SINGAPORE - United States Vice-President Kamala Harris touched down in Singapore on Sunday (Aug 22) and kicked off an official visit to South-east Asia - her first outside the Americas since being sworn into office in January. Ms Harris arrived on Air Force Two at about 10.50am at Paya Lebar Air Base. She will be in Singapore until Tuesday afternoon, when she will head to Vietnam before departing the region on Thursday. She was received at the airbase by Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. Ms Harris was accompanied by more than 20 staff and security officers. All of them were wearing face masks, in line with Covid-19 safe management measures. Last Thursday, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said Ms Harris will be subject to regular Covid-19 testing and a controlled itinerary to keep her visit to Singapore safe. Ms Harris, who left the US on Saturday, remained on board Air Force Two when it stopped in Anchorage, Alaska, to refuel and Japanese capital Tokyo, said the White House. Ms Harris, 56, will begin a flurry of formal engagements on Monday with a call on President Halimah Yacob at the Istana, followed by a meeting and joint press conference with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. SINGAPORE - Singapore has contributed 100,000 doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine to Brunei, as part of bilateral efforts to tackle the pandemic. Singapore High Commissioner to the UK rebuts Economist article on race relations in Singapore

SINGAPORE - An Economist article on race relations and racial harmony in Singapore has drawn a rebuttal from Mr Lim Thuan Kuan, Singapore's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. In a letter published on the magazine's website, Mr Lim stated that readers of the article titled Imperfect Harmony would not have guessed that Singapore was born as an independent country precisely because its leaders refused to countenance a political arrangement based on the dominance of one race. He added that, having separated from Malay-majority Malaysia in 1965, the easiest path for founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his colleagues would have been to base their political legitimacy on the Chinese majority in Singapore. "Rather, against the odds and with great courage, they insisted on building a multiracial polity." Mr Lim was responding to the article published on July 31, which said that Chinese chauvinism has deep roots in Singapore, and characterised tensions between the races here as having "simmered for decades". The Economist wrote that minorities here are marginalised, that successive Prime Ministers having been Chinese, and that Chinese privilege continues to be sustained. "The gove...

Xin Xin and Le Le among names suggested by ST readers for first panda cub born in S’pore

SINGAPORE - Xin Xin and Le Le are among the popular names suggested by netizens for the first panda cub to be born in Singapore. The Straits Times asked on Facebook for suggestions of a name for the newborn panda, and netizens responded. Xin Xin refers to heart in Mandarin, or alludes to Singapore. Some netizens also spelt it as Xing Xing or Sing Sing, which would mean stars. Le Le refers to joy. Said Facebook user Yvonne Chua: "Since the mum's name starts with 'J' and the dad's name 'K', their junior (should) start with 'L'." The panda cub was born to parents Kai Kai and Jia Jia at the River Safari at about 7.50am on Saturday (Aug 14). Other name suggestions included Xi Wang (hope in Mandarin), An An (peace) and Kang Kang (health). En En, which refers to gratitude in Mandarin, was another idea. Facebook user Celia Chong, who suggested it, said: “Gratitude to the animal care team that helped Jia Jia during (her) pregnancy period in Singapore.” Qi Qi, referring to the number seven in Mandarin, was suggested by Facebook user Derek Lee, who pointed out that the cub was born on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It also happened to be during the giant pandas' s...

Over 20,500 jobs, attachments and traineeships still available in infocomm sector

SINGAPORE - More than 20,500 jobs, traineeships, attachments and other opportunities are still on offer in the information and communications sector. This is after nearly 16,200 job seekers were placed in positions within the sector by the end of May, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Workforce Singapore (WSG) in a jobs situation report on Friday (Aug 13). Last year, MOM and WSG worked with 240 partners - from industry groups to recruitment firms - to match job seekers and employers. This is 20 per cent more than in 2019. Manpower Minister Tan See Leng said such partners' respective resources and networks play a crucial role in helping job seekers during these challenging times. "Many of these initiatives are ground-up efforts, and are the fruits of labour of various individuals and organisations," added Dr Tan, who was speaking to reporters after meeting virtually with LinkedIn Asia Pacific staff. Among the collaborations that have boosted job-matching efforts was the government's tapping on technology firms to leverage artificial intelligence and other functions to improve career match services such as on WSG's MyCareersFuture jobs portal. On the community front, WSG's volu...

Building a thriving tech ecosystem in Singapore

SINGAPORE - The start-up scene here has much to show for in 2021, producing an impressive string of built-in-Singapore unicorns, which are private companies now valued at more than US$1 billion (S$1.4 billion). Despite the economic headwinds induced by the pandemic, technology companies like PatSnap, Carro, Nium and others have achieved remarkable growth, carving out dominant positions regionally and even globally - in areas such as e-commerce, intellectual property, fintech, the biosciences and property tech. Following in the footsteps of tech giants Grab and Sea, local start-ups are now making confident strides along a well-beaten path from seed and Series A funding rounds to a high-profile public listing. Collectively, the tech community - what some have called Singapore Tech Inc - is flying the national colours high. But how has Singapore done it - and how should the country ensure ongoing success on this front? What the tech community needs Singapore may not have a large marketplace allowing start-ups to scale quickly in a single jurisdiction - an important enabler for tech companies that make it big in the United States, China, India and the Euro zone. But an awareness of its...

