Watch search-and-rescue missions from home as RSAF open house goes fully virtual for first time

SINGAPORE - The Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) open house is going fully online this year for the first time. People can now watch search-and-rescue missions and examine aircraft up close in the comfort of their homes. The online open house site, launched on Friday (Dec 3), hosts a 3D virtual exhibition of more than 25 aircraft and ground-based air defence systems, online games and a series of videos that show RSAF pilots in action. This is very different from open houses of years past when people could see and be awed by RSAF assets in person, but organisers said the constraints of Covid-19 meant they started planning for the likelihood of an online open house about a year ago. They are hoping that it will give people a fresh perspective. "You can spin the assets around, zoom in and zoom out, look at them from different angles - we try to make it a bit more interactive," said Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Chua, head of the virtual open house. "In the past, it would also have been difficult to get so many aircraft together for a physical exhibition, but we can do this online. People can click on each of them to see the specifications," he added. The open house is on till Dec...

Crowds throng Istana open house to celebrate Deepavali

SINGAPORE - A queue had formed even before the gates to the Istana opened at 9am for an open house to celebrate Deepavali on Thursday (Nov 4). Among the early birds was Ms Lim Mui Eng, 50, a mechanical engineer, who came with her cousin. "We really like to travel but there's no travelling during the pandemic. So when we saw that the Istana would be open to the public, we decided to jump at the chance to do something different," said Ms Lim. The Deepavali open house, which is typically held every year, was cancelled last year in favour of a virtual presentation due to the pandemic. On Thursday, the open house - visitors had to apply for tickets that gave them a slot for a two-hour entry - did away with highlights of previous years such as performances, food trucks or souvenirs on sale. Safe distancing officers were seen patrolling the grounds to ensure people remained in groups of two, in keeping with prevailing Covid-19 restrictions. Still, the chance to visit the iconic Istana proved irresistible to many, given that its grounds had been closed to the public since February last year before it reopened on Aug 28 to celebrate National Day. Visitors were seen lounging and strolling in...

High Court awards PM Lee $370,000 in damages in defamation suits against TOC editor Terry Xu and article author

SINGAPORE - The High Court has awarded Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong a total of $370,000 in damages for two defamation suits he filed over an article published on The Online Citizen (TOC) website. He had separately sued TOC chief editor Terry Xu and Ms Rubaashini Shunmuganathan, the Malaysian author of the article that was published on Aug 15, 2019. The article, titled "PM Lee's wife Ho Ching weirdly shares article on cutting ties with family members", had quoted a Facebook post by PM Lee's sister, Dr Lee Wei Ling, saying their father, founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, had been misled by PM Lee into believing the family house at 38 Oxley Road had been gazetted by the Government. Ms Rubaashini did not enter an appearance to defend the suit against her and judgment in default was granted in favour of PM Lee. In a 64-page judgment released on Wednesday (Sept 1), Justice Audrey Lim said she was unable to accept Mr Xu's inference that PM Lee had, with an ulterior motive, misled Mr Lee Kuan Yew into believing that the house had been gazetted. "On the contrary, the evidence shows that (PM Lee) had supported (Mr Lee Kuan Yew's) wishes to demolish the house as he wanted to respect his ...

Istana Open House on Aug 1 postponed amid tightening of Covid-19 measures

SINGAPORE - The Istana Open House, slated for Aug 1, has been postponed, amid a tightening of pandemic measures here. The event was meant to celebrate National Day, and guests who had tickets for a previous scheduled open house on May 13 had been invited to return. That occasion - to mark Labour Day and Hari Raya Puasa - was cancelled due to a worsening Covid-19 situation then. "We apologise for any inconveniences caused," said the President's Office in a statement on Wednesday (July 21). The Istana has closed its grounds to the public since February last year due to the pandemic. The open house is popular among Singapore residents, with more than 12,000 visitors turning up on Jan 26 - the second day of Chinese New Year - last year. May 13 Istana Open House cancelled due to worsening Covid-19 situation

SINGAPORE - The Istana Open House event next Thursday (May 13) will be cancelled due to the worsening Covid-19 situation. The event has been cancelled due to the latest call from the Multi-Ministry Taskforce to reduce social interaction, said the Istana in a statement issued by the President's Office on Tuesday (May 4). Ticket-holders will be able to go to the next Istana Open House event with their existing tickets. The plan was to begin reopening the Istana to the public in stages, with the Covid-19 situation in Singapore stabilising in recent months. "However, since we announced the restarting of this open house, there has unfortunately been an increase in the number of local Covid-19 cases. We have therefore decided to err on the side of caution and cancel the Istana Open House," said the Istana. On April 28, the Istana had announced that it would open its grounds to the public for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The occasion was to mark both Labour Day and Hari Raya Puasa, which fall on May 1 and May 13 respectively this year. Before the pandemic, the Istana welcomed visitors on the public holidays of Hari Raya Puasa and Labour Day yearly. Last year's onset o...

