Wall Street gains, S&P hits record closing high as CPI meets expectations

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Wall Street advanced on Friday (Dec 10) and the S&P 500 notched an all-time closing high, as market participants digested an inflation reading that was in line with consensus, but also marked the largest annual increase in consumer prices in nearly four decades. All three major US stock indexes advanced, with tech shares doing the heavy lifting. The indexes all ended the session higher than last Friday's close, and the benchmark S&P 500 posted its biggest weekly percentage advance since the week ended Feb 5, as waning jitters over the Omicron coronavirus variant helped fuel a broad rally early in the week. A report from the Labor Department showed consumer prices surged last month to a 6.8% annual growth rate, the highest reading in more than 39 years. "It would appear that today's reaction would indicate the markets were discounting the (CPI) reading," said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services in Hammond, Indiana. "The markets are always looking forward and perhaps today's reading is indicative of a peak versus a sustained level." Persistent inflation due to ongoing supply-chain challenges suggests the US Federal Reserve could ...

Man was on remission order when he allegedly dragged cop along with moving car

SINGAPORE - A man who allegedly drove off during a traffic police check and dragged an officer along the Central Expressway (CTE) last Saturday (March 27) was on remission order after his early release from prison last year. Singaporean Heng Yong Qin, now 31, was charged on Monday with causing grievous hurt to the officer by committing a rash act. Police said in a statement on Saturday evening that the policeman suffered multiple injuries and his condition was stable. They did not disclose details of his injuries. Heng had been released from prison last July after serving his sentence for offences that were not stated in court documents. The remission order involving his early release required him to stay out of trouble from July 11 last year to May 9 this year and to observe a daily curfew. Despite this, Heng is accused of breaching the curfew by failing to remain indoors in an Ang Mo Kio flat between Sept 27 and Oct 22 last year. Last Saturday, he was said to be driving a car along the CTE towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway at around 7.30am when the 36-year-old traffic police officer stopped him for suspected traffic violations. In their statement, the police said that Heng sudden...

4km Rail Corridor stretch between Hillview and Bukit Timah reopens

SINGAPORE - A stretch of the Rail Corridor has been reopened, with new features such as additional access points for visitors and restored rail infrastructure. The stretch of about 4km is between Hillview and Bukit Timah. It is between two conserved truss bridges, and is known as the Rail Corridor (Central). It had been closed since 2019 for restoration works. On Monday morning (March 22), Minister for National Development Desmond Lee took a walk along the trail with members of the Friends of Rail Corridor community group, which was formed in 2017. The Rail Corridor is a nature trail along the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway line connecting Singapore and Malaysia. The Malaysian rail service ceased operations here in 2011. In a pre-recorded speech sent to the media, Mr Lee said that Singaporeans' feedback was thoroughly reviewed as the authorities drew up plans for the stretch. Taking this feedback into account, physical remnants of the corridor's railway heritage were retained. This includes four bridges which were repaired and refurbished. Second, biodiversity and greenery along the stretch were enhanced, Mr Lee said. Native plants were added along the way, and night li...

Two Immigrants, One Unique Plan For A Biopharma

HONG KONG, Feb 2, 2021 - (ACN Newswire) - The American Dream is why the United States is considered the "land of opportunity," and why for centuries immigrants have flocked to our shores seeking their fortunes. Guo-Liang Yu, Ph.D., (China), and Sanjeev Redkar, Ph.D., (India), came to the U.S. in the 1980s. By anyone's reasonable measure, both have achieved the American Dream. However, their dream as scientists remained at arm's length. Their desire? Create a pharmaceutical company that leverages the best of what the U.S. and China have to offer toward discovering and developing new oncology therapeutics, while using the smallest drug development program possible to do so. This is the story of how the scientific careers of an intrapreneur (Redkar) and an entrepreneur (Yu) came together to cofound and co-lead Apollomics.Guo-Liang Yu, Ph.D., (China), and Sanjeev Redkar, Ph.D., (India), came to the U.S. in the 1980s. Circuit breaker trip coils along Tuas West Extension replaced; cable replacement to start next month

SINGAPORE - All 113 circuit breaker trip coils along the Tuas West Extension (TWE) on the East-West Line (EWL) have been replaced, with work to replace 150km of power cables along the stretch starting next month. Plans for these replacement works had been announced earlier after a massive three-line breakdown left more than 6,700 passengers stuck on stranded trains for up to three hours on Oct 14. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in an update on Thursday (Dec 17) that it has worked with rail operator SMRT and main contractor Alstom to change the trip coils. Trip coils are components in circuit breakers which isolate power faults. A faulty trip coil had failed to isolate a fault on the Tuas West Extension on Oct 14, which resulted in the problem snowballing. LTA said the early closures carried out last month along the Tuas-West Extension helped to accelerate completion of the trip coil replacement programme. On the power cable replacement, LTA said that the new batch of higher-specification cables are scheduled to arrive from mid-December. Works to replace existing cables will start next month on the section along Tuas Depot Intake and Tuas Link station. LTA said: "For a star...
