BlackRock, Goldman opt for China over more pricey India stocks

(Bloomberg) In a change of tone over the world's two biggest emerging markets, global investors overseeing billions of dollars are slowly starting to favour China over India - reversing a year-long trend that has pushed stocks in opposite directions. BlackRock has upgraded Chinese stocks as policy hurdles ease, saying "the time to position in China is now", while trimming its exposure to Indian equities. Goldman Sachs Group and Nomura Holdings both downgraded Indian stocks recently, with the former upgrading offshore Chinese equities at the same time. Valuations are the key rationale as losses triggered by Beijing's wide-ranging regulatory crackdown have made Chinese equities relatively inexpensive while shares in the South Asian nation appear expensive after a world-beating rally. "There is more opportunity to allocate to China as the performance disparity between the two countries is one of the largest on record," said New York-based portfolio manager Tom Masi of GW&K Investment Management, who recently trimmed his India positions. The pivot towards China comes amid growing optimism that its battered equities have factored in the worst of Beijing's rein-tightening that at its mos...

US Chamber sees risk of faltering Indian economy due to Covid-19 spike

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - The US Chamber of Commerce on Monday (April 26) warned that the Indian economy - the world's sixth largest - could falter as a result of a record spike in coronavirus cases, creating a drag for the global economy. Myron Brilliant, executive vice president of the Chamber, the biggest US business lobby, said the risk of spillover effects was high given that many US companies employ millions of Indian workers to run their back-office operations. "We expect that this could get worse before it gets better," Mr Brilliant told Reuters, citing a "real risk" the Indian economy would falter. "There's a big concern about the drag on the (US) economy by a devastating, spreading virus in India." For now, he said the focus was on helping the Indian people. The Chamber and CEOs from 40 firms on Monday launched a public-private task force to provide India with urgently needed medical supplies, oxygen and other assistance, and unveiled a new portal where US firms can offer in-kind donations. The partnership also includes the US-India Business Council, the Business Roundtable and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, the Chamber said. Chamber officials and the CEOs met wit...

Combating the COVID-19 Remains Top Priority and Biggest Challenge for the Indian Government in 2021

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Indian government has not been able to contain the situation and cumulative total of confirmed cases crossed a ten million threshold, there are nearly 160,000 confirmed cases at present, while cumulative number of deaths broke the 150,000 mark, and the number of patients is still climbing on a daily basis. Yet, even with such dire circumstances at home, the Modi administration does not appear to have taken any emergency measures, instead concentrating attention on external conflicts. Since August 2020, there have been countless reports of rampant infections among Indian air, land and maritime freight crews, some of which were sent back to India, while others are quarantined locally. There was even an Indian airline that was ordered to suspend all operation due to suspicion of fabricating negative COVID-19 test result. To a certain extent, the Indian government's incapacity to suppress the coronavirus on its soil is inevitably turning the country into a hot bed for the virus to both spread among its people and elsewhere across the globe. Ever since Narendra Modi took office as Premier of India, he has endeavored to expand India's glob...
