Government Wakes up to Blockchain & Cryptocurrency

Washington, D.C., Sep 13, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - In August, the US Senate approved the $1 Trillion Infrastructure Bill, as part of the $3.5 Trillion Budget Bill. Language in this bill suggests that $28 Billion in funding will come from enforcing tax-reporting requirements on cryptocurrency brokers. A cryptocurrency broker is anyone who buys or sells cryptocurrency. Just months earlier, Nasdaq stated that 17% of the US population, or roughly 46 million Americans, now own cryptocurrency. Further, research from The Ascent, a Motley Fool service, predicts that over 20% of Americans who have never before owned cryptocurrency, are expected to buy crypto in the next year. This would add another 50 million Americans to the team of crypto "brokers" tasked with funding the Infrastructure Bill. Are the fiat and crypto sides being pitted against each other? As capital flight shrinks the power of the US dollar, is Congress responding by taxing the 'culprit'? This fall, the Government Blockchain Association (GBA) (www.gbaglobal.org) has partnered with a coalition of blockchain associations to present Blockchain & Infrastructure, a two-day hybrid event coupling an education...

SINGAPORE - More than 600 electric vehicle (EV) chargers will be installed at some 200 public carparks in HDB estates, industrial estates and the Central Business District over the next 12 months. The first of these chargers are expected to be installed by the end of this year. By the third quarter of next year, there will be 210 charging points in the central region, 50 in the north, 100 in the north-east, 120 in the east and 140 in the west. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Friday (Sept 3) that a consortium comprising ComfortDelGro Engineering and Engie South East Asia has been awarded a tender to set up EV charging points in selected carparks in the central, east and west regions. Another consortium comprising Primech A&P, Charge+, Sunseap Group and Oyika has been awarded a tender to install the charging infrastructure in carparks in the north and north-east regions. The tenders, which form a pilot tender put out in November last year, are the first steps towards a national target of 40,000 charging points in public carparks by 2030. URA and LTA said they wanted to ensure that the pilot tender for the charging points was awar...

Dow, S&P 500 end at records as US infrastructure Bill advances

NEW YORK (AFP) - The Dow and S&P 500 ended at fresh records on Tuesday (Aug 10) as industrial companies and commodities producers advanced following Senate passage of a US$1.2 trillion (S$1.6 trillion) infrastructure package. In a victory for President Joe Biden, the Senate approved the sweeping package in a bipartisan vote. The measure now faces a make-or-break vote in the House of Representatives in the coming weeks, where its future is less certain as divisions have sprung up in the Democratic majority. But investors took bets on Tuesday on companies expected to garner a share of the business from the push to upgrade America's roads, bridges and broadband. This includes industrial giant Caterpillar as well as metals producers US Steel and Alcoa. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5 per cent to 35,264.67, overtaking a record from last Friday by 55 points. The broad-based S&P 500 increased 0.1 per cent to 4,436.75, edging out the prior record by less than a point, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 0.5 per cent to 14,788.09. Passage of the infrastructure Bill helped offset worries about the Delta variant of Covid-19, which has begun to strain hospital capaci...

Opportunities for public-private tie-ups in sustainable infrastructure development despite Covid-19: Indranee Rajah

SINGAPORE - Delivering quality and sustainable infrastructure has been made more challenging with the pandemic, and will be even more complex due to climate change and rapid urbanisation. But there are opportunities for partnerships and co-creation among governments, multilateral development banks and private sector, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Indranee Rajah. She was delivering a keynote address at the Asia Infrastructure Forum on Wednesday (June 23) at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Held in a hybrid format this year due to Covid-19, the event, jointly organised by the Ministry of Finance, Enterprise Singapore, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Infrastructure Asia, drew more than 2,000 participants. Ms Indranee, who is also Second Minister for Finance and National Development, said Covid-19 has led to an almost 4.5 per cent drop in global economic growth. In Asean last year, all countries experienced an average fiscal deficit of 7.6 per cent of gross domestic product. "Asian governments and multilateral development banks have identified infrastructure as an important means of achieving economic recovery through increased access to financial f...

Resilient and sustainable infrastructure is also about reducing inequality: Indranee Rajah

SINGAPORE - Cities need to build infrastructure not only to withstand climate change and pandemics, but also to reduce inequality and strengthen society's resilience, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Indranee Rajah. This is because it is the more vulnerable who often bear the brunt of disruptions and shocks, she said. Infrastructure investments are also critical to providing basic needs, and are a key driver of economic recovery and long-term growth. She was speaking at the World Cities Summit on Monday (June 21) on the topic, "Investing in a sustainable and equitable recovery". The biennial summit, held virtually this year because of Covid-19, brings together government leaders and industry to address urban challenges and share solutions. It ends on Wednesday. Ms Indranee, who is also Second Minister for Finance and National Development, said that around the world, those hardest hit by Covid-19 live in cramped conditions with inadequate sanitation, which worsened the spread of the virus. Urban infrastructure and systems such as public transport, healthcare, parks and recreational amenities, as well as digital and Internet access, are examples of basic infrastructure th...

S&P 500 edges to record as Fed eyes inflation risk

NEW YORK (AFP) - The S&P 500 edged to a record on Wednesday (April 7) while the Nasdaq dipped as US President Joe Biden again called for infrastructure investment and Federal Reserve minutes showed inflation fears have risen somewhat. US equities avoided major swings throughout the session as Biden cast his proposed US$2 trillion (S$2.7 trillion) infrastructure plan as a make-or-break moment for ensuring US supremacy on the world stage against a rising China. The president's remarks came as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen campaigned for a global minimum corporate tax that would align other major economies with the Biden's administration plan to increase business taxes to finance the public works package, which has drawn opposition from congressional Republicans. Meanwhile, Fed minutes showed most policy makers viewed inflation as stable, even as "several" central bankers worried that strong demand "could push up price inflation more than anticipated." The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.1 per cent to 33,466.26. The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.2 per cent at 4,079.95 to narrowly overtake Monday's record, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 0.1 per cent to 13,68...

Nasdaq rallies as Biden unveils infrastructure plan

NEW YORK (AFP) - Tech shares rallied on Wednesday (March 31) to conclude the first quarter on a positive note as markets digested early details of US President Joe Biden's infrastructure plan. Large technology companies including Apple and Facebook scored big increases, reversing some of the weakness in the recent period as investors have steered funds to airlines, oil companies and other sectors expected to prosper in a post-coronavirus economy. "Now that the selling is done for all these companies, it makes sense that (tech shares) rally," said Chris Low of FHN Financial. The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.5 per cent to 13,246.87. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.3 per cent to 32,981.5, ending the quarter with a 7.8 per cent gain, while the broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.4 per cent to 3,972.89, narrowly missing a record. Data from payroll services firm ADP showed private US employment jumped by 517,000 in March, slightly less than economists had expected but much better than the 176,000 gain in February and a welcome rebound after several tepid results in the pandemic recovery. Meanwhile, investors were assessing early reports on Biden's US$2 trillion (S$2.7 trill...
