How to Use News Releases as a Marketing Tool

HONG KONG – Surprisingly, 20% of NovationWire’s respondents advised they do not even use a press release as a part of their marketing strategy. As we have mentioned in the past, sending out a press release when Users have newsworthy information to share makes sense. The key word here is “newsworthy.” The information should be newsworthy and useful to journalists or customers’ general audience. It is important to note that when Users send out insignificant news on a regular basis, it will only alienate yourself and company from journalists. And just like the “boy who cried wolf,” people will not pay attention when they find that customers’ news is usually trivial, exaggerated or misleading–Users must be credible. What is customers’ typical preferred reach? In the pre-Internet world, unless Users were a big national company, the news Users wanted to announce would more than likely have been either local or hyperlocal news. Times have changed, and the Internet has opened opportunities for businesses to have customers reaching them from around the globe. In NovationWire’s survey, the majority of businesses distributing a news release on a newswire service selected ‘national’ as their c...

How Long Does It Take for Press Releases to Be Visible on Google

HONG KONG – There is a saying in the world of marketing that goes like this. “If an individual takes the time to call or contacts you with an inquiry regarding your product or service, a thousand people have also had the same thought. The other 999 just couldn’t be bothered to contact you and moved on to potentially another source”. Hence, we have had a couple of inquiries over the last couple of months about news showing up in Google search results. We first have to start with our disclaimer of NovationWire is a news distribution service that distributes your news to the media, journalists and editors. This process is in the hopes that your story will be further published. Once further published by a third party that has taken your information from your original press release, this is where the true value begins. We also need to mention that we are not affiliated with and do not have any control over-indexing with Google. We only mention this because we have had phone calls where people think this is the case. Search engine algorithms change. When the algorithms change, we are not on some special list of people that are privy to what changes took place. Nobody becomes notified of ...

Adding Images & Media Content to Your Press Release – No Images = No Story

HONG KONG – NovationWire has previously written articles about the importance of images within your press release; however, this time wanted to dive in a little deeper on the subject. Your news release may be the most incredible news release of the day. Still, let’s be realistic, people are busy, journalists are busy, and realistically, many people barely even read your headline. Having no image with your news release is the death sentence of your news. Let’s use Facebook as an example. How often do you find yourself scrolling down your feed only to stop at an image that has grabbed your interest? You are not the only one, and a Facebook feed is not much different than a journalist scrolling through hundreds of stories to stumble across one of interest because the image stood out. As we know, anyone can relate to a photograph, but what type of image would best be suited and get the attention of a viewer? These would be images that people can relate to. Your photos need to be part of the storytelling of your news. We frequently see photos of headshots of someone within a business. Perhaps they have been promoted to a new position or a new company. Having an image is better than not ...

S&P, Nasdaq end choppy session at records

NEW YORK (AFP) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished a choppy session at fresh records on Thursday (Nov 18), lifted by strength in large technology equities and mostly good earnings. Apple and Amazon were among the companies that enjoyed outsized gains, along with chip company Nvidia, which shot up more than 8 per cent following strong earnings. But analysts pointed to lingering worries about inflation and supply chain problems as drags on the trading session, which saw all three major indexes drift at times into the red. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the only one to end lower, dropping 0.2 per cent to 35,870.95. The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.3 per cent to finish at 4,704.54, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 0.5 per cent to 15,993.71 - both overtaking previous records set Nov 8. Among other companies reporting results, Macy's shares won 21.1 per cent and Kohl's jumped 10.7 per cent, while Dow-member Cisco Systems slumped 5.5 per cent. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, was the exception among large tech companies that mostly rallied, falling 0.6 per cent on news that a group of American states are probing allegations that Instagram supplied ...

Phony Walmart news release on Litecoin tie-up likely crypto pump-and-dump scheme

NEW YORK (NYTIMES) - The news release went out at 9.30am Eastern time on Monday (Sept 13), just as the US stock market opened. It claimed to be from Walmart and had some big news for the cryptocurrency industry: The nation's largest retailer would soon begin accepting payment in Litecoin, a digital currency. The announcement appeared real enough that several media outlets wrote it up. Even the Twitter account for the Litecoin Foundation, which promotes the use of the currency, touted the release in a post. The value of Litecoin jumped more than 30 per cent before Walmart put out a statement saying the news was false. The newest thing in finance had apparently fallen prey to one of the oldest investor hoaxes around - a classic pump-and-dump scheme. Someone issued a false news release, likely taking advantage of the general hoopla around cryptocurrency to stoke enthusiasm for Litecoin, which is far less popular than Bitcoin and other digital currencies. Litecoin's price jumped to about US$230 from around US$175 right after the news, then fell back and traded around US$180 after Walmart refuted the release. The perpetrators of the hoax most likely made money in that time. Securities l...

Govt ‘does not intend nor expect’ restructuring to affect relationship between MCI and SPH newsrooms: Iswaran

SINGAPORE - The relationship between the Government and newsrooms should not be affected even as Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) restructures its media business into a model that can receive state funding, said Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran. In a ministerial statement on Monday (May 10), he said the Government "does not intend nor expect" the transfer of SPH Media to a company limited by guarantee (CLG) to affect the relationship between his ministry and the SPH newsrooms. "The Government is mindful that our local news media must remain credible institutions that are trusted by Singaporeans, and that it remains the responsibility of the editors and journalists in SPH Media to report news and diverse opinions objectively, and from a Singaporean point of view," he told Parliament. The minister's statement follows Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) announcement last Thursday that it plans to restructure its media business into a not-for-profit entity that can seek public and private funding, to free it from shareholders' expectations and place it in a more sustainable financial position. The move has drawn concern and questions about whether the editorial integrit...

A newspaper’s strategies to stay profitable

(NYTIMES) - The Wall Street Journal is a rarity in 21st-century media: a newspaper that makes money. A lot of money. But at a time when the United States population is growing more racially diverse, older white men still make up the largest chunk of its readership, with retirees a close second. "The No. 1 reason we lose subscribers is they die," goes a joke shared by some Journal editors. Now a special innovation team and a group of nearly 300 newsroom employees are pushing for drastic changes at the paper, which has been part of Mr Rupert Murdoch's media empire since 2007. They say The Journal must move away from subjects of interest to established business leaders and widen its scope if it wants to succeed in the years to come. The Journal of the future, they say, must pay more attention to social media trends and cover racial disparities in healthcare, for example, as aggressively as it pursues corporate mergers. That argument has yet to convince executives in the top ranks of the company. The Journal got digital publishing right before anyone else. It was one of the few news organisations to charge readers for online access starting in 1996, during the days of dial-up Internet....

GE2020 reports shine at SPH Chinese media awards

On June 27 last year, Lianhe Zaobao correspondent Nam Yunzhou, 31, and chief videographer Lim Seong Teik, 55, were the only journalists at the People's Action Party headquarters in Bedok when newly introduced candidate Ivan Lim announced he was withdrawing from contesting the July 10 General Election. Mr Lim pulled out just days before Nomination Day, after allegations about his past conduct emerged online. For their perseverance in tracking Mr Lim, the duo won the Best Scoop award at the annual awards of Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Chinese Media Group (CMG), held online yesterday. Mr Nam said: "It's a tremendous privilege to have played a part in this story, and this accolade is also testament to the hard work and dedication the newsroom puts into presenting quality content to our readership." Correspondent Ng Wai Mun won the Best News Report award for her coverage of Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh apologising for not sending a Mandarin-speaking representative to a live TV debate in the lead-up to the election. "For many of our readers, this piece of news hit close to their hearts," said Ms Ng, 32, who added that many were curious about what the opposition party with younge...
