US to see ‘several more months’ of high inflation, Yellen says

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Inflation will remain high in the United States for months to come but eventually retreat, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday (July 15). The comments come after Labour Department data earlier this week showed record-setting increases in the consumer and wholesale prices, again fanning the debate over whether government stimulus and the Federal Reserve's easy money policies are allowing the US economy to run too hot as it bounces back from the Covid-19 pandemic. "I think we will have several more months of rapid inflation, so I'm not saying that this is a one month phenomenon," Dr Yellen said during an interview on CNBC. However, she predicted price increases will reach "normal levels" over the medium term. "It is important that we monitor it carefully, but I believe fundamentally, that this is something that will settle down," she said. The producer price index increased 7.3 per cent, not seasonally adjusted, for the 12 months ended in June, its largest-ever yearly increase since the Labour Department began tracking it more than a decade ago, it announced on Wednesday. The day before, the department reported the consumer price index climbed by an un...

Oil slides 2% on oversupply fears after Opec+ wrangles an agreement

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Oil prices dropped more than 2 per cent on Wednesday (July 14) after major global oil producers came to a compromise about supply and after United States data showed demand slacked off a bit in the most recent week. Crude prices have surged to highs not seen in nearly three years, but have been choppy lately on worries about a pickup in supply. Brent crude settled down US$1.73 a barrel, or 2.26 per cent, at US$74.76 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate was off by US$2.12, or 2.82 per cent, at US$73.13 a barrel. Brent crude's premium to West Texas Intermediate futures widened to the most since July 6, according to Refinitiv Eikon data. The US benchmark fell more preciptously due to demand concerns. Oil initially dropped after Reuters reported Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates reached a compromise that should unlock an Opec+ deal to boost global oil supplies as the world recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. The benchmarks fell more after US government data showed implied gasoline demand declining considerably last week. While the US Energy Information Administration said crude stockpiles declined more than expected, in their eighth consecutive draw, the d...

South Korea adds more jobs before new Covid-19 outbreaks force Seoul curbs

SEOUL (BLOOMBERG) - South Korea added jobs for a fourth straight month in June, as a recovering economy kept the momentum alive in employment before new Covid-19 outbreaks triggered Seoul's toughest restrictions yet. Employment rose by 582,000 from a year earlier, the statistics office said Wednesday (July 14). The jobless rate inched down to 3.7 per cent, compared with the median estimate of 3.8 per cent by economists. The jobs recovery faces another setback, though, as authorities ramp up restrictions from this week to curb a spike in infections. Korea's economy has powered ahead this year on the back of strong exports and investment, but the prospect of a prolonged outbreak is now a key risk to the outlook, as the country muddles through a pandemic that causes more infections as activity increases. The latest rules, which ban gatherings of three or more people after 6pm and order some entertainment venues to close, are a blow to a service sector that was emerging from a yearlong slump. A government budget proposal now under consideration would offer some support to small business owners who have borne the brunt of the virus restrictions. The outlook for jobs will likely feature ...

Asia’s wealthy heirs are backing women in business

JAKARTA (BLOOMBERG) - When Grace Tahir's daughter turned 14, they sat down to talk careers. As a family linked to two Indonesian billionaire patriarchs, a life of leisure has always been an option for the women in the family - but the teenager said she wanted to work, like her mother. That sparked a renewed determination in Ms Tahir to help advance women, pushing her to pour more funding into investments with a female focus. "I would hate to see in 10 or 20 years' time, when they get into the workforce, them facing the same situation I see myself in right now where a lot of things are very male-dominated," 44-year-old Ms Tahir, who has founded start-ups and is now a director at her family's Mayapada Hospital group, said of her three daughters. Ms Tahir's interest in so-called gender lens investing is part of a growing trend among Asia's rich families, as young generations inheriting wealth put their money to work in more novel ways that may also have positive impact. It helps that the research is beginning to back them up, with a number of studies now suggesting that a focus on gender-equal companies can help portfolio managers outperform. The growth of this practice is particularl...

