Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Teo said the offender moved to Singapore in March last year to live with his older sister and the victim. He later molested the child on two occasions while she was sitting on his lap. The youth, the victim and her mother were at a friend's home on June 27 last year when the mother saw her daughter sitting on the offender's lap, watching an anime show on his tablet. New lawyer for bus drivers tells court they are continuing with lawsuit against SBS Transit

SINGAPORE - Lawyer Lim Tean, who has taken over the case of 13 bus drivers suing SBS Transit over overtime pay, told the High Court on Monday (Nov 29) that his clients intend to continue with the legal action. This comes a week after a dramatic hearing last Monday on what was to be the first day of trial, when the drivers' former lawyer, Mr M. Ravi, accused Justice Audrey Lim of being biased and asked her to recuse herself. Mr Ravi also called the transport operator's lawyer, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, a "clown", and said that he and his client, Mr Chua Qwong Meng, would be "discharging" themselves. Mr Chua, 62, is the lead plaintiff, whose suit is being heard as a test case. The court's decision and findings will be binding on the others. He issued a statement last Tuesday, saying that the drivers were "very embarrassed" by Mr Ravi's behaviour and have discharged him as their lawyer. On Monday, Mr Lim told Justice Lim: "It was never Mr Chua's intention to apply for your honour to recuse yourself. What happened last Monday struck Mr Chua like a thunderbolt." Mr Lim said he was contacted last Wednesday and agreed to represent Mr Chua. He confirmed that Mr Chua intended to contin...

Evergrande chief’s luxury assets in focus as his company scrambles to pay debts

HONG KONG (REUTERS) - As developer China Evergrande Group scrambles to meet its debt obligations, its founder is freeing up funds from luxury assets including art, calligraphy and two high-end homes, according to filings and a source. The Chinese authorities have told Evergrande chairman Hui Ka Yan, 63, to use some of his personal wealth to help pay bondholders, two separate people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters last month. Evergrande's troubles in meeting bond repayments have rattled markets and left many of its investors, creditors and suppliers in financial chaos. Mr Guo Hui, whose cleaning business is owed more than 18 million yuan (S$3.8 million) by Evergrande, had to sell his Porsche Cayenne and an apartment to raise cash and pay debts. "He should be selling his things," Mr Guo told Reuters. "He had no choice once the authorities made him." Mr Hui pledged one of his Hong Kong mansions of around 5,000 sq ft in The Peak, Hong Kong's most prestigious residential enclave, for a loan from China Construction Bank last month, according to a filing with Hong Kong's Land Registry. Around HK$300 million (S$52 million) was raised to repay an overdue Evergrande bond, local med...
