SINGAPORE - A White Paper with "concrete proposals" to tackle issues concerning women will be presented in Parliament early next year, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Saturday (Sept 18). The Government will study the views it has received on issues brought up during a year-long review of issues concerning women to develop and implement these proposals, he said. PM Lee was speaking at the closing session of Conversations on Singapore Women's Development, where he outlined three broad areas in which Government policies and programmes can help level the playing field for women. In addition, a garden at Dhoby Ghaut Green will be dedicated to the women of Singapore to honour and celebrate their pioneering spirit and contributions, said PM Lee. The proposal was put forward by the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO), and includes the naming of public spaces such as gardens and roads to reflect the central role that Singapore women have played in society and nation. Two new groups set up under PAP women’s wing to study women’s issues

SINGAPORE - The People's Action Party (PAP) women's wing will be setting up two new groups to look into research and policy to help it better address the issues faced by women in Singapore, Manpower Minister Josephine Teo said on Saturday (March 6). The research group, led by Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Yeo Wan Ling, will look into emerging trends - such as remote working - and their impact on women, said Mrs Teo, who is also chairman of the PAP women's wing. "For example, how can remote working help women juggle their roles as caregivers, and yet not become marginalised when it comes to career progression?" said Mrs Teo during an event in Punggol held ahead of International Women's Day on Monday. This group will also sharpen its sensing of women's views, on topical issues such as Primary 1 registration rules and the new sentencing framework Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam spoke about in Parliament on Friday. Mr Shanmugam had said that the maximum penalties for three sexual offences are set to be raised following a review of penalties for hurt and sexual offences. The PAP women's wing had in July last year expressed its serious concerns about the apparent inadequate sentenc...

Man given probation for trespassing into NUS dorm, taking women’s undergarments

SINGAPORE - A man was given 21 months' probation on Thursday (Feb 18) for trespassing into a dormitory at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and taking items such as women's undergarments. Goh An Soon, 20, has to attend offence-specific treatment programmes and perform 60 hours of community service as part of his probation. He had pleaded guilty earlier to one count each of misappropriating property and trespassing. The court had heard that Goh went to the dormitory at King Edward VII Hall in Kent Ridge Road eight times between Dec 19, 2018, and Feb 1, 2019. At that time, he was a student at another school, which was not named in court documents. He would look for lingerie left unattended in washing machines at the dormitory's laundry areas, or among the clothes hung to dry in the common corridor. "He claimed that he would then take the undergarments to pantry rooms in neighbouring blocks of the campus to look at them up close, and that he left the undergarments behind in these rooms thereafter," Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Pei Wei had said. Besides women's lingerie, he also stole items such as laundry bags containing male and female clothing, as well as a wallet with bank...

SINGAPORE - A youth trespassed into a dormitory at the National University of Singapore (NUS) eight times over the course of about six weeks as he wanted to take women's undergarments. Goh An Soon, now 20, who was not an NUS student at the time of the offences, pleaded guilty on Monday (Nov 9) to one count each of misappropriating the lingerie and trespassing. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Pei Wei said that Goh would go to the dormitory at King Edward VII Hall in Kent Ridge Road whenever he felt an urge to look at the undergarments. He did so between Dec 19, 2018, and Feb 1 last year. He would check washing machines at the dormitory's laundry areas, or among the clothes hung to dry in the common corridor for lingerie left unattended. The DPP added: "He claimed that he would then take the undergarments to pantry rooms in neighbouring blocks of the campus to look at them up close, and that he left the undergarments behind in these rooms thereafter." But according to court documents, he took more than just women's underwear. For instance, on Jan 16 last year, he took five laundry bags containing items including a pair of socks, two towels and a pair of men's underwear. The following mo...
