Portable generator powers small safety devices
The compact, lightweight device generates electricity when shaken and can power 100 LEDs. TSUKUBA, Japan, Feb 18, 2022 – (ACN Newswire) – A new stick-like, water-based device can convert energy from movement into electricity. The technology, which was reported in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, could be used to power portable devices, such as safety lights. The portable stick generator can be used to power a safety traffic light baton with 100 LEDs. With the growing interest in the internet of things and small electronics, there is high demand for portable energy sources. One way to produce power is to harvest energy from the environment, such as thermal, solar or mechanical energy. To capture mechanical energy – the power an object gets from its position and motion – scientists have developed triboelectric nanogenerators, which can produce electricity through friction. “Triboelectric nanogenerators are one of the most effective tools for harvesting mechanical energy because of their high electrical output, low cost and easy accessibility,” professor Sangmin Lee of Chung-ang University in the Republic of Korea. Triboelectric generators are electrically cha...

Aetos, DBS to convert fleet of 42 vehicles to electric vehicles by 2026
SINGAPORE - Security firm Aetos and DBS will switch to electric vehicles (EVs) for the bank's operations by 2026. For a start, the two firms will use an electric van for cash and valuables escort services. The van will transport cash from DBS and POSB branches to a cash processing centre. Aetos and DBS said that on average, a single vehicle used for such services travels more than 170km daily. Hence, using an EV instead of an internal combustion engine vehicle will reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by up to 47kg a day. The remaining seven vehicles used for such services will be converted into EVs by the end of 2023. By 2026, the other 34 operational vehicles used by DBS will also be converted into electric vehicles. These vehicles are used for operations such as replenishing the cash in automated teller machines (ATMs). Aetos and DBS said the move towards EV was in line with the Government's plan to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles and boost adoption of EVs by 2040. DBS Singapore country head Shee Tse Koon said: "As part of our commitment to sustainable development, we have been encouraging partners within our ecosystem to adopt carbon reduction practices, in ...
Rental companies in US buy up used cars as chip crisis gets worse
NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - The semiconductor shortage has slashed vehicle production so much that rental-car companies can't get the new cars they need, so they have resorted to buying used vehicles at auction. This is uncharted territory for the likes of Hertz Global Holdings and Enterprise Holdings, which have made their profits by purchasing new vehicles cheaply in bulk, renting them out for as much as a year and selling them at auction. In the past, they have bought some used cars to shore up an occasional unforeseen burst in demand, but rarely for the mainstays of their fleets. The demand is sending used-car costs soaring. The Manheim Index, which measures prices at wholesale auctions, shows they're 52 per cent higher than they were a year ago. "We expect to see records in the Manheim Index through June before demand softens enough to align with supply trends," said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist of Cox Automotive, which owns Manheim, the nation's largest used-car auction. "We expect retail prices to continue to rise into the summer, as retail trends tend to follow wholesale trends with a six-week lag." Vehicle production fell 4.6 per cent in the first quarter, and that's compare...
$11b Resilience package to help Singapore bounce back
A total of $11 billion will be set aside for a Covid-19 Resilience Package which will support a three-pronged approach to help Singapore bounce back from Covid-19. It will address immediate needs to safeguard public health and reopen the economy safely, support workers and businesses, and target specific sectors under stress, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said yesterday. "The global economy is projected to recover to pre-Covid-19 levels this year, but the recovery is uneven across countries and sectors," he said. "The Singapore economy is projected to grow between 4 per cent and 6 per cent, with some sectors growing well, and others remaining under stress." The $11 billion will be used to support the recovery process. Of this, $4.8 billion will go towards safeguarding public health, including providing everyone who is eligible with free vaccination against the virus. The national vaccination programme and the medicines for those infected will cost $1 billion. The bulk of the money allocated to public health - $3.1 billion - will be used for testing, clinical management of those who become sick, and contact tracing to identify people who might have become infected, to prevent...
6 weeks’ jail for ex-Miss Universe Singapore contestant who used friends’ card details to shop online
SINGAPORE - A former Miss Universe Singapore contestant who memorised her friends' debit card details and used these to spend $2,000 online was on Thursday (Feb 11) sentenced to six weeks' jail. Ashley Rita Wong Kai Lin, 27, had pleaded guilty in December last year to four counts of accessing materials on a computer without authority. The charges involved about $1,000 in total. During sentencing, the court also considered 27 other similar charges involving the remaining amount. The Singaporean, who was a Miss Universe Singapore contestant in 2017, had committed the offences in 2016 after a break-up with her boyfriend. One of her victims was a friend - Mr Andrew Lim, 28. When she noticed he had left his wallet on a table, she removed a debit card and memorised the details before returning it to the wallet. Between Sept 7 and Sept 24 in 2016, she used the information to make online purchases totalling more than $700 on platforms such as Lazada Singapore. After Mr Lim found out about the unauthorised transactions, he confronted Wong and she admitted to the crime. The court heard that Wong had earlier memorised the debit card details of another friend, 26-year-old Kimberly Qwee. On Jul...
All bicycles used on public paths and roads must soon have brakes
SINGAPORE - All bicycles used on public paths and roads must soon have at least one functioning handbrake after the Government accepted a proposal to mandate such a move. Safety concerns from the use of brakeless bicycles arose following a fatal accident last year. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) said in a statement on Monday (Jan 25) that the proposal mooted by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) was welcomed by the active mobility community, retailers and pedestrians. "We will work closely with the panel to implement it. More details will be announced in due course," the ministry said. The new rule will affect fixed-gear bicycles, also known as fixies, which generally do not have hand-operated brakes but instead rely on the rider's pedal resistance to stop. It will also affect bicycle motocross (BMX) bicycles, which are off-road sport bicycles used for racing and stunt riding. Such brakeless bicycles came under scrutiny last year when a 13-year-old novice cyclist fell to her death after she collided with a metal railing in a multi-storey carpark in Pasir Ris. The girl was riding her friend's fixed-gear bicycle down a ramp and was unable to stop it. Citing the case in its su...
