NTU team comes up with cheaper, safer helmet for cyclists

SINGAPORE - Scientists from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have developed a bicycle helmet that could be cheaper for cyclists, while offering them greater protection from accidents. They said their prototype, using a new carbon-reinforced thermoplastic, is tougher, stiffer and less brittle than helmets with an outer shell made of polycarbonate. "Our prototype helmet has been subjected to a barrage of internationally-benchmarked tests and has demonstrated the ability to provide greater protection for cyclists compared with conventional helmets", said Associate Professor Leong Kah Fai of the NTU School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, who led the team behind the prototype. Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday (July 22), Prof Leong added that his team is exploring options to scale up the manufacturing process of the helmet, but it could be two to three years before the prototype is commercialised. The helmet's outer shell consists of Elium, a new thermoplastic resin, reinforced with carbon fibre. This composite allows the outer shell to absorb more energy on impact over a longer period of time, while dissipating it more evenly throughout the helmet. As a result...

Shell starting new green businesses

(NYTIMES) - On a clearing at the edge of a farm field, 40 big rectangular boxes the size of shipping containers sit behind a tall fence. Packed inside are stacks of lithium-ion cells and other electrical equipment. Wired together, these units will form Europe's largest battery, the operators say, able to pump out powerful bursts of electricity to offset fluctuations in the power grid when ebbing winds or cloudy skies slow the generation of renewable electricity. As more power comes from wind and solar, the need for giant batteries will grow. One of the companies behind this £40 million (S$75 million) project is Royal Dutch Shell. Like other oil giants, Shell is under pressure to move away from climate-damaging fossil fuels, and it is recasting itself as more of a renewable energy company, looking for investments as it sidles towards a new future. Shell's foray into the English countryside in Minety, about 145km west of London, provides a clue to that future. But for a firm more used to offshore oil rigs and producing natural gas, the giant battery is part of what some critics see as a tortuous turnaround that, they say, must quicken to have a real impact on the factors causing clim...

Innovative UK Energy Company Increases Rewards for Residential Roof Top Solar

LONDON, Apr 26, 2021 - (ACN Newswire) - Rowan Energy has launched a new and leading global solar incentive programme; Rowan Rewards. The platform gives customers reward points similar to other loyalty programs for the energy produced by their roof top solar. Since the end of the feed-in tariff in 2019, there has been no financial incentive to adopt solar technology. Rowan however aims to change this by bringing carbon offsetting and blockchain together enabling greater environmental and financial rewards to its customers. The UK-based energy start-up passionately believes in making renewable energy production equally as valuable to its producers as it is for the environment.Right now, potential solar customers can earn a maximum 5.5p per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the electricity produced by the solar panels on their roof. This means, depending on your solar supplier, that it could take up to thirty years to get a return on investment, which is longer than the panels are expected to last.Rowan Energy residential customers can currently enjoy returns of up to 15.5p per kWh with the capacity for this figure to grow in future.

HONG KONG, Apr 26, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - In the past year, the global economy was hardly hit by the impact of COVID-19. In the first quarter of 2020, various localities suspended work and production due to the pandemic, resulting in a sharp decrease in industrial and commercial gas demand. However, after the resumption of work in full swing, the upstream price reduction policy was basically completed, and the retail prices of natural gas began to rise in some provinces, leading to a rebound in demand from industrial and commercial users and a further rise in the spread. Coupled with the surge in natural gas demand during the heating peak season in the fourth quarter, the gas segment was not impacted as a whole in 2020 and maintained a stable development.Breaking through value-added services as a new driver of growth in the year against the adverse market trendZhongyu Gas is a pioneer in the gas industry.
