St James’ Church Kindergarten to shut Dempsey campus by end-2022

SINGAPORE - St James' Church Kindergarten will be shutting its branch in the Dempsey area by the end of next year, having lost the tender for the property. It first opened its doors there in 2006. A check on the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) website last month showed that the tender for the 20,500 sq ft site in Harding Road had been awarded to Odyssey The Global Preschool, which placed the highest bid of $133,333 a month in rent from 2023. The tenure is for an initial three-year tenancy, which can be renewed for two further periods of three and two years. Anglican Preschool Services (APS), which runs St James' Church Kindergarten, had placed a bid of $76,200 a month for the site, which comprises four blocks and a sprawling garden. The non-profit pre-school's lease ends on Dec 31 next year. APS chief executive Andrew Tay told The Straits Times on Nov 24 that it will be moving the pupils enrolled at the Harding Road campus to any of the other 18 pre-schools under APS. These include two other St James' Church Kindergarten campuses - one in Leedon Road and the other in Gilstead Road - and the Little Seeds Preschool childcare centres. Orchard Road Christmas light-up returns this year with floral theme and giant outdoor projection

SINGAPORE - The organisers of the annual Christmas light-up in Orchard Road do not want the pandemic to take the shine off the iconic event, returning with a bigger and better edition amid a higher vaccination take-up in the country . While there will be no street activities and performances like last year, this year's event will have a giant outdoor video projection cast on the facade of Mandarin Orchard Singapore, and resumption of popular Christmas carols after a three-year hiatus, the Orchard Road Business Association (Orba) said on Tuesday (Oct 19). Themed "Christmas in Bloom", this year's iteration will see the shopping street set aglow with about 68km of fairy lights and oversized floral decorations, with some parts dressed with bold neon lights, to give off a "mesmerising effect". The theme this year is meant to symbolise a journey of hope and resilience, as businesses along Singapore's most popular shopping strip yearn for a return to normalcy. Orba's chairman Mark Shaw said it has been a hard year for tourism and retail businesses with significant disruptions due to the pandemic. "We hope that the aspects of the light-up will help us bring awareness to Orchard Road and he...

New U-turn before Newton Circus added to ease traffic at roundabout

SINGAPORE - A new U-turn in Dunearn Road near Newton Circus was opened on Sunday (Sept 12), allowing drivers to turn into Woodlands-bound Bukit Timah Road without having to use the congested roundabout. With this, all the enhancement works at Newton Circus, which began in 2017, have been completed. Another U-turn, on the other side of Newton Circus, which allows motorists to turn from Woodlands-bound Bukit Timah Road towards the city, opened in July. The authorities hope these will reduce the number of vehicles using the roundabout, which recorded an average of nine accidents a year between 2016 and 2018. Thousands of people should benefit from the completion of the project, which had been slightly delayed by Covid-19. Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Alvin Tan, who is the MP representing the area, said the new U-turn will help motorists and residents better navigate Newton Circus, which “can be a bit of a mess”. Parents dropping off their children in the schools nearby – such as Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and ACS (Barker Road) – will hopefully also find peak-hour traffic less daunting, he said. “The new U-turn should alleviate traffic even more than the prev...

More road dividers to be installed at Tanjong Pagar Road after fatal CNY accident

SINGAPORE - More safety features will be installed at Tanjong Pagar Road by the end of the year, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Wednesday (Sept 8). This follows the fiery pre-dawn accident on Feb 13, the second day of Chinese New Year, when a white speeding BMW slammed into a vacant shophouse unit and burst into flames. All five men in the vehicle were killed. LTA told The Straits Times more road dividers will be installed along Tanjong Pagar Road in the coming months. The intersection between Tanjong Pagar Road and Tras Link will also have traffic lights and pedestrian crossings installed. Members of Parliament for the area, Ms Indranee Rajah and Ms Josephine Teo, said earlier that the Traffic Police and LTA would look into the road conditions there. Among the suggestions were more cameras and speed bumps. Responding to queries from ST, LTA said that according to past records, the location is not accident-prone and there are already several existing traffic-calming measures. These include on-street parking, centre median strips and designated crossing points aimed to slow down motorists. To improve the safety of traffic conditions in the area, it will be putting in pla...

PUB to raise 450m stretch of flood-prone Dunearn Road to reduce risk of flash floods

SINGAPORE - National water agency PUB will be raising a 450m stretch of Dunearn Road, where flash floods have occurred three times this year, to reduce the risk of such incidents there. The works are expected to be completed by November this year, PUB said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 28). Details on how high the road will be raised is still being fine tuned. The raising of the road will be an interim flood-proofing measure before ongoing drainage expansion works along Bukit Timah complete by the first quarter of 2024. PUB said that the drainage improvement project to widen and deepen a 900m section of the Bukit Timah Canal will help to address the problem. Last Tuesday (Aug 24), heavy rain caused a flash flood that resulted in the stretch of Dunearn Road between Sime Darby Centre and Binjai Park to become impassible for about 40 minutes. That day, more rain pelted western Singapore in three hours than the average rainfall for the whole month of August. On July 12 and April 17 this year, heavy rain also caused flash flooding incidents there. PUB said: "When completed, the upgraded canal will enhance flood protection for the surrounding area including Dunearn Road, and reduce the...
