Man who allegedly made racist remarks, attacked undergrad to be charged with public nuisance

SINGAPORE - The police will be charging on Saturday (July 3) a man who allegedly shouted racist remarks and attacked a university student at East Coast Park on Friday morning. In a statement on Saturday morning, the police said the 33-year-old Singaporean will be charged with the offence of public nuisance, with "a view to seek an order from the court to remand the man for psychiatric assessment". At 1.50am on Friday, the police received a call about the incident at East Coast Park Carpark F2. The police said preliminary investigations revealed that a man allegedly shouted racist remarks at two different groups of Chinese men and assaulted one of the men. When officers arrived, the suspect was no longer at the scene, but was later arrested for the offence of public nuisance when the Indian Singaporean's identity was established. A 21-year-old man was subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital while conscious and was not hospitalised. Ex-property agent caught on video allegedly making racist remarks on MRT train offered $5k bail

SINGAPORE - A woman who had been caught on video making purportedly racist remarks has been offered bail of $5,000 after she was remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric observation. Former property agent Tan Beow Hiong, 57, is now represented by lawyer Sng Kheng Huat who appeared in a district court on Friday (July 2). He told the court he understood her IMH report was ready. The lawyer did not disclose its details. Mr Sng also said that he will make representations to see if the prosecution is willing to consider a mandatory treatment order (MTO) for his client. Offenders given an MTO will have to undergo treatment to address their mental issues in lieu of jail time. Man who allegedly harassed 2 women with racist slurs intends to plead guilty

SINGAPORE - A man allegedly harassed two women with racist slurs in separate incidents, and a district court heard on Thursday (June 24) that he intends to plead guilty to his charges. Periyanayagam Appavoo, 52, is accused of two counts of harassment and one count of using criminal force on a man. His nationality as well as the nationalities of his alleged victims were not disclosed in court documents. He is expected to plead guilty on July 27. Periyanayagam was at a Rivervale Drive supermarket in Sengkang on April 23 last year when he allegedly verbally abused a woman identified as Ms Kamsuna with vulgar language. He is said to have told her: "Be careful as I would return to beat you... You Chinese people bring the Covid into Singapore." He was at Sengkang General Hospital on June 23 last year when he allegedly targeted a nurse, Ms Catherine Lam, and abused her with vulgar language. Woman who shouted racist abuse on bus jailed for 4 weeks

SINGAPORE - A woman who hurled racist insults and profanities at another woman on a bus for over seven minutes was sentenced to four weeks' jail on Wednesday (June 23). Siti Ai'sha Jaffar, 40, called the victim, Ms Danaletchmi Selvam, 33, a "stupid Indian" during her tirade, which the court heard was unprovoked. Siti Ai'sha, who was unrepresented and appeared via video link, frowned and lowered her head as two video clips of the incident were played in court. In passing a deterrent sentence, District Judge Tan Jen Tse said that "in no way can this (sort) of offence... stand in our society". The court heard that the incident occurred on Sept 3 last year at around 9.30am, after the victim boarded the service 182 bus from Tuas Checkpoint. She was listening to music using her earphones when she noticed Siti Ai'sha pointing and staring at her. In the two clips played in court, which were taken by the victim, Siti Ai'sha can be seen gesturing and shouting at the woman, calling her a "minority".
