3 years’ jail for mum who abused her 2 daughters

SINGAPORE - A housewife who abused her two daughters, aged six and 10, breaking the older child's front teeth, was on Wednesday (Sept 29) sentenced to three years' jail. The woman's offences came to light when her 37-year-old husband returned home and found his daughter's teeth broken. He took the child to KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and the hospital later alerted the police. The abuse continued while the police were investigating her case and when she was out on bail. Before handing down the sentence on Wednesday, District Judge Kessler Soh addressed the woman, who appeared in court via video link, and told her: "Discipline (your children) if you must but do so appropriately." He also hopes that she will not "take it out" on her children again. On Sept 16, the mother, now 38, admitted to seven counts of abusing her daughters. Four other similar charges were considered during sentencing. The woman, who cannot be named to protect the victims' identities, also has a son whose age was not stated in court documents. A psychiatric report found that the woman was not suffering from any mental illness at the time of the offences. The court heard that in December 2018, her hus...

Man was on remission order when he allegedly dragged cop along with moving car

SINGAPORE - A man who allegedly drove off during a traffic police check and dragged an officer along the Central Expressway (CTE) last Saturday (March 27) was on remission order after his early release from prison last year. Singaporean Heng Yong Qin, now 31, was charged on Monday with causing grievous hurt to the officer by committing a rash act. Police said in a statement on Saturday evening that the policeman suffered multiple injuries and his condition was stable. They did not disclose details of his injuries. Heng had been released from prison last July after serving his sentence for offences that were not stated in court documents. The remission order involving his early release required him to stay out of trouble from July 11 last year to May 9 this year and to observe a daily curfew. Despite this, Heng is accused of breaching the curfew by failing to remain indoors in an Ang Mo Kio flat between Sept 27 and Oct 22 last year. Last Saturday, he was said to be driving a car along the CTE towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway at around 7.30am when the 36-year-old traffic police officer stopped him for suspected traffic violations. 2 in 5 security officers abused on the job, with figures rising due to Covid-19: Survey

SINGAPORE - Security officers here say it has become increasingly common for them to be subjected to some form of abuse, with the Covid-19 pandemic being blamed for increased tensions. A survey of 1,002 officers, conducted between September and November last year, found that two in five security officers were exposed to some form of abuse in their course of work. A previous survey of 707 officers released in June last year found that about one in three was abused on the job. Commenting on the results released on Thursday (March 25), Union of Security Employees (USE) executive secretary Steve Tan said that the officers were most commonly subjected to verbal abuse. This was in part because of the need for additional security checks in the light of safe measurement measures introduced amid the pandemic. "Visitors to various properties were asked to comply with safe management measures, and the person asking them to do it was the security officer," said Mr Tan. He added that officers were also under pressure from clients to ensure that the safe management rules were followed. "What is very clear is that Covid-19 has increased the tensions at the site," said Mr Tan. USE and the Singapor...