The retired operations controller got involved in community work in 1994, when Chai Chee was a new estate. "At the time, all the residents were from different parts of Singapore. I was able to help get them together, to build very strong community bonds," said Mr Zulkefle, who has lived in Sengkang for the past two decades. He speaks English, Malay and even a smattering of dialect, which helps him connect with Singaporeans of all backgrounds. "Basically, I'm able t...

Singapore sets sights on becoming world force in e-sports

SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - Singapore may not compete for gold in many Olympic events, but the city-state is emerging as a force in a different kind of sport: mobile and video games. In May, Singapore hosted the Free Fire World Series, which garnered a peak viewership of 5.4 million - the highest ever for any e-sports match outside of Chinese platforms, according to Esports Charts. Last month, the Republic opened its first e-sports experiential centre, equipped with world-class live streaming and pro-e-sports facilities. Come year-end, when Singapore aims to have loosened border restrictions, it is set to host the first Asian edition of Gamescom - the world's largest video game industry event - and the inaugural Global Esports Games. The island aims to capitalise on the billion-dollar e-sports sector, banking on its infrastructure investments, status as a global business hub and gaming ecosystem to become South-east Asia's leading destination for the fast-growing sport. "Our world-class events and digital infrastructure have also made Singapore an attractive location for the industry to hold gaming and e-sports events here," the Singapore Tourism Board and Enterprise Singapore said in ...

Canadian who robbed StanChart bank will not be caned; assurance was given to Britain by S’pore to secure his extradition

SINGAPORE - David James Roach, the Canadian sentenced to five years' jail and six strokes of the cane for robbing a bank of more than $30,000 in 2016, has been spared the cane. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Sunday (July 25) that Roach, who committed the Standard Chartered Bank robbery which took place on July 7, 2016, had his sentence of caning remitted on Saturday. This is because the Singapore Government had assured Britain that any corporal sentence on Roach, who had fled Singapore, would not be carried out in order to secure his extradition. The ministry said that the President, on the advice of the Cabinet, has exercised her powers under Article 22P(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore to remit the sentence of six strokes of the cane imposed on Roach. "The Singapore Government has thus fulfilled the assurance given to the United Kingdom (UK) Government. No alternative punishment will be imposed on Roach in lieu of the remitted sentence of caning." David James Roach, now 31, had fled Singapore soon after the robbery, where he made off with $30,000. He was sentenced on Wednesday (July 7). MHA said that Roach fled Singapore to Thailand on the day of th...

Designing S’pore’s future: Integrate nature with built environment as climate shifts

SINGAPORE - Singaporeans living with the reality of temperatures creeping upwards can take comfort that mitigating the impact of climate change may not require drastic changes to land use, but can be achieved by using land efficiently in integrating nature with the built environment. The role of vegetation in cooling and shading can only become more relevant in time to come as the planet warms, said conservation scientist Roman Carrasco from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Greenery can be intensified on rooftops and building facades, for example, so that scarce land resources can be put to multiple purposes, he said. Singapore's vision of becoming a City in Nature, which can be achieved by softening urban infrastructure and re-establishing ecological connections within the city, and the Singapore Green Plan 2030 will help mitigate the impact of climate change, said experts. Another inevitable impact of climate change, sea-level rise, means the island republic must look for ways to guard its coastline. One of these is to have multi-functional coastal protection methods that provide recreational opportunities and are integrated with existing natural defences such as mangr...

Temasek defends green goals as it backs Singapore Airlines, Sembcorp Marine

SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - It might seem contradictory to invest in carbon-emitting polluters while pledging to be an eco-trailblazer, but that's exactly what Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings is attempting to do. As one of the world's largest institutional investors, its US$282 billion (S$384.6 billion) portfolio is replete with businesses that contribute to global warming - from Singapore Airlines to Sembcorp Marine, a supplier of offshore rigs. While peers like Norway's sovereign wealth fund have used hard targets and the sale of assets to improve their green credentials, Temasek is taking a different path. "We never said we will not invest in an emitter of carbon - as long as this emitter is on a journey, a path and we can be helpful in terms of how we can shift them," Nagi Hamiyeh, Temasek International's joint head of investments, said in an interview. Temasek's approach is emblematic of the delicate dance many global investors face, especially those laden with legacy assets that once belonged to the state. The pressure of maintaining returns without causing social upheaval and job losses while pledging to be green can be hard to reconcile, especially in a city-state whe...

Singapore’s grip on $41 billion oil market challenged by China

SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - Singapore is facing the greatest competition yet to its status as the dominant marine fuel supplier in Asia, with China luring more ships to its shores following a rapid expansion of its port and refining facilities. China's marine fuel sales - known in the industry as bunkering - have almost doubled over the past five years and the nation is banking on attracting ships that travel to nearby ports in major economies such as South Korea and Japan. Singapore still has a commanding position as the top supplier to a sector valued at over US$30 billion (S$41 billion) in Asia, but Chinese growth is accelerating. The epicentre of China's bunkering is Zhoushan, an archipelago to the south of Shanghai on the east coast. Some of the nation's newest and biggest crude oil refineries are being built in the area, while the government has introduced tax incentives that make Chinese fuels more competitive. "Singapore has had an edge over other Asian ports on all parameters," said Mr Jayendu Krishna, director at Drewry Maritime Advisors. "It continues to be so today, however, slowly other ports have been trying to catch up. Zhoushan will certainly capture a share of the vess...
