Authorities probing Bukit Batok incident where water gushed down slope onto road

SINGAPORE - The authorities are probing why water from a drain on a slope in Bukit Batok overflowed onto the road on Thursday (July 15). South West District mayor Low Yen Ling said in a Facebook post that the incident happened near Block 383 in Goodview Gardens at around 7pm. She said she informed the authorities, including National Parks Board (NParks), PUB, the police and Chua Chu Kang Town Council. "Very grateful that all of them responded swiftly to our call and were on-site within a short time. Besides the wet and muddy conditions, a tree trunk was found on the road," she added. Traffic had to be diverted from Bukit Batok West Avenue 5 and an NParks contractor removed the tree trunk within one and a half hours. Said Ms Low: "PUB engineers arrived on site and confirmed that the water pipes are intact. NParks is investigating the source of water that was discharged down the slope next to Bukit Batok Town Park (on Thursday evening)." Access to the top of the slope has been cordoned off for public safety. PUB on Tuesday (July 13) warned about a risk of flash floods in several areas of Singapore after heavy rain filled drains and canals to nearly full capacity. The Meteorological S...

Progressive Wage Model to cover local escalator workers from 2022

SINGAPORE - Local escalator maintenance workers will also be covered under the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) from 2022, along with those maintaining lifts. Both groups of workers must also receive an annual bonus of at least one month of basic wages from January 2023, under recommendations submitted by a tripartite committee and accepted by the Government on Friday (July 16). The committee, led by National Trades Union Congress assistant director-general Zainal Sapari, also recommended annual minimum wages for lift and escalator maintenance workers between 2023 and 2028. This will ensure that at the lowest job level, a lift and escalator maintenance worker will earn at least $2,075 a month in basic wages in 2023 - a 12 per cent jump or $225 increase from the minimum wage for 2022. This will affect an estimated 1,300 Singaporean and permanent resident technicians in the industry, of which about 44 per cent are above 50 years old. There are about 3,050 technicians in the industry, with about 1,750 being foreigners. These workers service about 70,000 lifts and 7,000 escalators in Singapore. The PWM for lift maintenance workers was introduced in 2018 on a voluntary basis, and was set to...

Make more creative use of national symbols, set up online platform to report misuse: Citizens workgroup

SINGAPORE - A citizen workgroup first convened in January has recommended that the Government relook how people can more creatively use national symbols like the national anthem and flag - while continuing to prevent their abuse through a one-stop online reporting platform. It is also suggesting that flag-raising ceremonies be conducted in more official languages, and that the National Day Parade (NDP) incorporate hand signing for the national pledge and the anthem to better include the hearing-impaired community. The Citizens' Workgroup for National Symbols, comprising 47 Singaporeans representative of the population, presented its findings to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) this week. The 40-page report comes after a debate over four months that ranged from whether to remove the line "regardless of race, language or religion" in the pledge to the adding of more official national symbols. The report settled on keeping the pledge as it is and finally decided against rallying for more official national symbols to be added, although it said other local icons, like the Jewel Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay, can be more formally recognised for their place in S...

Crypto exchange Binance unauthorised, says Italian regulator, as crackdown widens

LONDON (REUTERS) - Major cryptocurrency exchange Binance is not authorised to carry out activities in Italy, the country's market watchdog Consob said on Thursday (July 15), joining a string of global regulatory moves against the platform. Binance Group companies are not authorised to provide investment services and activities in Italy, even via the exchange's main website which has offered information in Italian on derivatives and tokenised versions of stocks, the watchdog said in a statement. "Savers are invited to make use of their utmost diligence in order to make their investment choices in full awareness, verifying in advance that the websites through which they make the investment can be attributed to authorised subjects," Consob said. A Binance spokesman said its website did not operate out of Italy and that the Consob notice had no direct impact on its services. "We take a collaborative approach in working with regulators and we take our compliance obligations very seriously," he added. With scrutiny of the cryptocurrency sector growing across the world amid worries over consumer protection and the use of digital coins for money laundering and other criminal activities, th...

