S’pore students should develop diverse strengths to navigate more complex world: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - To navigate an increasingly complex and competitive world, Singapore students have to pursue more diverse interests and capabilities, beyond what is taught and tested in schools. How far the Republic can move in this direction and away from an overemphasis on academic grades depends on educators, parents and societal culture at large, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing on Monday (Aug 16). Highlighting diversity as key to alleviating the "unhealthy stress" of pursuing the same definition of success, he spoke of the need for diverse schools, education pathways, skills, perspectives and experiences. Mr Chan also highlighted the need for a diversity of schools with unique propositions to cater to different students. He noted that seven out of 10 students in a Primary 1 cohort progress to the polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education, and Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman is leading a review to ensure their education and training enable them to remain competitive in the job market. Mr Chan stressed the important role played by teachers and called on them to be "critical thinkers and communicators" who "read extensively, learn widely and reflect continuou...

‘Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness’: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - A society-wide effort is needed to prevent tragic incidents like the death of the River Valley High School student from happening again, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (July 27). He highlighted the need for a community safety net for everyone - especially young people - and encouraged people to look within their social circles for a start. "Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness," said Mr Chan as he appealed to the public to not stigmatise those who come forward to seek help - be they students, staff, parents or families. "Let this incident motivate all of us to take down our barriers and treat struggling individuals who step forward with care and compassion," he told the House. The minister called on families to spend more time listening to the thoughts and feelings of their children, letting them share what they find stressful and giving them space to process their emotions. Sharing his own experience as a parent, Mr Chan said: "We can have more frank conversations with our children and families on the definition of success. "As a parent myself, I have come to realise that success must be defined by helping my children realise the...

Meritocracy is work in progress ‘to refine and improve’ upon, says Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - Meritocracy in Singapore is a constant work-in-progress and care should be taken to avoid possible downsides, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing. This means keeping the definition of meritocracy broad instead of appreciating talent in a one-dimensional way, he said. It also means ensuring that meritocracy is continuous, rather than having "one high-stake exam... define anyone for life". In an address to a virtual audience of more than 10,000 educators at the opening of the Education Ministry's Teachers' Conference and ExCEL Fest, Mr Chan said: "People develop different strengths at different stages of life. "We must keep enabling porosity and look out for opportunities to allow different talents to develop at different paces. Even the successful must never be complacent." He added that those who are more privileged have a responsibility to pay it forward to those with less, in order for Singapore to be more inclusive. ExCEL Fest is a three-day virtual event that aims to connect teachers with the latest trends in their field, and showcases award-winning innovations by schools. In his speech, Mr Chan impressed upon teachers the importance of values that will anchor fu...

S’pore firms must innovate to seize opportunities in electronics, manufacturing: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - Companies here need to continue to innovate for Singapore to successfully capture new economic opportunities in electronics and manufacturing created by advances in technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Making this call on Tuesday (Jan 12), Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing encouraged companies involved in the distribution of electronic components and in wholesale trade to "take bold steps... and chart new paths of growth through innovation". "We also need our local hardware technology start-ups to continually innovate and develop new technologies, participate in (Singapore's) growth and improve the resilience of our manufacturing sector," he said. Speaking at the official launch of the PlanetSpark Innovation Centre in Changi Business Park, Mr Chan cited two emerging global trends the Government is trying to address that companies can play a role in: the transformation of the electronics and advanced manufacturing sectors, and the growing need to improve the resilience of supply chains. On the first trend, he noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated efforts to digitalise and this will continue as companies see...

Singapore’s education and training sector must adapt to stay competitive globally: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE - The education sector in Singapore may be well-regarded, but it must continue to keep pace in the global market, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said on Monday (Nov 2). Speaking to the media after a virtual visit to a class at the National Institute of Early Childhood Development, Mr Chan said there are "tremendous opportunities" to relook how training and education is conducted in the industry and beyond Singapore. He mapped out four broad changes in the education sector, which he said must evolve to remain competitive. The first change is that learning cannot be limited to the initial 15 to 20 years of a person's life anymore, said Mr Chan. "It is no longer about just compulsory education, but it is about continuing education," he said, adding that Singapore has to find new ways of educating adult learners, which will be an increasingly important sector for the country. Mr Chan said the second trend that Covid-19 has hastened is how learning is now not just offline, but also online. "There are both benefits of online and offline teaching methods. The challenge for us is to make sure that we combine both methods and get the best outcome for our students,"...

Struggle to find cheap room to rent near workplace

When Malaysian Chan Chee Hao walked across the Causeway to Singapore on the first day of the border reopening in August, he did not expect that he would join hundreds of other workers seeking cheap rooms to rent. Two months later, Mr Chan, 36, still has not found a room near his workplace in Sungei Kadut that meets his budget of $600 a month. "The rent kept rising for every unit that I saw. I found out that it would cost between $600 and $850 per person to share an air-conditioned room," said Mr Chan, an air-conditioner installer. "Most of the landlords also wanted a minimum of one-year lease when I am looking to rent just for six months." He entered Singapore on Aug 17 under the Periodic Commuting Arrangement scheme, which requires him to stay here for at least 90 days before he can return on home leave. "I already started calling the property agents from Malaysia, but all of them told me they didn't have anything available for me," said Mr Chan. He then asked his brother's landlord if he could share his brother's room until he found a place. The landlord said "yes", but the HDB rent in Sin Ming rose from $500 to $900, Mr Chan told The Straits Times. His commute was also 90 minute...
