S’porean ex-religious teacher detained under ISA for terrorism-related offences

SINGAPORE - A 34-year-old Singaporean housewife and former religious teacher has been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for planning to travel to Syria to take up armed violence for terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The Internal Security Department (ISD) on Wednesday (June 9) said Ruqayyah Ramli was radicalised by her husband, who was earlier arrested for similar offences. She had failed to respond to religious counselling after his arrest, and refused to turn away from her radical path. Ruqayyah, who was detained in April, had previously been issued a restriction order (RO) under the ISA in August last year, after her husband was detained under the Act. "Since being placed on RO however, there has been an escalation in Ruqayyah's radical behaviour and involvement in activities prejudicial to Singapore's security," said the ISD. "Ruqayyah has refused to make any genuine effort to participate in the rehabilitation programme, and remains entrenched in her radical beliefs. She continues to support ISIS' violent actions and believes in the use of violence against the perceived enemies of Islam." Under the restriction order, a person is not allowed to ...

MHA rejects TOC’s application to cancel Pofma order over police bullying claims

SINGAPORE - An application by The Online Citizen Asia (TOC) to cancel a correction direction issued to it over a video it had posted on its online platforms has been rejected by Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam. The video posted on May 18 contained falsehoods alleging that police officers "had taunted and reprimanded an elderly woman for not wearing a mask", said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday (May 28). The video was originally shared by Instagram user @nichology. On May 19, the police had issued a clarification on the incident. Body-worn camera footage was also later released to show a police officer buying the elderly woman a packet of food from a nearby stall and not taunting or reprimanding her. On May 21, Mr Shanmugam instructed the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma) Office to issue a direction to TOC, requiring it to post a correction notice in a new post on its Facebook page. This was also required of @nichology, which has complied with the correction order on Instagram, as well as Singapore Uncensored, which appears to have deleted the original post but has not posted a clarification. TOC was required to state in the new post that ...

Arrest warrant out for man who allegedly exposed himself in NUS library

SINGAPORE - A warrant of arrest is out for a man accused of exposing his private parts and sexually stimulating himself in front of a woman at the science library of the National University of Singapore (NUS) on April 10 last year. Xiong Jiawei, now 28, was an NUS student when he allegedly committed the offence. The Singaporean was charged last year with insulting a woman's modesty. He could have been jailed for up to a year and fined if convicted of this offence. The charge has since been reduced to that of committing an obscene act in public, for which he can be jailed for up to three months and fined if convicted. The arrest warrant was issued on Oct 26 this year. It was not stated on the State Courts portal why the warrant was issued then. A review of the matter took place in chambers at the State Courts on Monday (Dec 7). Another review has been scheduled for June 7 next year as Xiong is on the run. In an earlier statement, the university said disciplinary sanctions, including suspension of candidature for two semesters and mandatory assessment by a psychiatrist, as well as mandatory counselling, had been imposed on Xiong. An NUS spokesman said: "The university takes a serious...

Singapore Army soldiers equipped with new helmet, better fitting load-bearing systems

SINGAPORE - Soldiers in the Singapore Army are now issued with improved helmets and better fitting loading-bearing systems, comprising a vest and belt, to carry their military gear. Since January this year, full-time national servicemen (NSFs) in combat units such as commando, guards, and infantry have been issued with an enhanced version of a load-bearing system (LBS) that is more customisable, ergonomic, and with better heat dissipation, with the aim of boosting soldiers' combat effectiveness. For the first time, two variants of the LBS - enhanced and standard - were developed to replace the previous integrated load-bearing vest, which has been in use since 2009. The standard version will be given to all other NSFs, such as those in combat support or combat service support vocations, from next year. The announcement comes as the army marks its 55th anniversary this month. It was established with the passing of the Singapore Army Bill in Parliament in December 1965. Reporters were shown the new helmet and LBS at Selarang Camp in Loyang recently. The LBS allows soldiers to carry military gear that they need when training outfield, such as their water bottle, ammunition or communica...