Intel in talks to buy chip giant GlobalFoundries for about $40.6 billion: WSJ

BENGALURU (REUTERS) - Intel Corp is in talks to buy chip giant GlobalFoundries, a big investor in Singapore manufacturing, for about US$30 billion (S$40.6 billion), the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday (July 15). Any deal talks do not appear to include GlobalFoundries directly, as a spokesman for the company told WSJ it was not in discussions with Intel, according to the report, which cited sources familiar with the matter. The talks come as a semiconductor shortage is hobbling industries around the globe. A deal could help Intel ramp up production of chips at a time demand is at its peak and the company is looking to start producing chips for carmakers that have struggled to keep operations running due to severe shortages. Intel, one of the last companies in the semiconductor industry that both designs and manufactures its own chips, said earlier this year it would expand its advanced chip manufacturing capacity by spending as much as US$20 billion to invest in factories in the United States. Intel said it intended to open its factories to outside chip designers, as it competes with Taiwan’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Korea’s Samsung Electronics. GlobalFoundries, w...

US to see ‘several more months’ of high inflation, Yellen says

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Inflation will remain high in the United States for months to come but eventually retreat, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday (July 15). The comments come after Labour Department data earlier this week showed record-setting increases in the consumer and wholesale prices, again fanning the debate over whether government stimulus and the Federal Reserve's easy money policies are allowing the US economy to run too hot as it bounces back from the Covid-19 pandemic. "I think we will have several more months of rapid inflation, so I'm not saying that this is a one month phenomenon," Dr Yellen said during an interview on CNBC. However, she predicted price increases will reach "normal levels" over the medium term. "It is important that we monitor it carefully, but I believe fundamentally, that this is something that will settle down," she said. The producer price index increased 7.3 per cent, not seasonally adjusted, for the 12 months ended in June, its largest-ever yearly increase since the Labour Department began tracking it more than a decade ago, it announced on Wednesday. The day before, the department reported the consumer price index climbed by an un...

Nasdaq ends lower as investors sell Big Tech

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - The Nasdaq ended lower on Thursday (July 15), pulled down by Apple, Amazon and other Big Tech companies as a fall in weekly jobless claims data fed investor concerns about a recent inflation spike. Nvidia tumbled 4.4 per cent and Amazon fell over 1 per cent, both companies contributing more than any others to the Nasdaq's decline. Facebook lost 0.9 per cent. The S&P 500 technology sector index fell 0.8 per cent and ended a four-day winning streak. Earlier this week, investors' favour for heavyweight growth stocks pushed the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to record highs. The S&P 500 energy sector index fell 1.4 per cent and tracked a drop in crude prices on expectations of more supply after a compromise agreement between leading Opec producers. Data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to a 16-month low, while worker shortages and bottlenecks in the supply chain have frustrated efforts by businesses to ramp up production to meet strong demand for goods and services. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell told lawmakers he anticipated the shortages and high inflation would abate. Yet many investors still worry that mo...

Concord International Hospital allowed to treat patients again after lapses are addressed

SINGAPORE - Concord International Hospital has been allowed to resume treating patients after a ban imposed for major lapses was lifted. The private hospital in Adam Road was ordered to cease all healthcare services from Dec 19 last year, when life-saving and patient use supplies were unavailable or poorly maintained in critical areas of the hospital, such as the intensive care unit and operating theatre, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in a statement on Thursday (July 15). There was a lack of infection and quality control processes on its premises as well, affecting patient safety, the statement added. MOH said the hospital had been allowed to treat patients again from June 16, after reviews and inspections to see if it met licensing requirements under the Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics (PHMC) Act. "This includes having the necessary equipment and facilities at all clinical areas, quality control checks for clinical laboratory facilities, preventive maintenance performed for all equipment and proper infection prevention and control practices in place," said MOH. Healthcare facilities which fail to comply with the PHMC Act could face a fine of up to $20,000 and have their ...
