4 years’ jail for man who molested young boys on public buses

SINGAPORE - A 53-year-old man who molested two boys, aged 15 and 20, on public buses, was sentenced to four years' jail on Friday (Nov 5). Nooraman Mohd Noor pleaded guilty to two counts of outrage of modesty, and another two similar charges involving victims aged 12 and 18 were taken into consideration for sentencing. This is the sixth time he has been sentenced for outrage of modesty offences since 1997. In the last case before this, he was sentenced to two years and three months' jail in May 2019 for molesting a 31-year-old man on the MRT. On Friday, the court heard that on Jan 21, at around 6.30pm, his first victim, a 15-year-old secondary school student, boarded a bus and sat in the last row. Nooraman sat next to him and leaned towards the victim such that their arms were touching. He then groped the victim's groin area and touched him over his pants, positioning his hand in such a way that it was covered by his long-sleeved shirt. The victim stood up immediately and walked away. He later lodged a police report. Nooraman struck again less than a month later. On Feb 8, at around 5.15pm, he groped the groin area of a 20-year-old polytechnic student as they were boarding a bus at...

SDK has already started to provide potential customers with samples of WelQuick.Comparison of WelQuick(TM) bonding method and conventional bonding methodIn recent years, manufacturing industry's requirements for materials such as lightness, heat-resistance and strength have been advanced so much that almost no single material can meet such sophisticated needs. Therefore, there has been a progress in introduction of composite structure into components, in which dissimilar materials such as resins and metals are bound together. This movement is called "multi-materialization." There are many methods to bond dissimilar materials, such as bonding with liquid adhesives or hot-melt adhesives, and mechanical fastening with bolts. Though manufacturers demand simple, easy and timesaving bonding process while securing enough adhesive strength. Emerging-market bulls pin currency hopes on hawks outpacing Fed

DUBAI (BLOOMBERG) Emerging-market currencies hit by a hawkish Federal Reserve could soon regain their record run against the dollar on expectations that developing central banks may outpace their US counterpart in policy tightening. The currencies of Brazil, Russia, the Czech Republic, South Africa and Hungary - countries that delivered multiple rate hikes or are expected to do so soon - are retaining quarterly gains and outperforming peers. More may join their ranks, with tightening expectations growing for countries including Chile and South Africa as economic activity and inflation roar back from a pandemic-driven slump. In comparison, the Fed has signalled it's likely to lift interest rates only in 2023. While recent dollar gains have stalled the momentum in emerging-market currencies, that picture could change once the greenback's support from positioning shifts fades, according to Bank of Singapore and JPMorgan Asset Management. "Emerging-market central banks are set to begin raising interest rates well before the Fed," said Mansoor Mohi-uddin, chief economist at Bank of Singapore. "Over the summer, lower volatility may induce investors to put on seasonal carry trades again t...

Man given probation for trespassing into NUS dorm, taking women’s undergarments

SINGAPORE - A man was given 21 months' probation on Thursday (Feb 18) for trespassing into a dormitory at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and taking items such as women's undergarments. Goh An Soon, 20, has to attend offence-specific treatment programmes and perform 60 hours of community service as part of his probation. He had pleaded guilty earlier to one count each of misappropriating property and trespassing. The court had heard that Goh went to the dormitory at King Edward VII Hall in Kent Ridge Road eight times between Dec 19, 2018, and Feb 1, 2019. At that time, he was a student at another school, which was not named in court documents. He would look for lingerie left unattended in washing machines at the dormitory's laundry areas, or among the clothes hung to dry in the common corridor. "He claimed that he would then take the undergarments to pantry rooms in neighbouring blocks of the campus to look at them up close, and that he left the undergarments behind in these rooms thereafter," Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Pei Wei had said. Besides women's lingerie, he also stole items such as laundry bags containing male and female clothing, as well as a wallet with bank...

GameStop frenzy has spread to Asia

SINGAPORE (REUTERS) - Asia's retail investors, emboldened by the meteoric rise of US videogame retailer GameStop, are taking on short sellers and making their brokers nervous enough to cut off margin lending. In South Korea, small investors known as "ants" have borrowed so much money to dabble in stocks that at least half a dozen brokerages have stopped offering them leverage. GameStop's global impact is the latest manifestation of a day-trading mania driven by amateur investors that is boosting the price of assets ranging from cryptocurrencies to new stock market listings. "Not afraid, not flinching," said Ji-Han Kim, who works at a food delivery chain in Seoul and whose stock portfolio includes Chinese drone-maker Ehang, which he says has made him a 412 per cent return, and chip giant Samsung Electronics. "I see it as a bubble that doesn't burst for a while." However, this euphoria is not universal and Korea Financial Investment Association data shows six South Korean brokerages stopped margin lending this month, after loan values hit a record 21.6 trillion won (S$25.8 billion) this week. "Any more lending to ants would go against the capital requirement ratio for brokerages," sa...

