Can China pull itself out of the economic doldrums?

BEIJING (CAIXIN GLOBAL) - China's gross domestic product (GDP) growth is expected to slow even further in the fourth quarter, as outbreaks of Covid-19 across the country, power shortages, surging raw material prices and property jitters continue to weigh on activity, adding pressure on policymakers to do more to support the economy. Analysts say the government will need to ease fiscal and monetary policies to prop up demand while ensuring that the measures don't derail its efforts to curb carbon emissions and resolve long-standing problems, such as the overheated housing market and high corporate debt. As the world's second-largest economy ploughs through the final quarter of the year, here are five key things to watch for. Can the slowdown in GDP growth be reversed? The short answer is no, at least in the near term. Analysts expect economic expansion to continue to moderate in the fourth quarter from the 4.9 per cent year-on-year pace seen in the July-September period, which was the weakest in a year. Even so, China will still be able to achieve its full-year GDP growth target of above 6 per cent. This is because expansion in the first half was much stronger - 18.3 per cent year o...

Grab posts $1.34 billion net loss for Q3, as Covid-19 curbs hit ride-hailing in region

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - South-east Asia's largest ride-hailing and food delivery firm Grab Holdings on Thursday (Nov 11) reported a net loss of US$988 million (S$1.34 billion) for the July-September quarter, 59 per cent more than the year-ago loss of US$621 million. Total revenue for the third quarter fell 9 per cent to US$157 million, from US$172 million a year earlier, as its ride-hailing business was hit by Covid-19 curbs in some countries in the region. Fresh outbreaks in South-east Asia hit Grab's mobility unit that fell behind its deliveries business, its largest by billings. Its mobility business brought in US$88 million in revenue, down 26 per cent from a year earlier, while sales at its deliveries unit rose 58 per cent. "Mobility and food delivery services were suspended in Vietnam for most of Q3, and six of our core countries in which we operate experienced tighter movement controls," said chief financial officer Peter Oey. CEO Anthony Tan told an investor webcast that the company expects major recovery for the ride-hailing business in the fourth quarter, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, as vaccination rates increase in the region, the Nikkei Asia reported. Amazon’s holiday-quarter forecast disappoints as labour, supply issues mount

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA (REUTERS) - Amazon.com on Thursday (Oct 28) reported a slump in profit that it expects will continue through the holiday quarter, as higher wages and spending to attract workers diminish the company's windfall from online shopping. Shares fell 4 per cent in after-hours trade. After a year of blockbuster results, the world's largest online retailer is facing a tougher outlook. In a tight labour market, it has boosted average US warehouse pay to US$18 (S$24) an hour and marketed bigger signing bonuses to attract the blue-collar staff it needs to keep its high-turnover operation humming. The company is also contending with global supply chain disruptions. It has doubled its container processing ability, expanded its delivery service partner program and has ramped up its warehouse investments - all at a noteworthy cost. Amazon said it expects operating profit for the current quarter to be between US$0 and US$3.0 billion, short of US$6.9 billion posted the year prior. In the third quarter, net income fell by about 50 per cent to US$3.16 billion, a first since the start of the pandemic in the United States. Chief executive Andy Jassy, who took the helm in July, said...

Chip shortage dents earnings at GM and Ford

NEW YORK (NYTIMES) - Two big Detroit automakers said on Wednesday (Oct 27) that the worldwide shortage of computer chips had weighed on their third-quarter earnings, but there were signs that the worst of the disruption was behind them. Of the two, Ford Motor fared better. Its revenue fell about 5 per cent from a year earlier, to US$35.7 billion (S$48.1 billion), while General Motors' revenue declined 25 per cent, to US$26.8 billion. "The quarter was challenging due to continuing semiconductor pressures," GM's CEO, Mary T. Barra, said in a letter to shareholders. A statement from Ford emphasized a brightening outlook. "Semiconductor availability remains a challenge, but markedly improved from the second quarter," it said. Ford investors were also upbeat. The company's shares rose 8 per cent after Ford's announcement, which came after the closing bell. General Motors gave its report before the market opened, and its shares ended the day down 5 per cent. Modern automobiles require dozens of computer chips - largely made in Asia - for a wide range of electronic components such as engine controllers and infotainment systems. With chips scarce because of pandemic-related manufacturing a...

Microsoft sees cloud business growth, but supply woes continue for Xbox

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - Microsoft on Tuesday (Oct 26) forecast a strong end to the calendar year thanks to its booming cloud business but said supply chain woes will continue to dog key units such as those producing its Surface laptops and Xbox gaming consoles. The company beat Wall Street expectations for its first quarter ended Sept 30, with pandemic-induced demand for the software giant's cloud-based services driving sales. Contracts for cloud services provided by Microsoft, Amazon.com's AWS and Alphabet-owned Google Cloud have surged since last year when the Covid-19 pandemic shut offices and schools, pushing more activity online. First-quarter revenue growth for Azure, the company's flagship cloud computing business, came in at 48 per cent in constant currency to beat analysts' estimates of 47.5 per cent, according to consensus data from Visible Alpha. Microsoft's executive vice-president and chief financial officer Amy Hood said that the company also expected "broad-based growth" for the unit in the fiscal second quarter. Azure's growth rate is the best direct measure of competition with rivals such as AWS and Google Cloud as Microsoft does not break out revenue from the cloud ...

South Korea economic growth slows on supply snags, Covid-19 curbs

SEOUL (BLOOMBERG) - South Korea’s economic expansion cooled last quarter as global supply chain snags dragged down investment and a renewed virus outbreak weighed on household spending. Gross domestic product gained 0.3 per cent in the July-September period, decelerating from 0.8 per cent in the second quarter and just half the 0.6 per cent predicted by economists, data from the Bank of Korea (BOK) showed on Tuesday (Oct 26). The economy expanded 4 per cent from a year earlier. The result complicates the BOK’s plans for another interest-rate increase this year, after it began a tightening cycle in August. The central bank may choose to look through the slowdown after saying earlier this week that it expects rising vaccinations and lighter restrictions to give the economy renewed impetus. Governor Lee Ju-yeol has said the BOK will consider another hike in November in the event the recovery proceeds as expected, having projected a 4 per cent expansion for 2021. Growth had been expected to ease in the third quarter as daily infections surged above 1,000 from July and authorities imposed a semi-lockdown in Seoul and other major cities. In an online seminar on Monday, the BOK said it ex...

S’pore’s economic growth moderates to 6.5% year-on-year in Q3: Flash data

SINGAPORE - Singapore's economy expanded at a slower annual pace in the third quarter compared to the previous three-month period when growth was boosted by a low-base effect. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose 6.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the July-September period, moderating from 15.2 per cent growth in the previous quarter, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) on Thursday (Oct 14). However, on a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy expanded by 0.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2021, a reversal from the 1.4 per cent contraction in the preceding quarter. MTI said that the strong annual growth recorded in the second quarter of 2021 was largely due to the low base in the corresponding quarter of 2020 when GDP fell by 13.3 per cent due to the Circuit Breaker (CB) measures implemented from April 7 to June 1 2020, as well as the sharp fall in external demand amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. A higher than expected year-on-year growth in the April-June period, plans for a gradual reopening of borders and easing of Covid-19 curbs have raised hopes of a faster economic recovery for Singapore this year. But analysts have also warned that the path to t...
