Apple delays employees’ return to office indefinitely

LOS ANGELES (BLOOMBERG) - Apple, facing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases and the fast-spreading Omicron variant, is delaying its corporate return-to-office deadline from Feb 1 to a "date yet to be determined." Employees were informed of the move via a memo sent by chief executive officer Tim Cook on Wednesday (Dec 15). An Apple spokesman confirmed the decision to Bloomberg News. The delay comes just weeks after the company asked employees to begin returning by February, a timeline that had already been pushed back several times. The lack of a firm date shows the struggle that companies face in trying to get their operations back to normal. Fellow technology giant Microsoft scrapped its return-to-work date in September. "We are delaying the start of our hybrid work pilot to a date yet to be determined," Mr Cook said in the memo. "Our offices remain open and many of our colleagues are coming in regularly, including our teams in Greater China and elsewhere." He cited as reasons the "rising cases in many parts of the world and the emergence of a new strain of the virus". Mr Cook also strongly encouraged employees to receive vaccinations and booster shots, saying "this is by far the best ...

Apple quarterly profit nearly doubles but shares fall after iPhone chip supply warning

SAN FRANCISCO (REUTERS) - Apple said a global chip shortage that has bit into its ability to sell Macs and iPads will start to affect iPhone production and forecasted slowing revenue growth, sending its shares lower. The tech giant on Tuesday (July 27) also posted net profit in the just-ended quarter that nearly doubled to US$21.7 billion (S$29.5 billion) on growth in iPhone sales and digital services. Apple executives said revenue for the current fiscal fourth quarter will grow by double-digits but be below the 36.4 per cent growth rate in the just-ended third quarter. Growth will also slow in Apple's closely watched services business, they said. In a conference call with investors, Apple executives also said that the global chip shortage had a less severe impact than feared in the company's third quarter but will worsen in the fourth quarter, extending to iPhone production. Chief executive Tim Cook said the affected chips are made with older technology but are needed to make the company's flagship device. "We do have some shortages," Mr Cook said, "where the demand has been so great and so beyond our own expectation that it's difficult to get the entire set of parts within the le...

Epic Games CEO cites Apple’s ‘total control’ over iPhones at first day of antitrust trial

OAKLAND, California (REUTERS) - The chief executive of "Fortnite" creator Epic Games testified on Monday (May 3) that he knew he was breaking Apple's App Store rules by putting Epic's own in-app payment system into the game last year but wanted to highlight Apple's sway over the world's iPhone users, which now total one billion. "I wanted the world to see that Apple exercises total control over all software on iOS, and it can use that control to deny users' access to apps," Tim Sweeney said from behind layers of plexiglass in a federal courthouse in Oakland, California, on the first day of an antitrust trial against Apple. The trial, expected to run three weeks, brings to a head a lawsuit Epic brought last year that centres on two Apple practices that have become cornerstones of its business: Apple's requirement that virtually all third-party software for the world's one billion iPhones be distributed through its App Store, and the requirement that developers use Apple's in-app purchase system, which charges commissions of up to 30 per cent. Epic broke Apple's rules in August when it introduced its own in-app payment system in "Fortnite" to circumvent Apple's commissions. In respon...

Facebook profit nearly doubles as user ranks grow but Apple could spoil party

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP, REUTERS) - Facebook beat Wall Street expectations for both quarterly revenue and profit on Wednesday (April 28) but warned that growth later this year could "significantly" decline as new Apple Inc privacy policies will make it more difficult to target ads. A surge in digital ad spending during the pandemic when consumers shopped online, along with higher ad prices, helped Facebook revenue surge 48 per cent. Looking ahead, the world's largest social network said it will focus on building e-commerce features to expand beyond its ad business. Shares of Facebook rose 6.5 per cent to US$326.00 in extended trading on Wednesday. "We have a long way to go to build out a full-featured commerce platform ... but I am very committed to getting there," Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told analysts on a conference call to discuss earnings. Total revenue, which primarily consists of ad sales, hit US$26.17 billion in the first quarter ended March 31, beating analysts' average estimate of US$23.67 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. The digital advertising industry has boomed during the pandemic, benefiting Facebook and others including Google, whose parent...

Google cuts mobile app store fee in half amid scrutiny

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google on Tuesday (March 16) said it will halve the controversial fee it charges developers at its online shop for digital content tailored for Android-powered mobile devices. The commission taken at Google Play will be reduced to 15 per cent from 30 per cent starting in July, but just on the first US$1 million of revenue taken in annually by a developer, according to post by product management vice president Sameer Samat. The move comes amid pressure on Google and Apple to ease policies on their online marketplaces for the dominant mobile platforms. Apple announced a similar cut for small businesses last year. "We believe this is a fair approach that aligns with Google's broader mission to help all developers succeed," Samat said of the smaller bite on Play store transactions. Apple and Google require developers to use their payment systems for transactions at their online shops for mobile apps, services, and digital goods, taking a bite of 30 per cent or less of transactions as commission. The tech giants behind rival iOS and Android mobile operating systems maintain the commission is an industry norm and fair compensation for running trustworthy online shop...

Apple, Facebook score with pandemic-hit consumers

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Apple and Facebook on Wednesday (Jan 27) delivered stunning gains in profits and revenues over the past quarter, in the latest sign that Big Tech is delivering for pandemic-hit consumers around the world. Blowout quarterly updates from the two Silicon Valley giants highlighted how consumers increasingly relied on social media, digital services and gadgetry as they hunkered down for the global health crisis. Apple said profit in the holiday period rose 29 per cent from a year ago to US$28.7 billion (S$38.2 billion), while revenues grew 21 per cent to US$111.4 billion, with international sales accounting for nearly two-thirds of sales. Sales topped the US$100 billion mark for the first time as Apple won over pandemic-hit consumers with new gadgets and services, reporting solid gains in sales of iPhones, wearables and digital content. "We're gratified by the enthusiastic customer response to the unmatched line of cutting-edge products that we delivered across a historic holiday season," chief executive Tim Cook said. The news was similar at Facebook, which saw its global user base increase in a world roiled by the coronavirus outbreak. Facebook reported profit of...
