Spotify to add 85 new markets with 1 billion people

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Spotify Technology is introducing its audio service in 85 markets across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean in coming days, expanding the company's potential market by some one billion people. The steps announced on Monday (Feb 22) will nearly double Spotify's geographic footprint and add regions where streaming music is in its infancy. The company already operates in 93 countries or territories. Spotify is seeking to build on its head start as the leading audio service in the West to become the dominant player globally. While the company already has more than 345 million users, fewer than 20% come from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, where most of the world's people live. The Stockholm-based company has been slower to expand globally than Netflix or Google's YouTube, partly because of the complexity of securing music rights. But its timing coincides with growing potential in markets across Africa and Asia. Where the music industry was once US-centric, many of the most popular acts in the world right now hail from India, Nigeria, South Korea and Latin America. "For the first time ever we have the technology to connect the world through audio," chief executive o...

Bitcoin hits new high of $1.3 trillion in market value

Bitcoin's market value reached US$1 trillion (S$1.32 trillion) for the first time, a surge that's helping cryptocurrency returns far outstrip the performance of more traditional assets like stocks and gold. The largest digital asset has added more than US$450 billion of value this year to more than US$1 trillion, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. The Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, which includes bitcoin and four other coins, has more than doubled. Bitcoin hit another fresh high on Saturday after its market capitalisation went above US$1 trillion on Friday. It rose to a record US$57,553, taking its weekly gain to around 20 per cent. Speculators, corporate treasurers and institutional investors are thought to have stoked bitcoin's volatile ascent. Crypto believers are duelling with sceptics for the dominant narrative around the climb: The former see an asset being embraced for its ability to hedge risks such as inflation, while the latter sense a precarious mania riding atop waves of monetary and fiscal stimulus. At the same time, the argument has been made that assigning a market capitalisation is not an accurate representation since bitcoin isn't a company or even an asset. Sceptic...

Former UOB V-P accused of multiple offences including misappropriating more than $5m

SINGAPORE - The former vice-president of UOB has been hauled to a district court after he allegedly misappropriated cash totalling more than $5.3 million while he was holding the position. Ling Shek Lun, now 65, is accused of misappropriating a total of nearly £2.9 million (S$5.4 million) and US$14,010 (S$18,600) on multiple occasions between 2004 and 2014. Court documents do not disclose the exact source of the monies. The Singaporean is also accused of transferring more than £1.8 million of the benefits of his alleged criminal conduct to one Yong Ai Khim, whose details were not revealed in court documents. Ling, who was charged in court on Feb 10, currently faces two cheating charges, 11 counts of criminal breach of trust, 28 counts of forgery for the purpose of cheating, 54 counts of forgery and 47 counts of dealing the benefits of his alleged criminal activities. He is said to have committed these offences between 2003 and 2015. Oil trader GP Global Apac seeks debt moratorium in Singapore

SINGAPORE (REUTERS) - Oil trader GP Global Apac has applied to the Singapore High Court for a six-month debt moratorium as its parent company seeks to restructure more than US$1 billion (S$1.32 billion) in debt, according to a company director, lawyers and a court document. The parent, GP Global - a major global oil trader and ship fuel supplier based in the United Arab Emirates - said in July it would restructure the group's debt by selling assets after lenders scaled back credit. GP Apac, which has missed loan payments in recent months, joins a string of defaults among Asian oil trading companies - including Singapore's Hin Leong Trading, one of Asia's biggest bunker fuel suppliers - in the wake of last year's pandemic-driven crash in oil prices. The parent company, owned by India's Goel family, said last year it had uncovered fraud within the company and filed criminal complaints against some of its employees, while it has faced several lawsuits and ship seizures by creditors. The Singapore trader's restructuring strategy includes "standstill agreements" with creditors that let it sell assets without the threat of creditors independently taking action against the firm. "The mora...

