How a green future could look like

(BLOOMBERG) - It's just after 5pm on Friday in late July 2035. You're driving home from work in your electric car. It's peaceful - more cars than ever run on a quiet battery, too. It was a good week. You're two months into an apprenticeship programme learning how to maintain wind turbines. Things were pretty rough for a few years after the factory where you used to make parts for internal combustion engines laid you off because the government banned new fossil-fuelled cars. But now you've joined a scheme that helps people find jobs in green industries. That's just a glimpse of the future in store if the policies contained in the European Union's Fit for 55 climate package become reality. The plan, which could require a trillion euros of investment, will be the most radical change to European economy since the creation of the euro and put the continent on a path to reach net-zero emissions by the mid-century. If the plans succeed, it will force Europeans to remake almost every aspect of the way they live, work and travel. On that day in July, 14 years from now, a panel on the wall in the downstairs hall beeps as you walk through the front door. It's set to tell you when an energy-ge...

Front-line workers, including cleaners, at Changi Airport to get $50 ez-link card

SINGAPORE - A thousand front-line workers at Changi Airport will receive ez-link cards with a stored value of $50 as a gift next month. The move to help with their transport costs is the result of a ground-up initiative by about 70 Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) officers who wanted to show their appreciation for the workers. Calling themselves Friends for Aviation (FFA), the group of officers said on Saturday (June 12) that cleaners, trolley and baggage handlers will be among the workers to benefit. FFA said that some of these workers now needed to travel more often for their routine Covid-19 testing, following stepped-up measures at the airport last month to guard against another cluster of Covid-19 cases emerging. A total of 43 workers at Changi tested positive for Covid-19 last month. This resulted in the closure of the terminal buildings to the public for an initial two weeks. The closure has now been extended indefinitely to allow the airport community to adjust to new safety measures. FFA's founder, Ms Angela Ng, who works as an aviation policy officer at CAAS, said the Covid-19 outbreak at Changi has added to the challenges in the aviation sector, which has bee...

Marina East Drive accident: Bike ride with friends during school holidays ends tragically for teen

SINGAPORE - A bicycle ride with two of his friends during the school holidays turned fatal for 14-year-old Muhammad Nur Shazly Mohd Ali. He was killed in a road accident with a truck on Monday (May 31) along Marina East Drive. Malay-language daily Berita Harian on Thursday quoted the teenager's aunt, Ms Nor Salinah Shalihen, as saying that family members were shocked by the death of the Damai Secondary School student, whom they affectionately called "Boy". "Boy liked to help people... many people came to offer their condolences. We don't know them, but they knew Boy," she said. The principal of Damai Secondary School was among those who visited the family, she said. Berita Harian said the funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon. The youngest of three children, Muhammad Nur Shazly was cared for by his grandmother, who lived with Ms Salinah in Bedok. A family friend, Ms Anith Athirah Rahwom, 36, who had watched the teenager grow up, said: "Shazly is a person who could get along with everyone, regardless of race or age. He was indeed loved by many. Our sad feelings cannot be expressed in words." She added: "We hope others take this as a lesson. We all have to be careful when cycling o...

Worried for safety of their family and friends in Myanmar

SINGAPORE - Student Susan Pyi, 21, spends every waking hour here worried for the safety of her family in Myanmar. The Singaporean, who was born and raised there, has a seven-year-old brother who lives with their mother and grandmother in Yangon. Ms Pyi lives in Singapore with her father. She said her mother often hears gunshots near their apartment. Ms Pyi is most concerned about her brother, who likes to go onto the balcony, where stray bullets could pose a risk. "I've seen a lot of pictures of kids getting hurt, so I'm really worried about him," she said. To make matters worse, she loses contact with her family on days when the authorities in Myanmar cut off access to the Internet. "I don't know what's happening and I just feel so helpless," she said. Protests, largely led by young people, broke out in several cities in Myanmar after military officials staged a coup on Feb 1 and detained the country's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, along with many other leaders of the National League for Democracy - Myanmar's elected ruling party. The military crackdown which followed left many dead and injured, and more than 1,000 people were arrested. Amid the ensuing chaos, word spread that...
