the job. ASP Venu was named Home Team Trainer of the Year (Full Time) in December last year.