Infected SIA stewardess did not serve passengers on UAE flight; only outside contact was with cleaners during Dubai stopover

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Airlines (SIA) stewardess who tested positive for Covid-19 after a turnaround flight to the United Arab Emirates last month did not serve any passengers on both legs of the trip. But the 41-year-old Singaporean had come into contact with some cleaners during the stopover at Dubai International Airport, said Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung, who gave more details of her case on Thursday (Feb 11). The stewardess on the Jan 30 flight was serving business class, which had no passengers, he told reporters at an event to mark the first SIA flight manned by fully vaccinated crew. She did not disembark from the plane, as there was no layover, and was a passenger for the return leg. She had sat with other crew members at the back of the plane in their own area, which had a dedicated toilet. "The rest of the crew who sat with her, they are okay. Only she was infected," Mr Ong said, adding that the authorities are still investigating. The Health Ministry reiterated on Tuesday that it takes a few weeks for individuals to build up immunity against Covid-19 after completing vaccination, and it is possible to get infected just before or after inoculation. The stewardess, w...

DBS rolls out support measures for small business owners

Micro and small enterprises prioritise protecting employees’ livelihoods but many need more support, according to a survey by DBS Bank. So it has rolled out new measures to help these business owners stay afloat. About six in 10 micro and small enterprises polled in the DBS SME Pulse Check Survey cited responsibility for protecting employee livelihoods as the main motivation for sustaining their businesses. More than half have tapped personal savings and assets to do so. Also, four in 10 respondents said their mental and physical well-being had taken a blow. The survey, done at the start of the year, polled over 200 enterprises across various industries. Ms Joyce Tee, group head of SME banking at DBS, said: “With the economic situation and road ahead still uncertain, business owners must be ready for a long fight, and will need to take care of themselves to avoid burning out.” DBS will extend complimentary access to an app that helps manage workplace stress, as well as webinars giving tips for mental well-being. It also plans to run webinars on financial planning strategies and tools, such as DBS NAV Planner, the bank’s digital retirement financial planning solution. Businesses are...

22 people charged with breaching SHN in 2020

SINGAPORE - Twenty-two people were charged with breaching stay-home notice (SHN) requirements last year, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Monday (Feb 8). They included a 34-year-old Singaporean man who breached his 14-day SHN in March last year after returning from Myanmar to eat bak kut teh, as well as a former nurse who left her residence during her SHN period to buy bubble tea. She later tested positive for Covid-19. In its annual statistics report, the ICA said that more than 280,000 SHNs were issued in 2020. At the peak in April last year, the authority monitored more than 40,000 people placed on SHN. To help with its enforcement efforts, the ICA last August introduced electronic monitoring wristbands for people serving their SHN at non-dedicated facilities. More than 16,000 wristbands were issued last year. "This has allowed ICA to monitor this group of travellers in a more effective and efficient manner, thereby helping to reduce the risk to the community should they breach their SHN," said the authority. The ICA also enhanced online services to cater to the increased number of applications for short-term visit pass extensions, as many foreigners found...

Over 110,000 local jobseekers hired under Jobs Growth Incentive in September and October

SINGAPORE - More than 110,000 local jobseekers were hired under a government scheme that subsidises wages in the first two months of its implementation. This was double the number of workers that were hired in the Jobs Growth Incentive scheme's inaugural month in September alone, according to preliminary estimates. The workers were hired by around 26,000 firms, with about half of them aged 40 and above, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Monday (Feb 8). The Jobs Growth Incentive scheme aims to spur firms to hire more locals, with $1 billion set aside to provide wage support for these workers. Firms that hire local workers from September last year to February this year will receive a subsidy of 25 per cent of the first $5,000 of workers' gross monthly salaries for up to one year. The co-payment goes up to 50 per cent for workers aged 40 and above. In total, eligible firms can receive up to $15,000 for each local hire aged below 40, and $30,000 for each local hire aged 40 and above. MOM noted that the top hiring sectors included food services, wholesale trade, professional services, retail and construction. In October alone, more than 11,000 new employers became eligible for the ...