More orchids, attractions for visitors at National Orchid Garden as enhanced display area opens

SINGAPORE - Visitors to The Sembcorp Cool House at the National Orchid Garden might feel like they have been transported into a cloud forest half the world away, with the cool air, a waterfall and orchids from across the globe. The facility is one of the jewels in the crown of the new Tropical Montane Orchidetum, which was opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Saturday (April 3). It comes after extensive enhancement work at the National Orchid Garden undertaken by the National Parks Board (NParks) from 2017 and at a cost of about $35 million. The work was expected to be completed in 2019 but was delayed due to design and technical challenges as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. The Orchidetum is designed to simulate the experience of ascending through a tropical montane forest and features orchids and other plants. A montane forest, also known as cloud forest, describes a terrain found in mountainous areas - an environment far removed from Singapore. The Orchidetum contains three display houses - The Sembcorp Cool House, the Yuen Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection and the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House - which have been expanded from their original sizes. The Sembcorp Cool House has b...

New Zealand central bank to consider housing in rate setting in move to cool prices

WELLINGTON (BLOOMBERG) - New Zealand's government will require the central bank to take account of house prices when it sets interest rates, stepping up efforts to rein in a rampant property market. The Reserve Bank's monetary policy remit will be changed so that the bank considers "the impact on housing when making monetary and financial policy decisions," Finance Minister Grant Robertson said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 25). The New Zealand dollar rose to its highest since 2017 as investors saw the move restricting the RBNZ's ability to run loose monetary policy. The kiwi dollar jumped about a third of a US cent to 74.55 cents, its highest since August 2017. The government is trying to cool an overheating housing market, which has been fueled by record-low borrowing costs after the RBNZ responded to the coronavirus pandemic by slashing its cash rate and embarking on quantitative easing. While many central banks are required to have consideration for financial stability in addition to their inflation targets, an explicit requirement to take house prices into account is unusual. RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr pushed back against Mr Robertson's initial proposal last year, saying that ...

NEC to Design Clearing House Systems in Support of Transport Fare Collection System Integration in Dhaka, Bangladesh

TOKYO, Feb 5, 2021 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) today announced it received an order to design clearing house systems in support of integrating transport fare collection systems under the "Project for Establishment of Clearing House for Integrating Transport Ticketing System in Dhaka City Area (Phase II)," a technical cooperation project conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and awarded to Katahira and Engineers International (KEI) and the Japan Development Institute. This order was placed with NEC by KEI and is expected to contribute to the convenience of passengers by enabling the use of common IC cards for transportation systems in Dhaka City, including the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system currently under construction. In October 2014, NEC and KEI received a joint order for Phase 1 of the same project from JICA, and contributed to the implementation of a transport fare collection system (Clearing House System) that allows public bus systems in Dhaka City to be used with a common IC card. In order to make common IC cards available not only for city buses but also for the MRT6 Line, which is scheduled to open partially in December 2021, th...

Couple fined $7,000 for trespassing on state land next to Seletar house for nearly 15 years

SINGAPORE - For close to 15 years, an architect and his wife unlawfully occupied 144.2 sq m of state land next to their three-storey house in Jalan Tari Zapin in Seletar, which was built in 2005 but had been left vacant since. The main gate, entrance driveway, two boundary walls and a fence of the house effectively annexed the parcel of state land - which was larger than a five-room Housing Board flat - as part of the couple's property. Part of the swimming pool also jutted out onto the enclosed land. The encroachments were discovered in 2013 when national water agency PUB implemented a drainage improvement project to alleviate flooding in the area. Following numerous requests and demands by the authorities, the offending structures were finally removed in December 2019. Tan Teck Siong and his wife Cheah Mee Poh - the first people to be prosecuted for trespassing on state land under the State Lands Encroachments Act - have been respectively fined $4,000 and $3,000 for their offences. The offence carries a maximum fine of $5,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both. Tan was fined another $5,000 under the Building Control Act for making false declarations in December 2005 that...
