Firm charged over alleged unauthorised works that led to Pasir Ris flood in August

SINGAPORE - Construction firm Samwoh Corp was charged in a district court on Tuesday (Nov 9) over alleged unauthorised works that led to a flood in Pasir Ris on Aug 20. A drain, which was purportedly altered by the firm, is said to be one of the causes for knee-high water to inundate a 200m section of the traffic junction of Tampines Avenue 10 and Pasir Ris Drive 12. The drain is located along Tampines Avenue 10, between Tampines Industrial Avenue 5 and Tampines Link. Thirteen vehicles were partially submerged and several motorists required help to evacuate from their vehicles. At least one person was taken to hospital. The incident also caused a traffic congestion that lasted two hours. After the incident, national water agency PUB said the affected junction is not flood-prone. But the flood on Aug 20 persisted for almost two hours while most flash floods in Singapore would subside within about 30 minutes. Samwoh had allegedly removed an existing drain that was 1.8m wide and 4m deep and replaced it with a newly constructed drain of the same width but shallower at 3m. It is also accused of causing obstruction to the flow of the storm water drainage system by erecting scaffolds to c...

Vacant premises in Pasir Panjang Road can be alternative distribution site for food supplies

SINGAPORE - The former Pasir Panjang Distriparkhas been identified as a possible alternative temporary distribution site in the event of disruptions in Singapore's food supply chain. Announcing this during her visit to the now-vacant premises, at 151 Pasir Panjang Road, on Tuesday (July 27), Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said Covid-19 clusters can cause short-term disruptions to the operations of Singapore's fishery ports and distribution centres. This was the case on July 17, when Jurong Fishery Port was closed due to a Covid-19 cluster. Shoppers were later seen snapping up fish in wet markets, while fish suppliers took to social media to announce they would not be taking new orders. Some market stalls selling fish sold out early for the day. On Monday, Ms Fu told Parliament that an alternative site was being made available for use in the event of another closure of the fishery ports or Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market. She said at the site on Tuesday: "In our food supply chains, our fishery ports and Pasir Panjang wholesale centres are important nodes - fishery ports for fish, and Pasir Panjang wholesale centre for vegetables and fruits." She added that t...

He told The Straits Times there are 79 units in the affected block, comprising a mix of households from young couples to intergenerational families. In his Facebook post, he added that there was no need for residents living in the surrounding blocks to get tested unless they had visited households in the block from May 2. The swab tests will be administered at the regional screening centre at the site of the former Coral Primary School from 9am to 4pm on Sunday and Monday (May 24). More details are provided on a flyer from the Health Ministry (MOH) that was delivered door-to-door, said Mr Tan, who is Minister of State for Home Affairs and Sustainability and the Environment.
