Where workers age fastest, robots take on more jobs: Study

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - It turns out robots are taking over jobs fastest around the world in places where their human counterparts are ageing the most rapidly. That is the conclusion of a new study that looked at demographic and industry-level data in 60 countries and found a powerful link between ageing workforces - defined as the ratio of workers aged 56 and older, compared with those aged 21 to 55 - and robot use, focusing in particular on industrial settings. The research showed age alone accounted for 35 per cent of the variation between countries in their adoption of robots, with those having older workers far more likely to adopt the machines. "Ageing is a huge part of the story" in robot adoption, said Dr Daron Acemoglu, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who conducted the study with Pascual Restrepo of Boston University. The research fits a longstanding trend of countries such as South Korea and Germany - which both have very rapidly aging workforces - also being among the world's fastest adopters of robots, based on the number of robots per human worker they deploy. "The US has a huge technological advantage in a bunch of areas - including software and...

Four vaccination centres to close down in end-September, but more clinics to offer jabs

SINGAPORE - Four vaccination centres will be closing down at the end of this month (September) and more may follow as the vaccination rate here goes up, said Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary on Tuesday (Sept 14). But at the same time, the number of Public Health Preparedness Clinics (PHPCs) which offer vaccinations will be increased from the 79 now to around 100 by the end of October, he added as he stressed the importance of the jabs. There are currently 37 vaccination centres in operation. Those unable to go to vaccination centres or PHPCs to get inoculated will be visited by the Government's mobile and home vaccination teams, he said. Dr Janil was replying to 19 MPs who had asked for updates on the Covid-19 situation here and wanted to know more about Singapore's plans regarding vaccination and opening up. Currently, 81 per cent of Singapore's population are fully vaccinated. Noting that some MPs had asked about the criteria for moving from one stage of reopening to the next, Dr Janil said that what determines this is not just the vaccination rate. "I can understand the desire for transparent and pre-determined criteria, but other than vaccination rates, we ...

JPMorgan entices CEO Jamie Dimon to stick around with surprise stock award

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - Jamie Dimon's five-year retirement joke just got serious. The billionaire chief executive officer (CEO) of JPMorgan Chase & Co was granted a special gift to persuade him to lead the biggest US lender for another "significant number of years". He was awarded 1.5 million stock appreciation rights, which are like options and will let him capture a profit if the stock price rises in the coming years. At 65, Mr Dimon is the only sitting bank CEO who led a major firm through the financial crisis. He took over JPMorgan in 2005, and built it into the biggest and most profitable bank in the country. Mr Dimon's tenure, and the question of who may eventually succeed him, has long been a topic of interest across the financial industry and beyond. It came into heightened focus last year when Mr Dimon was sidelined for four weeks after he underwent emergency heart surgery. And the firm is also fresh off its biggest leadership shakeup in years, putting Marianne Lake and Jennifer Piepszak at the front of the race to potentially take over the top job. Mr Dimon himself has found ways to be non-committal about when he'll call it quits. His favourite quip: The date is five years...

SINGAPORE - In a move that surprised some home seekers as it deviated from the norm, the Housing Board (HDB) did not release on Tuesday (May 25) the site locations of upcoming Build-To-Order (BTO) projects for the November launch. The Straits Times understands that for future BTO launches going forward, HDB will only indicate the estates of the upcoming projects and the type of flats available six months ahead. Fewer cases but dengue still a danger

The danger from dengue is far from over, even as the number of cases in Singapore has fallen, the National Environment Agency (NEA) warned yesterday. There were 156 cases last week, compared with 236 infections a week in mid-December. However, the population of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector that spreads dengue, increased by 8 per cent last month. On top of that, infections by DenV-3 and DenV-4 - two dengue serotypes that are less commonly seen here - have increased and now account for more than half the cases. There are four dengue serotypes. People who have been infected are protected against only that particular type, and not the other three, which means that they remain susceptible. Over the three decades prior to last year, all dengue outbreaks here were caused by either DenV-1 or, since 2016, by DenV-2. As neither DenV-3 nor DenV-4 has infected large numbers of people in the past, the vast majority of the population would be susceptible. The rise of DenV-3 last year likely contributed to the largest dengue outbreak Singapore has ever seen, with a total of 35,315 people infected and at least 29 people dying from the disease. The previous high was 22,170 infections in 2...
