Maid sentenced to 30 weeks’ jail for abusing 76-year-old bedridden woman

SINGAPORE - A domestic worker who was stressed by her workload took it out on the elderly bedridden woman she was employed to care for by abusing her. On one occasion, the Myanmar national pressed the base of a water bottle against the mouth of the woman who suffers from arthritis and is incapable of defending herself. In another incident, Aye Aye Naing, 40, pulled the elderly woman, 76, by her hair into a seating position. On Monday (Dec 6), Aye Aye Naing appeared before a district court and was sentenced to 30 weeks' imprisonment for abusing the vulnerable woman. She was convicted of three charges of voluntarily causing hurt towards a vulnerable person. One charge under the same offence was taken into consideration for her sentencing. The court heard that Aye Aye Naing was employed by the victim's daughter and lived with the family in a flat in Yishun. Her assault came to light when the the maid's employer installed a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in her mother's room after the elderly woman told her the helper was hitting her. Aye Aye Naing claimed the elderly woman had fallen down, and her employer initially gave her the benefit of the doubt. But CCTV footage, some of...

Man jailed 4 months for assaulting his elderly mother who has dementia

SINGAPORE - A man was sentenced on Wednesday (July 14) to four months' jail for assaulting his elderly mother who has dementia and is also a wheelchair user. Ling Heng Soon, now 64, had pleaded guilty in June to voluntarily causing hurt to Madam Ng Gung Huay - a vulnerable person. It was not his first brush with the law. The Singaporean was sentenced to four months' jail last November for assaulting a 60-year-old woman at Mei Ling Market & Food Centre in Mei Ling Street near Commonwealth Avenue in October 2018. She suffered facial wounds that left scars likely to be permanent. In the recent case, the court heard that he attacked his 84-year-old mother after she and her Indonesian domestic helper, Ms Eka Fransiska, visited his Chai Chee flat at around 7pm on Aug 7 last year. Soon after she turned up, the mother-and-son pair started arguing over matters that were not disclosed in court documents. Madam Ng then insisted that she wanted to go to the ground floor of the block of flats. Ling instructed Ms Eka to take Madam Ng downstairs, opened his metal gate and pushed his mother's wheelchair out of the flat. Madam Ng was in the wheelchair at the time. After that, he deliberately pushed...

Jail for drunk man who punched 12-year-old son in the face, called his elderly mother a loose woman

SINGAPORE - A man who punched his young son in the face and called his elderly mother a loose woman was jailed for four weeks on Thursday (July 1). The 48-year-old, who worked at Singapore Changi Airport, was drunk in both incidents. He cannot be named to protect the identity of his child. He had pleaded guilty to one charge each of voluntarily causing hurt, harassment and breaching a Personal Protection Order (PPO). Two other charges for harassment and using criminal force were taken into consideration in sentencing. One of the incidents happened on Dec 3, 2019, at about 9pm, when the man returned to his family's flat after drinking four cans of beer. He was not supposed to be there as his 74-year-old mother had taken out a PPO against him. They argued and his mother told him to leave, but instead he used an abusive word on his mother, referring to her as a loose woman. He continued to verbally abuse her even after the police arrived and arrested him. At about 4.30pm on Feb 25 this year, the man got into an argument with his mother and his 51-year-old sister at the family flat. It was over his 12-year-old son. He was again drunk at the time after consuming five cans of beer. When ...

I felt wronged, glad that truth is out: Police officer involved in Yishun incident

SINGAPORE - One of the police officers who was accused of bullying an elderly woman in Yishun has spoken out, saying that while the accusations were upsetting at first, he will not stop helping members of the public when duty calls. Station Inspector Jeff Lim Kok Hwee, 45, a deputy team leader at Yishun South Neighbourhood Police Centre, shared his side of the story, adding that he is glad that "the truth is out". On May 19, the Singapore Police Force refuted allegations circulating online that four police officers, including Station Insp Lim, had told the elderly woman off for not wearing her mask. The social media posts claimed that the officers had abused their authority in dealing with the elderly woman. Two days later, the fake news law was invoked by Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, requiring an Instagram user as well as the Singapore Uncensored and The Online Citizen Asia (TOC) websites to carry correction notices for their posts on the incident. But after TOC doubled down on its claims, the police released two clips of body-worn camera footage on Tuesday (May 25), taken from the officers involved in the incident. The footage showed Station Insp Lim buying the woman a pac...

Six months’ jail for man who molested elderly cleaner after she gave him money to buy food

SINGAPORE - A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to six months' jail for molesting an elderly cleaner after she gave him money to buy food. Chua Wee Meng pleaded guilty on Monday (April 19) to one count of outraging the 68-year-old woman's modesty. Another similar charge was taken into consideration during sentencing by District Judge Wong Li Tein. The victim, who was working as a part-time cleaner when Chua committed the offence against her, cannot be named because of a gag order to protect her identity. The court heard that on June 19 last year, the woman was waiting for the lift at the lobby of a Housing Board block in the Queenstown area. Chua approached her and asked for $4 to buy food. He molested her after she gave him half the amount. Shocked, she refused Chua's subsequent request for money. She then entered the lift and returned to her unit. The woman later told her daughter about the incident, and a police report was made. In sentencing Chua on Monday, District Judge Wong said the man had committed the offence on an elderly woman who "had demonstrated kindness to him". The judge also said the amount of fear caused by Chua's act to the woman cannot be understated, noting t...

No reunion lunch this year, but 180 elderly residents in Bukit Merah cheered by festive bentos

SINGAPORE - A decade-long tradition of reunion lunches for elderly residents living in Bukit Merah had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but 180 of the seniors still received a festive treat as bentos were distributed to them on Thursday morning (Feb 11). Mr Ong Chong Beng, 79, was all smiles when he received the bento set and a tote bag with two containers of pineapple tarts and two oranges. "I feel very happy receiving all these; I like eating Chinese New Year snacks," he said in Mandarin. Mr Ong has lived in the block for over 30 years and would go for the reunion lunches, which began in 2010. His favourite part of the lunches would be chatting and catching up with his neighbours. "This year we can't gather because of Covid-19, so I'm looking forward to next year, hopefully we can all meet up together," he added. The Henderson-Dawson Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC) and Henderson-Dawson Integration and Nationalisation Champions (INC) started hosting the Chinese New Year Eve lunches for elderly residents who live alone. However, safe distancing measures in place mean that a reunion lunch in a large group was not possible this year. On Thursday, more than 20 volu...

Man jailed for beating up his mother after she refused to reveal her ATM card’s PIN

SINGAPORE - A man attacked his elderly mother with her walking stick after she refused to disclose the personal identification number (PIN) of her automated teller machine (ATM) card. He even threatened to cut all of the 77-year-old's fingers with a knife. She was so badly injured that she only crawled out of bed the next day. He pleaded guilty to one count each of voluntarily causing hurt to his mother while robbing her and subsequently failing to report to the police for investigations. One other charge of possessing a false Singapore passport was taken into consideration during sentencing by District Judge Ronald Gwee. On Oct 16, 2018 at about 11pm, Yap and his mother, Madam Eunice Tsang Siew Geok, were in the unit she was residing in. Court documents do not state if they were living together. Wanting to withdraw money from his mother's POSB account for his own use, Yap asked her for the PIN of her ATM card. When she refused to tell him, Yap hit her multiple times with her walking stick. He also kicked and stamped on her body, pulled her hair and threatened to cut all of her fin...
