Bank Indonesia looking at tightening policy from late next year

JAKARTA (BLOOMBERG) - Bank Indonesia could begin tightening monetary policy next year, including potential moves on interest rates, if the economic recovery remains on track and policy makers see signs of inflation. The bank's exit strategy is to gradually reduce liquidity in the financial system "and then later, the end of next year, maybe some interest-rate action," Governor Perry Warjiyo told Bloomberg Television's Haslinda Amin on Friday. "But this is very uncertain." Bank Indonesia has kept its benchmark interest rate at a record low 3.50 per cent since February as a spike in Covid-19 cases overwhelms hospitals and oxygen supplies. The economy is still expected to expand 4.1 per cent-5.1 per cent this year as early indicators, such as in the payment system, show no "significant decline" so far, even as the central bank is assessing the outlook, Warjiyo said. Growth is seen hitting 6.3 per cent and 5.5 per cent in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, he added. The government recently downgraded its own forecast for the economy to 3.7 per cent-4.5 per cent growth this year, from 4.5 per cent-5.3 per cent previously after it reinstated stringent movement curbs over large ...

"I assured him that Singapore will do our utmost, and work together to overcome this pandemic together," said Mr Teo. Sunday's shipment of oxygen to Indonesia follows the dispatch of two planeloads of medical supplies to Indonesia from Singapore. These included ventilators, masks, gloves and gowns. The Singapore government dispatched the emergency oxygen supplies and equipment in response to Indonesia's request, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Sunday. "As Indonesia’s close neighbour and partner, Singapore will continue to work in clo...

Top battery makers in talks over US$20b Indonesia electric vehicle plans

JAKARTA (BLOOMBERG) - Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and LG Chem, two of the world's top producers of batteries for electric vehicles (EV), have signalled they may join projects that could see US$20 billion (S$27.2 billion) more invested in supply chains in Indonesia, according to the country's government. The firms signed separate heads of agreement with Aneka Tambang last month aimed at manufacturing higher value products for batteries from the state-owned miner's nickel output, said Septian Hario Seto, deputy for investment coordination and mining at the coordinating ministry for maritime affairs and investments. It's a strategy that would involve development of new capacity for metals processing to battery pack assembly, according to Seto. "This is a race on technology," he said in an interview. "LG Chem and CATL are two front-runners in lithium battery technology." Indonesia holds almost a quarter of global reserves of nickel, a key metal for electric cars, and is seeking to use that advantage, along with cheap power prices and low-cost manufacturing, to build a domestic battery industry. LG Chem and Aneka Tambang have agreed to explore joint venture options, though th...
