Woman accused of pressing heated iron repeatedly on domestic helper’s arm to be charged
SINGAPORE - A 42-year-old woman will be charged on Wednesday (April 28) with causing hurt to her former Indonesian domestic helper. She is accused of pressing a heated iron on her domestic helper's right arm repeatedly, as well as hitting her eyes with her fists and clothes hangers. The alleged abuse took place between February and October last year, police said in a statement on Tuesday (April 27). The abuse was reported on Oct 30 last year, said the police without specifying who lodged the report. The domestic worker had returned to Indonesia at the time but later came back to Singapore to assist with investigations. The woman will face one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, one count of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means, and two counts of voluntarily causing hurt. For voluntarily causing grievous hurt, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined or caned. For voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means, an offender faces jail of up to seven years and a fine or caning. Woman who knocked into two people at Jurong carpark fined, disqualified from driving
SINGAPORE - A 33-year-old woman was fined $3,500 and disqualified from driving for nine months on Thursday (March 11) after she knocked into two people with her car at a carpark. Tan Chak Yee pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous hurt by a negligent act. Another similar charge was taken into consideration during sentencing. The court was told that at about 4.40pm on Oct 27, 2019, Tan and her husband left Block 252 Jurong East Street 24 after having lunch at the coffee shop. They intended to return to their home at Teban Gardens. Tan was driving while her husband sat next to her in the front passenger seat. But as she drove off from the parking space and turned left towards the sheltered crossing, she knocked into two women who were walking in front of the car with a trolley. A minibus driver stepped forward to assist the victims, driving them to Ng Teng Fong Hospital. Tan's husband accompanied the victims in the minibus while she drove to the hospital separately. One victim, a 48-year-old woman, suffered rib fractures and minor injuries to her chest and right knee, and was given 14 days of hospitalisation leave. 2 years’ probation for teen who bit cop and also caused spinal cord injury
SINGAPORE - A youth who left a policeman with a spinal cord injury and superficial bite wounds was on Tuesday (Jan 5) sentenced to two years' probation. As part of his probation, the 17-year-old drug offender has to remain indoors from 10pm to 6am every day and perform 80 hours of community service. He also has to undergo regular urine tests. The teenager cannot be named as those under 18 are covered under the Children and Young Persons Act. The offender had pleaded guilty in a district court on Nov 19 last year to one count each of causing grievous hurt to a public servant and methamphetamine consumption. The victim - a full-time national serviceman - and his colleague were conducting foot patrol at Block 90 Redhill Close at around 2pm on Aug 5 last year when they entered a lift on the seventh storey, which was occupied by the offender and his cousin.
