Kitchen Culture Says 5 Directors Will Remain on its Board as Purported EGM Held Last Friday Is Invalid; Asks Requisitioners to Put Matters Before Singapore Court

SINGAPORE, Nov 28, 2022 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Kitchen Culture Holdings Ltd. ("Kitchen Culture" or the "Company") said today that 5 directors that requisitioners sought to replace through a purported Extraordinary General Meeting last Friday ("Purported EGM") will remain. Instead, the Company deems the meeting and resolutions purportedly passed to be invalid, and has asked the requisitioners to put the matter before the Singapore Court.Responding to a press release issued on 25 November 2022 on ACN Newswire by the 8 requisitioners, Kitchen Culture said it had written the same day to lawyers for the latter asking for key information. ("Kitchen Culture" or the "Company") said today that a group of 8 shareholders ("the requisitioners") seeking to remove 5 of 6 directors has caused confusion among shareholders and the public by publishing a newspaper advertisement calling off the Extraordinary General Meeting ("EGM") with 1 working day's notice before it was due to be held. The Company said it was made aware of a relatively small advertisement published by the requisitioners in The Business Times on 29 October 2022 (Saturday) to 'postpone' the EGM - originally proposed for 9.00 am on 1 November 2022 (Tuesday) at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel - even though the requisitioners had not communicated this to the Board of Directors ("the Board").While the requisitioners had published a significantly larger advertisement in The Sunday Times - a different newspaper - on 16 October 2022 calling for the EGM and had issued a press release via ACN newswire 8 days later urging shareholders to attend, they now "... appear, suddenly and without giving any explanation, to have diametrically changed their minds with just 1 working day befor...

HDB to launch up to 23,000 BTO flats a year over next two years

SINGAPORE - Up to 23,000 Build-To-Order (BTO) flats will be launched each year in 2022 and 2023 to meet the strong demand for public housing, said the Housing Board on Thursday (Dec 16). This represents a 35 per cent increase every year in the number of flats available, from the 17,000 flats launched this year, said HDB. Next year, home buyers can tap BTO flats across mature and non-mature towns such as Bukit Merah, Jurong West, Kallang Whampoa, Queenstown, Tengah, Toa Payoh and Yishun. National Development Minister Desmond Lee said at a press conference that HDB will be prepared to launch up to 100,000 flats from 2021 to 2025, and will calibrate supply based on prevailing demand. Mr Lee noted that BTO application rates have increased from 3.7 applications per BTO flat in 2019 to 5.5 in 2021, despite more flats being offered by the HDB. HDB launched around 14,600 units in 2019 and around 17,000 units a year in 2020 and 2021. The strong demand was driven by newly married couples and a growing trend of people choosing to live in smaller households, added Mr Lee. HDB said that a buoyant resale market amid the Covid-19 pandemic also channelled more demand to the BTO market. HDB added: ...

India outlines $13.7 billion plan to woo global chip makers

NEW DELHI (REUTERS) - India has approved a US$10 billion (S$13.7 billion) incentive plan to attract semiconductor and display manufacturers, its technology minister said on Wednesday (Dec 15), as part of a deepening push to establish the country as a global electronics production hub. Under the plan, India's government will extend fiscal support of up to 50 per cent of a project's cost to eligible display and semiconductor fabricators, the government said in a statement. Israel's Tower Semiconductor, Taiwan's Foxconn and a consortium from Singapore have shown interest in setting up chip factories in India while Vedanta Group was keen to set up a display plant, a government source told Reuters. Tower, Foxconn and Vedanta did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "The programme will usher in a new era in electronics manufacturing by providing a globally competitive incentive package to companies in semiconductors and display manufacturing as well as design," the government statement said. The drive comes as some companies look to diversify their manufacturing bases beyond China due to the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing and is a sign India is trying to mov...

