90 jobs to be added with expansion of Labcorp facility in S’pore, as biomedical sector continues to grow

SINGAPORE - Around 90 additional research and engineering jobs will be created in the biomedical sector with the setting up of a new bioanalytical laboratory facility by leading contract research organisation Labcorp, and the expansion of its existing central laboratory here. The combined facility in Jurong East, which is the first of its kind in South-east Asia, "will add cutting-edge capabilities to our thriving biomedical ecosystem" and "make us an even more compelling regional biomedical hub, help us attract more leading-edge investments in the sector", said Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong on Wednesday (Nov 10) at the facility's launch. "In particular, Labcorp's new Good Laboratory Practice and Good Clinical Practice-compliant bioanalysis and immunochemistry platforms will provide bioanalytical testing services that are critical to early-stage development of biologics and vaccines in Singapore," noted Mr Gan. He said that job opportunities that come with the expansion include those in the healthcare sector, such as nursing coordinators to facilitate decentralised clinical trials, as well as data engineers to develop artificial intelligence technologies to assist in dia...

What Xi means by ‘disorderly capital’ is $2 trillion question for investors

SHANGHAI (BLOOMBERG) - If nothing else, Chinese President Xi Jinping is known for his pursuit of order. So how far the Chinese President's attack on the "disorderly expansion of capital" will go has emerged as a defining question for investors trying to navigate the country's wave of regulatory crackdowns. Since first appearing in a Politburo readout in December, the phrase has been employed by government agencies and researchers to explain actions against technology moguls, celebrities and private tutors that fueled a US$1.5 trillion (S$2 trillion) stock rout last month. The slogan, like "common prosperity", is among several Xi-isms feeding concerns that China is tilting away from free markets and back toward more ideologically driven centralised planning. Its meaning, however, is even more mysterious than its egalitarian-sounding cousin. The exact words "disorderly expansion of capital" have appeared only five times in documents directly connected with Mr Xi, according to a Bloomberg News review of nine years of the leader's speeches and meetings. All mentions came in the past 10 months. The phrase has appeared at least 38 times in the People's Daily newspaper, the Communist Part...

Singapore non-oil exports see slower 6% growth in April

SINGAPORE - Singapore's non-oil domestic exports (Nodx) expanded at a slower pace in April, with growth supported by non-electronics such as petrochemicals and specialised machinery. Shipments grew 6 per cent year on year last month, according to data released by Enterprise Singapore on Monday (May 17). This missed analysts' forecast for an 11.5 per cent expansion, as polled by Bloomberg, and was lower than the revised 11.9 per cent expansion recorded in March. On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, exports declined 8.8 per cent from March. Key electronics exports rose 10.9 per cent year on year for April, compared with the 24.4 per cent expansion the previous month. This was driven by growth in demand for items such as diodes and transistors. Meanwhile, non-electronic Nodx grew 4.7 per cent, following the previous month's 9.2 per cent increase. Shipments to Singapore's top 10 markets as a whole declined in April, due to dips in exports to the United States, European Union and Japan, although Nodx to China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand rose. Total trade surged 26.3 per cent year on year in April to $95.8 billion, continuing the 19.6 per cent expansion recor...

Japan factory activity expands at fastest pace since early 2018

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Japan's factory activity expanded in April at the fastest pace since early 2018 on a global demand recovery, a private sector survey showed on Friday (April 30), though new coronavirus curbs cast a shadow over the overall economic outlook. The activity expansion highlights the tailwind manufacturers have been getting from strong external demand, particularly from China, which forms the basis for keeping intact the economic recovery from last year's steep coronavirus drop. The final au Jibun Bank Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to a seasonally adjusted 53.6 in April, its most robust expansion since February 2018. That was up from a flash reading of 53.3 and the previous month's final of 52.7. It meant manufacturing activity came in above the 50.0 threshold that separates contraction from expansion for the third straight month. The PMI survey showed output also grew at its fastest pace since February 2018, while the taking on of new graduates at the start of the country's fiscal year in April and higher capacity needs due to increased orders boosted the rate of job creation. Manufacturers saw input prices rising for an 11th month on high de...

South Korea economy grows faster than expected as investment, exports bounce

SEOUL (REUTERS) - South Korea's economic recovery beat expectations in the first quarter, extending the country's export-led recovery and as the government maintained support for ailing small businesses. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew a seasonally adjusted 1.6 per cent in the March quarter from three months earlier, the Bank of Korea said on Tuesday (April 27), faster than the median estimate of a 1.0 per cent growth in a Reuters poll and following a 1.2 per cent expansion in the December quarter. Asia's fourth-largest economy has continued to gain momentum after shrinking 1.0 per cent last year, its worst contraction since 1998, driven by smokestack industries such as chip and electronic manufacturing, mostly for exports. GDP expanded 1.8 per cent year-on-year in the January-March period after shrinking a revised 1.2 per cent three months earlier, also beating an expected expansion of 1.1 per cent. Growth was driven by exports and facility investment, which rose 1.9 per cent and 6.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter, respectively. Private consumption grew at a slower 1.1 per cent on-quarter, after shrinking 1.5 per cent in the previous three months. In early April, South Korea steppe...