Safety track records of construction firms can be easily compared on new MOM e-service

SINGAPORE - Construction firms' safety track records will be more easily accessible from Thursday (Jan 21), with statistics on information such as fatalities and stop-work orders consolidated for easy comparison. The data on the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) website will also be updated every fortnight. Senior Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad gave the update after observing a work site inspection on Thursday morning. The records, uploaded to a platform called CheckSafe, also include enforcement details such as demerit points, and whether the company is under the Business Under Surveillance (Bus) programme or has workplace safety and health (WSH) records. This allows industry players and the public to compare such records and make selections of contractors based on their WSH records, said MOM. While such information was available previously on MOM's site, users comparing such statistics had to download separate PDF files, each documenting one statistic. They can now see multiple statistics at a glance. Records displayed on CheckSafe date back three years - with the exception of fatalities, which are reflected for a year - in hopes that contravening companies will improve t...

How Covid-19 pushed the property market to adapt

During the worst phase of the pandemic, many people wondered if the property market would come to a screeching halt and result in the greatest fall in prices since the turn of the millennium. However, the market proved to be quite resilient. And this did not come by sheer luck. First, government intervention through stimulus packages and jobs protection aid insulated Singaporeans from the full brunt of the economic slowdown and minimised the number of people affected by retrenchments or business closures. It was reported that around 150,000 jobs will be saved over these two years, with more than half of them by the Jobs Support Scheme. Second, the loan repayment moratorium helped to cushion the shock of job losses and these measures collectively helped prevent the widespread distress sale of homes. Statistics have shown that residential properties make up a large chunk of the Singaporean household balance sheet, with the other components being investments in financial products, insurance and savings. That developers received an extension to project completion times alleviated some of their stress. As a result, the market did not experience mass reduction of prices just to move unit...

Biodiversity survey on Singapore’s Southern Islands finds endangered species

SINGAPORE - A comprehensive biodiversity survey on the Southern Islands has discovered several rare and endangered species there, including the oriental magpie-robin and spotted wood owl. The Southern Islands Biodiversity survey looks at the terrestrial and marine habitats of more than 10 islands south of mainland Singapore. Preliminary findings show that while some of these islands are small and have a history of human activities on them, they are still able to support rich coastal habitats that contain rare and endangered species previously unknown to the area. These habitats range from coastal forests and mangroves to intertidal flats, subtidal reefs and shallow seafloor areas. The National Parks Board (NParks) and the Friends of Marine Park community gave this update on Sunday (Dec 13) at the halfway mark of the two-year study, which covers the islands that make up Sisters' Islands Marine Park, well known islands such as Sentosa and Pulau Semakau, as well as smaller and lesser-known islands such as Pulau Biola and Pulau Jong. The islands in Sisters’ Islands Marine Park and St John’s Island cluster, for instance, range from about 2.7ha to 75.1 ha in size – the equivalent of abou...

Large firms step up to help SMEs as govt aid tapers off

Several large companies are helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) stay afloat as the coronavirus outbreak continues to take a toll on their finances and operations. The initiatives involve providing much-needed relief and training to firms at a time when some government assistance is tapering off as the economy gradually reopens. American software company Salesforce has partnered the Singapore Business Federation to hand out $960,000 in cash grants to eligible SMEs. The programme is expected to benefit 120 firms, which will each receive a grant of $8,000. They can use the funds for their immediate cash-flow needs, such as rent and operating costs, to pay staff wages and to upgrade their skills or to digitalise. Singapore-registered SMEs with at least 30 per cent local shareholding, an annual revenue of $150,000 to $2 million, and which employ between five and 50 employees, are eligible to apply. Applications opened last Monday and close on Dec 23. Firms can go to this website to find out more. Salesforce Singapore vice-president and general manager Cecily Ng said it is the right time for Singapore businesses to tap the grant money to fuel growth, given that the economy ...