Apple delays employees’ return to office indefinitely

LOS ANGELES (BLOOMBERG) - Apple, facing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases and the fast-spreading Omicron variant, is delaying its corporate return-to-office deadline from Feb 1 to a "date yet to be determined." Employees were informed of the move via a memo sent by chief executive officer Tim Cook on Wednesday (Dec 15). An Apple spokesman confirmed the decision to Bloomberg News. The delay comes just weeks after the company asked employees to begin returning by February, a timeline that had already been pushed back several times. The lack of a firm date shows the struggle that companies face in trying to get their operations back to normal. Fellow technology giant Microsoft scrapped its return-to-work date in September. "We are delaying the start of our hybrid work pilot to a date yet to be determined," Mr Cook said in the memo. "Our offices remain open and many of our colleagues are coming in regularly, including our teams in Greater China and elsewhere." He cited as reasons the "rising cases in many parts of the world and the emergence of a new strain of the virus". Mr Cook also strongly encouraged employees to receive vaccinations and booster shots, saying "this is by far the best ...

Activist Gilbert Goh charged after allegedly staging protest near ICA building

SINGAPORE - Local activist Goh Keow Wah, better known as Gilbert Goh, was charged in a district court on Wednesday (Dec 15) with an offence under the Public Order Act after he allegedly staged an unlawful protest near the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority building in Kallang Road on May 1. The Singaporean is said to have held up a placard stating: "Please ban all flights from India we are not racist! Just being cautious." Police said in a statement on Tuesday that he did not have a permit to carry out the public assembly. Goh, now 60, had posted a picture of himself with the placard on Facebook on May 1, a week after Singapore barred all long-term pass holders and short-term visitors who had travelled to India in the past 14 days from entering or transiting through the country. The move was announced by the multi-ministry task force on Covid-19, following a surge in cases in India. He was also charged on Wednesday with refusing to sign his statement to the police at the Bedok Police Division Headquarters at around 4pm on May 11. Details about the statement were not disclosed in court documents. Separately, police said in their statement that he had allowed a foreigner to partic...

Sentencing delayed for ex-CEO of Prive Group who assaulted teen: Doctor said boy provoked assailant

SINGAPORE - The sentencing of the former chief executive of food and beverage firm The Prive Group who assaulted a teenager has been postponed after his doctor said that the boy had provoked his assailant. French national Vu Han Jean-Luc Kha, now 44, was initially expected to be sentenced on Tuesday (Dec 14), but the case was adjourned to February after the court heard that, according to a report by Kha's doctor, the then 13-year-old boy had provoked him. This is contrary to the facts that Kha had earlier admitted to, which stated that the attack was unprovoked. Defence lawyer Teh Ee-Von then amended her documents to state that Kha had instead "perceived" that the victim said "something irksome" to her client, but Kha was unable to recall what the purported remark was. After this, District Judge Lim Tse Haw told Ms Teh to furnish the doctor with this clarification as well as court documents Kha had admitted to when he pleaded guilty in October. This, so that the doctor could give further clarification on the matter. Kha is now expected to be sentenced on Feb 9 next year. Ms Teh had earlier pleaded for the judge to call for a report to assess her client's suitability for a mandatory...

Trust, pragmatism, renewal: The book Lee Kuan Yew asked for but did not get to read

SINGAPORE - The mic drop came one minute into the interview: It was founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew who, in mid-2011, asked Dr Shashi Jayakumar to write a book on the history of Singapore's ruling party. Given how fundamental Mr Lee was to the book, Dr Jayakumar - who is a senior fellow and head of the Centre of Excellence for National Security at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies - felt the proper way to credit him was to state in his speech on Tuesday (Dec 14) Mr Lee's key role, rather than simply a brief acknowledgement in the introductory matter. Indeed, there is little mention of Mr Lee in the acknowledgements section of A History Of The PAP: 1985-2021. Only near the bottom of Page 717, among a list of interviews with politicians, is there a brief entry: "Lee Kuan Yew, 28 Dec 2011". Mr Lee was in a reflective mood after the watershed 2011 General Election, and had made it clear he wanted two things: First, an academic approach to the history of the People’s Action Party (PAP) compared with an earlier 2009 book Men In White: The Untold Story Of Singapore's Ruling Political Party - in short, a treatment of the PAP not solely as a political party, but also th...

