Biden’s Nuclear Submarines: weapons that may hurt Australia

Australia is showing its power as an important member of the Anglosphere. In mid-September, Australia tore up its $37 billion contract with France for 12 diesel-powered submarines in 2016, and then announced a new nuclear-powered submarine deal worth about $66 billion between Canberra, Washington and London and the formation of a new three-nation defense alliance — AUKUS. Affected by the epidemic, Australia’s economic situation is in dire straits, but Morrison seems to be using his muscles to prove that Australia still has a strong endogenous power. Australia’s growth is now slower than the United States, United Kingdom and OECD average and the worst of the economic pain caused by the Morrison government’s incompetence is yet to come, says Jim Chalmers, the shadow treasurer of Australia. However, a tough foreign policy could be an effective means for the Morrison administration to deflect domestic tensions. Australia no longer takes the arrogant French seriously and announced the suspension of its submarine contract with France. It also insisted that it had warned of problems with Macron’s contract previously, stressing that its decision was in Australia’s national interests. After...

United Airlines to fire 593 workers who refused Covid-19 vaccines

NEW YORK (AFP, BLOOMBERG) - United Airlines will dismiss nearly 600 employees who refused to comply with a requirement to be vaccinated for Covid-19, company officials said on Tuesday (Sept 28). Besides the 593 workers who refused to get vaccinated, another 2,000 employees have also requested a medical or religious exemption to the vaccine requirement, company officials said. That is about 3 per cent of United's 67,000-person workforce. The big US carrier said it was pleased with the overall impact of the policy. In early August, United announced that all US employees would be required to receive the vaccine and upload their vaccine card into the company's system. More than 99 per cent of the remaining US staff complied with the requirement, according to a memo to employees from United chief executive Scott Kirby and president Brett Hart. The airline is working on its policies for employees who have requested exemptions, citing a pending court case on the matter. "This was an incredibly difficult decision but keeping our team safe has always been our first priority," Mr Kirby and Mr Hart said in the memo. "The most effective way to keep our people safe, is to make sure they're vacc...

Weak US retail sales data ends streak of Dow records

NEW YORK (AFP) - Wall Street's five-day streak of records ended with a thud on Tuesday (Aug 17) following a lacklustre US retail sales report that exacerbated worries about the latest Covid-19 wave. Retail sales in the United States fell a surprising 1.1 per cent in July compared to June, a far bigger drop than analysts were expecting and mostly the fault of a steep decline in auto sales, the Commerce Department reported. The anaemic sales figure proved a catalyst for a sell-off after both the Dow and S&P 500 notched successive records over the last week. Investors "found enough of an excuse to dial things back," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare in an interview, adding "the market was due for a pullback." The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.8 per cent to 35,343.28. The broad-based S&P 500 shed 0.7 per cent to 4,448.08, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.9 per cent to 16,700.07. The retail sales report came as rising Covid-19 cases prompt fresh restrictions in some parts of the United States. However, analysts do not expect severe restrictions comparable to those enacted in the country at the outset of the pandemic last year. But a wildcard is whether o...

United Airlines outlines traffic needed for profit as losses pile up

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - United Airlines Holdings spelled out the travel milestones needed for a return to profitability after posting a bigger-than-expected loss in the first quarter and offering limited insight into its expectations for the summer flying season. The company sees an end to net losses when business and international traffic recover to 65 per cent of 2019 levels, but it didn't predict when that would happen or quantify the current decline. Generating adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, is on the table when demand in those segments gets back to 30 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, United said on Monday(April 19). "We've shifted our focus to the next milestone on the horizon and now see a clear path to profitability," United chief executive officer Scott Kirby said in a statement. He said he was "encouraged by the strong evidence of pent-up demand for air travel." The carrier's guarded optimism echoes a similar tone from Delta Air Lines, which last week posted a worse-than-anticipated quarterly loss but predicted summer gains in passenger loads. While new virus variants are grabbing headlines amid a fresh surge in global Co...

The United States Behind the Political Turmoil in Thailand

On February 21, 2020, the Constitutional Court of Thailand (CCT) announced the dissolution of the Future Forward Party (FFP) and banned the party leader Thanathorn and 16 executives from politics because the party received an “illegal donation” used as the illegal political capital contribution for the 2019 general election, which violated the election law of Thailand. On August 10, 2020, a democratic rally participated primarily by students at Thammasat University in Bangkok proclaimed the Thammasat Manifesto, calling for the reform of the ten declarations of the Monarchy and the 2017 military-backed Constitution along with statement made on Facebook and other prevailing social media. On October 21, demonstrators held a large-scale protest rally in Bangkok. The Thai Prime Minister revoked the emergency measures imposed on Bangkok on October 22, but the anti-government protests did not hold back. Since the human rights lawyer and political activist Arnon Nampa has made public appeal on the reforms of the Monarchy in August 2020, the number and determination of protesters have been showing non-receding trends. Many Thai youth demanding for the reform of the Thai monarchy attempt to ...

