Singapore ranked third as least corrupt country in the world, top in Asia: Transparency International

SINGAPORE - Singapore has again made it to the top ranks of the least corrupt countries in the world based on a global survey released annually. The Republic along with Finland, Switzerland and Sweden scored 85 points each, tying for third place in the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index released by the global anti-graft movement, Transparency International (TI), on Thursday (Jan 28). Denmark and New Zealand earned 88 points each to tie for top spot among the 180 countries and territories surveyed. Singapore took top spot in Asia, and was the only Asian country to make it to the top 10. TI chair Delia Ferrerira Rubio said the Covid-19 pandemic in the past year was as much a health and economic crisis as well as one of corruption which the world was failing to manage. "Those with higher levels of corruption have been less able to meet the challenge," she noted. "But even those at the top of the (index) must urgently address their role in perpetuating corruption at home and abroad." Corruption often intensifies the effects of a crisis, and when combined with a public health emergency like Covid-19, poses a threat to lives and livelihoods, said TI. The Berlin-based non-governmental orga...

3,000 hotel staff in S’pore receive Covid-19 vaccination

SINGAPORE - About 3,000 workers in the hospitality industry have received the Covid-19 vaccine as at Monday (Jan 25), after an inoculation programme for the industry was rolled out on Jan 15. About two-thirds are staff in stay-home notice (SHN) dedicated facilities, said Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan on Thursday. He was speaking on the sidelines of a visit to the vaccination centre at Raffles City Convention Centre, where he witnessed hospitality staff receiving their first shot. The industry was picked as an early recipient of the vaccine, as its workers have been on the front line since March last year, with 70 hotels serving as SHN dedicated facilities, said Mr Tan. He emphasised that vaccination is just one of the country's pillars in the fight against Covid-19, alongside testing, contact tracing and safe management measures. Mr Tan said the inoculation programme will give workers in the industry confidence, especially with the risk of exposure to the virus when attending to those travelling from overseas. Singapore Hotel Association president Kwee Wei-Lin hopes the vaccination programme will also help return the industry to some normalcy. "We hope it bring...

Asia stocks follow Wall Street plunge on stock valuation worries

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Asian stocks skidded on Thursday (Jan 28) after Wall Street sank amid deepening concerns about stretched valuations in stock markets, while the US dollar and bonds strengthened. In early Asian trade, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 benchmark lost 2.22 per cent, Japan's Nikkei fell 1.97 per cent and South Korea's Kospi index lost 1.84 per cent. S&P futures pulled back 1 per cent. Adding to the market worries was the outcome of Federal Reserve's policy meeting. While the Fed kept settings unchanged as expected, policymakers flagged a concerning slowdown in the pace of the economic recovery. On Wall Street, the benchmark S&P 500 index fell nearly 2.57 per cent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.05 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.61 per cent. Boeing dragged on the Dow by falling 3.97 per cent on a US$6.5 billion (S$8.65 billion) charge for its delayed 777X jetliner and crash-plagued 737 MAX. Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney, said the wider stock selloff was surprising, given strong fourth-quarter results from tech giants. Sea and Gojek can target Indonesia’s 83 million who lack bank access

JAKARTA (BLOOMBERG) - Sea Ltd and Gojek are snapping up Indonesian lenders, betting they can make headway into one of the world's largest unbanked markets. The buying spree is set to continue as financial technology firms set their sights on the nation's more than 175 million Internet users, many of whom rely on online banking services. Sea has purchased PT Bank Kesejahteraan Ekonomi this year, while Gojek made its biggest fintech investment by spending about US$160 million (S$212.9 million) to boost its stake in PT Bank Jago in December. While Indonesia is by far the largest fintech market in South-east Asia, it's one of the few that don't license digital-only banks. The UK, Hong Kong and Singapore have allowed virtual lenders, while neighboring Thailand and the Philippines are actively studying the matter. That means acquisitions are the only way into Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority is pushing for more consolidation among its more than 1,600 commercial and rural banks in lieu of issuing new licenses. Fintech firms should "cooperate with existing banks like what has happened so far," said Wimboh Santoso, who heads the regulator. "Banks aren't prohibited from working...

Epic battle over GameStop as ‘nerds’ take on Wall Street

NEW YORK (AFP) - An epic battle is unfolding on Wall Street with a cast of characters clashing over the fate of GameStop, a struggling chain of video game retail stores. The conflict has sent GameStop on a stomach-churning ride with amateur investors taking on the financial establishment in the mindset of the Occupy Wall Street movement launched a decade ago. Why have GameStop shares been so volatile? GameStop, a well-known retail chain whose business model of selling games on discs appears to have been overtaken by a move to the internet, has been the target of "short sellers," often big hedge funds which bet on a decline by selling borrowed shares in the hope of repaying at a lower price. But a group of amateur investors, organising using the online platform Reddit, has fought the trend. A group calling itself WallStreetBets with some three million members who exchange tips and boast about beating "the system," is credited with pushing up GameStop shares and roiling the Wall Street establishment. Some analysts have described the situation as a "nerds vs Wall Street" battle. Jaime Rogozinski, founder of WallStreetBets, said the movement "is able to do what Occupy Wall Street was n...
