Former LTA officer charged with offence under Official Secrets Act

SINGAPORE - A former Land Transport Authority (LTA) officer appeared in a district court on Tuesday (Dec 7) for allegedly retaining work-related documents on his personal laptop after he left the organisation. Benny Tan Yong Liang, 34, who used to work as an assistant environmental manager at LTA, has been charged with an offence under the Official Secrets Act. He accused of retaining the documents between Nov 20 last year and March 8, even though he had no right to do so. Court documents did not provide details about the work documents or state when he left the LTA. The Singaporean's case has been adjourned to Jan 4 next year. If convicted of the offence, he can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $1,000. Warrant of arrest issued against elderly man accused of assaulting bus driver

SINGAPORE - An elderly man accused of assaulting a bus driver last month had a warrant of arrest issued against him after he failed to turn up in a district court on Wednesday (Dec 1). Ahmad Robinson, 70, who was expected to be handed two more charges for a drug-related crime and an offence under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act, failed to appear before District Judge Terence Tay. A review on matters involving his warrant of arrest will take place in March next year. Ahmad and Aziz Khan Sher Khan, 61, are said to have failed to wear their masks properly when they boarded bus service 2 at around 11am on Nov 2. The police said in an earlier statement that the two Singaporean men became unhappy when bus driver Hew Kim Keong highlighted the matter to them. The pair then allegedly rained blows on Mr Hew, causing him to suffer a nasal bone fracture. Police arrested Ahmad and Khan later that day. S’pore to allow quarantine-free travel to 9 more countries including US, UK

SINGAPORE - Travellers vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to fly to nine more countries and return without quarantine in the coming weeks, in the Republic’s biggest move to reopen its borders so far. Travel to Singapore will also be made easier, with visitors under the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) scheme only needing two Covid-19 swab test in order to enter Singapore, down from the current four. The two are: a pre-departure and on-arrival polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Over 90 hotels in S’pore have served as quarantine or stay-home notice facilities

SINGAPORE - As Covid-19 infections continue to rise, the number of hotels that have served as isolation facilities has jumped from more than 70 in May to more than 90 as at Wednesday (Aug 4). Since March last year, these hotels have - at some point - been used as government quarantine facilities or stay-home notice dedicated facilities (SDFs). They are activated based on current needs, the Ministry of National Development (MND) told The Straits Times. It did not say how many hotels are currently serving as such facilities. SDFs refer to accommodation for incoming travellers who are issued with stay-home notices, while government quarantine facilities are for those who need to be isolated, as they have come into close contact with Covid-19 cases. Depending on the circumstances, people who are under a quarantine order or SHN can also serve it at home, MND noted. 800 more interim rental flats under HDB scheme but qualifying household income capped at $7,000

SINGAPORE - An additional 800 interim rental Housing Board flats will be set aside for families affected by Build-To-Order (BTO) construction delays, but there will be stricter eligibility criteria for those wishing to apply for these units. To apply for a unit under the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme (PPHS) from Wednesday (Aug 4) onwards, the household combined monthly income cannot be more than $7,000, said the HDB on Tuesday. The income reflected at the point of sales application for the BTO flat will be the basis for consideration, said HDB. Households whose incomes have fallen to $7,000 and below since their sales application may contact HDB directly. The household income ceiling is to ensure that the flats, which are highly subsidised, are allocated to those who are less able to afford renting a flat on the open market, said HDB.