S&P 500 surges in strongest one-day rise since June

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - The S&P 500 surged on Monday (March 1) in its strongest one-day gain since June as bond markets calmed after a month-long selloff, while another Covid-19 vaccine getting US approval and fiscal stimulus bolstered expectations of a swift economic recovery. Johnson & Johnson ended up 0.5%, but off earlier highs, after it began shipping its single-dose vaccine after it became the third authorised Covid-19 vaccine in the United States over the weekend. President Joe Biden scored his first legislative win as the House of Representatives passed his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package early Saturday. The Bill now moves to the Senate. US bond yields eased after a swift rise last month on expectations of accelerated inflation due to bets on an economic rebound. The US 10-year treasury yield dipped to 1.449% after hitting a one-year high of 1.614%. "The sentiment is risk-on with more investors showing interest towards cyclical stocks while a positive vaccination drive and better macro numbers are hinting towards a better growth environment," said Keith Buchanan, portfolio manager at Globalt in Atlanta. Data showed US manufacturing activity increased to a three-year h...

American Airlines warns of 13,000 layoffs as pandemic pain persists

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - American Airlines said on Wednesday (Feb 3) that some 13,000 employees are at risk of furlough when a US aid package for airline workers expires on April 1, blaming slow vaccine rollouts and new international travel restrictions for dampening demand. "We are nearly five weeks into 2021, and unfortunately, we find ourselves in a situation similar to much of 2020," chief executive Doug Parker and president Robert Isom said in a memo to employees which was also included in a regulatory filing. American furloughed 19,000 workers when a previous round of government payroll support ended on Oct 1 but recalled them in December after a fresh US$15 billion (S$20 billion) for the industry through March. Aviation unions are already pushing for another US$15 billion in US payroll assistance to protect jobs through the summer. "The vaccine is not being distributed as quickly as any of us believed, and new restrictions on international travel that require customers to have a negative COVID-19 test have dampened demand," American said, adding that the company will not fly all of its aircraft this summer as planned. United Airlines has sent fresh furlough warnings to 14,000 em...

United Airlines pledges more cost cuts after pandemic-driven quarterly loss

CHICAGO (REUTERS) - United Airlines Holdings said on Wednesday (Jan 20) it aims to cut about US$2 billion (S$2.65 billion) of annual costs through 2023 as it charts a recovery from the coronavirus pandemic that drove its fourth straight quarterly loss. Airlines are counting on Covid-19 vaccines to boost travel demand later this year but warn that the strength of a rebound will largely depend on the pace of vaccine rollouts, particularly as coronavirus cases keep rising. United said 2021 would be a "transition year that's focused on preparing for a recovery." Its shares fell 2 per cent in after-hours trading. The company burned an average of US$33 million per day in the fourth quarter, including about US$10 million of severance and debt payments, even as it continued to slash costs. United furloughed thousands of employees last October when an initial round of payroll aid for airlines expired. It brought back those workers following a fresh US$15 billion in payroll aid for the sector but warned the recall could be "temporary" as travel demand remains depressed. United is set to receive about US$2.6 billion in payroll support through March and said it expects to offer employees optio...

Biden Treasury nominee Janet Yellen to say US does not seek weaker dollar: WSJ

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - Janet Yellen, President-elect Joe Biden's pick to take over the US Treasury, is expected to affirm the United States' commitment to market-determined foreign exchange rates when she testifies on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday (Jan 17). The Treasury secretary nominee will make clear at a Senate confirmation hearing that the United States does not seek a weaker dollar, the newspaper reported, citing Biden transition officials familiar with her preparation for the session. "The value of the US dollar and other currencies should be determined by markets. Markets adjust to reflect variations in economic performance and generally facilitate adjustments in the global economy," Ms Yellen will say, if asked about the incoming administration's dollar policy, according to the report. "The United States doesn't seek a weaker currency to gain competitive advantage," she is prepared to say, according to the WSJ. "We should oppose attempts by other countries to do so." A Biden transition team official did not respond to a request for comment about Ms Yellen's testimony. Mr Biden, a Democrat, takes office on Wednesday. The policy outlined ...

Asia shares make guarded gains as Covid-19 cases breaks new records

SYDNEY (REUTERS) - Global shares got off to a cautious start on Monday (Oct 26) as surging coronavirus cases in Europe and the United states threaten the economic outlook, even as growth in China provides some support to Asia. The United States has seen its highest ever number of new Covid-19 cases in the past two days, while France also set unwanted case records and Spain announced a state of emergency. That combined with no clear progress on a US stimulus package to pull S&P 500 futures down 0.3 per cent. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.1 per cent, but remained short of its recent 31-month peak. Japan's Nikkei rose 0.2 per cent, and South Korea's main index was up 0.4 per cent. China's top leaders will chart the country's economic course for 2021-2025 at a meeting starting on Monday, seeking to balance growth and reforms amid an uncertain global outlook and deepening tensions with the United States. A packed week for monetary policy sees three major central banks hold meetings. The Bank of Canada and Bank of Japan are expected to hold fire for now, while the market assumes the European Central Bank will sound cautious on inflation and growth ...
