Smooth entry to S’pore malls on first day of mandatory vaccination status checks

SINGAPORE - Entry to shopping malls was smooth on Wednesday (Oct 20), the first day that rules barring unvaccinated individuals from entering malls came into effect, following a one-week grace period. Malls had been allowed a week to roll out vaccination-differentiated safe management measures, where people's vaccination status will be checked before entry. Just before noon at Parkway Parade, there were up to 15 people waiting to enter the mall at any one time, with staff conducting meticulous checks at entry points. Despite that, the queue moved quickly. Queues were shorter at other malls like Nex, AMK Hub and Kallang Wave Mall, but fast moving as well. Nex has introduced fast-entry lanes for tenants and delivery riders picking up food orders at two entrances in Basement 2, so that these individuals can check in quickly. The lanes were introduced on Oct 13 - the first day of the grace period. A Nex spokesman said: "This will also lessen any possible congestion at the entrances designated for shoppers to use." He added that checking in via SafeEntry will continue to be mandatory at the mall's fast lanes. Along with signs to inform shoppers of the measures, the mall has deployed add...

Ikea’s malls arm branches out into housing with new centre in China

STOCKHOLM (REUTERS) - Ikea's shopping malls business, one of the world's biggest, has kicked off the sales process for some 500 flats at its first ever mixed-use retail and residential development, in Changsha in southern China. Ms Cindy Andersen, managing director at Ingka Centres since February, said in an interview she expected flat buyers to start moving in in March next year, after the adjacent mall opened last month following delays due to the pandemic. Ingka Centres has 45 malls, or "meeting places" as it calls them following a strategy tweak a few years ago, anchored by Ikea furniture stores across Europe, Russia and China - in China under the brand Livat. The company has shifted towards more entertainment and social spaces in its developments as consumers, in China in particular, increasingly shop online while visiting malls more for food or movies. Ms Andersen told Reuters a third of tenants at the Livat Changsha mall were retailers currently. With housing, it is testing yet another income leg, banking on the rapid urbanisation in China. Livat Changsha's residential building, besides the flats, also sport common living and work spaces designed and decorated in co-operatio...

Orchard Road malls keeping it simple for Christmas; shoppers find decor subtle but brilliant

SINGAPORE - Orchard Road malls are keeping it simple for Christmas, with pared-down decorations to mark the festive season. This year's light-up, which began last Friday (Nov 13), is a more subdued affair with malls cutting spending amid the slide in retail sales and the Covid-19 pandemic. Wisma Atria has outlaid 19 per cent less on Christmas decorations compared with last year, Tanglin Mall said it has spent "slightly less", while Mandarin Gallery's budget has been "moderated downward". Design and build company Dezign Format, which dressed up five Orchard Road malls this year, said decoration budgets have been "affected across the board". Malls such as Far East Plaza are reusing some decorations from last year, sprucing them up where necessary. Retail sales have taken a beating this year, with the latest government figures showing that for eight months since February, monthly retail sales excluding motor vehicles were down from a year ago. Sales excluding motor vehicles fell 12.7 per cent in September compared with the same month last year. Mr Amos Tan, a senior lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic's School of Business, said malls may be erring on the side of caution after retail sta...