NCID head writes children’s book on Covid-19, featuring artwork by children and youth

SINGAPORE - As a veteran researcher and scientist, Professor Leo Yee Sin has published hundreds of papers filled with terms and diagrams that would make a layman sweat. But the National Centre for Infectious Diseases executive director's latest work is written in rhyme, and filled with drawings done by children and youth, some as young as five years old. The book, titled My Coronavirus Story, captures perspectives of the pandemic as seen through the eyes of a young child, and is aimed at educating the young about Covid-19 and encouraging resilience as the world lives with the virus. Written for a young audience aged four to 12, it was launched by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung at the Woodlands Regional Library on Monday (Dec 13). The book, supported by the National Healthcare Group (NHG), pays tribute to the courage and selfless contributions of all front-line workers in steering Singapore into the endemic stage of Covid-19. Prof Leo, who read the book on stage together with Mr Ong, said that the pandemic has been a confusing period for children as they tried to make sense of the changes around them. "I saw first-hand what it means to be on the front line dealing with Covid-19, and I ...

Evergrande: The rise and fall of China’s property giant

BEIJING (AFP) - Chinese real estate behemoth Evergrande on Thursday defaulted on its debt, said the Fitch Ratings agency, which cited the crisis-hit developer's failure to make repayments on more than US$1.2 billion (S$1.6 billion) in US dollar bonds. The default is the property giant's first since it became mired in a debt crisis that has rattled investors who fear a wider contagion. Another much smaller Chinese property firm, Kaisa, also defaulted on US$400 million of bonds on Thursday, Fitch said. Here is a timeline of Evergrande's rise to become one of China's biggest developers, demise into one of its worst debtors and, ultimately, default: 1996: The dream begins Steel-factory worker Hui Ka Yan starts Evergrande, targeting millions of middle-class Chinese climbing onto the property ladder across the rapidly urbanising country. 2009-10: Start of expansion After going public in 2009, Evergrande takes control of Chinese Super League club Guangzhou, renaming it Guangzhou Evergrande, and spends billions of dollars on foreign players, helping it to win a succession of titles. The company also moves into the dairy, grain and oil businesses and later tries to build an electric car - k...

‘I actually thought I was going to die’: Man who was attacked by otters at Botanic Gardens

SINGAPORE - A man's visit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens ended with a trip to the hospital, after a group of otters bit him in the legs, buttocks and finger. The attack on Nov 30 left Mr Graham George Spencer with more than 20 wounds, with some requiring stitches. It is not the first time that otters have attacked people here but animal welfare groups have said the animals are not typically aggressive and their actions could have been triggered by their perception that they were threatened. Recounting the Nov 30 experience to The Straits Times on Thursday (Dec 9), Mr Spencer, a Singapore permanent resident, said: "I actually thought I was going to die - they were going to kill me." The maid agency owner, who is British and in his 60s, said he was attacked at about 6.40am. He was at the end of a routine morning walk with a friend, and was approaching the Singapore Botanic Gardens' entrance at Taman Serasi. He spotted about 20 otters crossing a dimly-lit path about 4m in front of him. This was the first time he had seen otters in the park since he started his morning walks about five months ago. The animals were moving quietly but "went crazy" after another man ran towards them. Th...

Trump social media deal under investigation by US regulators

BENGALURU/NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Wall Street's top financial regulators are investigating former US President Donald Trump's US$1.25 billion (S$1.7 billion) deal to float his new social media venture on the stock market, a filing showed. Digital World Acquisition Corp, the blank-cheque acquisition firm that agreed to merge with Trump Media & Technology Group Corp (TMTG), disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday (Dec 6) that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (Finra) were probing the deal. TMTG did not respond to requests for comment. Digital World said the SEC asked for documents in early November relating to communications between Digital World and TMTG, meetings of Digital World's board, policies and procedures relating to trading, the identification of banking, telephone, and email addresses and the identities of certain investors. The SEC stated in its request that its investigation does not mean the regulator has concluded that anyone violated the law, Digital World added. US Senator Elizabeth Warren had asked the SEC to investigate TMTG's proposed merger with Digital World over potential violations of securities law...