Seniors less receptive to telemedicine and uncomfortable with AI interpreting medical results: S’pore survey

SINGAPORE - When security officer Joseph Mathew was asked by Ng Teng Fong General Hospital last year to consult his specialist about his varicose veins over a video call, he declined, preferring instead to keep his appointment at the hospital. "Suddenly switching to telemedicine, videoconference and Zoom is very new to me, and I'm not ready for it," said Mr Mathew. Although the 59-year-old has attended meetings on Zoom, he finds it tough. "There are certain things the doctor has to examine in person... And I'm not very tech-savvy," he added. He is not the only one who feels that way. A survey by the Singapore Eye Research Institute (Seri) during the circuit breaker last year found that about 55 per cent of 520 people aged 60 and above were unlikely to use digital medical services if the Covid-19 pandemic continues. Although half the respondents agreed that telemedicine would be helpful in reducing non-essential contact in clinics and hospitals, 77 per cent of them said they were uncomfortable with artificial intelligence (AI) interpreting their medical results. But the study, which was conducted during the circuit breaker when telemedicine services became more common, found that se...

S&P 500 ends at record, up more than 8% in 2nd quarter

NEW YORK (AFP) - The S&P 500 finished with another record on Wednesday (June 30), concluding a winning quarter as investors weigh optimism over the reopening economy against worries over the latest Covid-19 trends. The broad-based index climbed 0.1 per cent to 4,297.50, a fifth straight record close that lifted its overall gain for the quarter to more than 8 per cent. And it is up more than 14 per cent for the first half of 2021. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.6 per cent to end at 34,502.51, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index retreated from Tuesday's record, falling 0.2 per cent to 14,503.95. The latest records have come on the heels of mostly solid economic data in recent weeks that show how widespread availability of coronavirus vaccines has transformed the global outlook compared with a year ago. Private US firms added 692,000 jobs in June, according to payroll services firm ADP. The figures were a big drop from May, but well above economists' expectations and bode well for the key government employment report Friday. Other recent reports have shown strong consumer confidence and rising home prices, while corporate earnings have also won cheers, with large ban...

NUS holds first-ever online graduation ceremony for 186 students

SINGAPORE - A total of 186 students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) graduated in a virtual ceremony on Saturday morning (June 26). This is the first time NUS has held a graduation ceremony in this manner. Saturday's was the first among 60 online ceremonies that will see more than 23,500 students from the classes of 2020 and 2021 graduating. Those from the class of 2020 had their graduation ceremonies postponed to this year. President Halimah Yacob, who is also NUS chancellor, gave a speech to the graduating students, in which she noted that the Covid-19 pandemic had upended Singaporeans' way of life and altered the face of an already disruptive future. "It is a reminder that sometimes, even the best-laid plans can be overturned by events that are not within our control," she said. Addressing 154 graduates from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and 32 graduates from the Master of Science in Industry 4.0 programme offered by the NUS School of Continuing and Lifelong Education, Madam Halimah encouraged them to hold steadfast to values of respect, integrity, innovation, excellence and resilience during these challenging times. 17 organisations, 114 people get awards from Commercial Affairs Department for thwarting scams

SINGAPORE - The Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) handed out awards to more than 100 people who helped thwart 83 cases of scams last year. The 114 people, from various organisations, were presented with Community Partnership Awards on Thursday (June 24) to recognise their contributions that led to the recovery of more than $3.2 million last year that would have otherwise been lost to scammers. The CAD said most of the cases involved Internet love scams. It added that it was because of the swift intervention by these individuals that the department was able to intercept the scams. The awards were also given to 17 organisations, including banks, remittance agencies and other businesses, which have been committed to detecting and preventing scams. The award recipients included DBS Bank, UOB and Hako Technology, which operates cryptocurrency platform Coinhako. In his speech at the ceremony held virtually on Thursday morning, CAD director David Chew noted that scams increased by more than 65 per cent last year as compared with 2019. He added that the amounts lost to scammers had also jumped from $170 million in 2019 to $268 million last year. He said there have been several initiative...
